RF you summed it up in your last quote, “don’t take crazy shot angles and you’ll be fine”. That sums up my 50+ years of bowhunting no matter what broadhead I used.

Facts! I think it’s a dangerous area to get to when you say “this broadhead cuts better so I can take a little bit harder shot angles”

I dont think that's what he meant. Ranch fairy would take a crazy shot angle with the right broadhead. But he meant don't take crazy shot angles with this particular broadhead, but with single bevels and heavy arrows he would all day.

I switched back to a 3 blade one piece muzzy this year after watching this. It took lots of effort to get them sharp but was well worth the effort. For the first time ever I watched a buck fall after I shot him. He never knew what hit him. Pass through heart shot, ran 40 yards and stopped, looked around and fell flat. Thanks for all the info.

There’s a lot of hype on the heavy arrows right now. Pick something durable, middle of the road or slightly heavy- like 125-150 grain, don’t shoot at shoulder blades, and you’ll be fine for deer.

A good setup is a setup that works for you. 500-600 grains some where in there you will find what you bow wants. If you are going fixed single bevel is probably the best however a 3 blade will work too. Keep your shots close is the number one thing. I highly recommend staying 50 yards and under with archery. This distance whatever imperfections you have after all the tuning and forms you’ll have less to go wrong.

I've been shooting 100 grain 3 blade mechanical broadheads for 11 years and have been impressed almost every time. They are right about having to replace the blades on them sometimes after your shot, but the entry and exit holes are well worth it to me! Everyone has their own opinions and what they're comfortable with, but that was a very informative video on fixed broadheads!

Good video guys. Shot angle and placement is on the person behind the bow. My 30+ years of Bow hunting I've tried many broadheads. I use muzzy 3 blades and have shot a few at some steep angles, quartering towards me or away and they always came through. Very seldom do I bend blades. The biggest thing is practice with what you are going to hunt with so when that moment you wait for all season arrives, you can be confident you'll make a lethal, ethical shot. And keep them sharp!

Love the content, as always..in short, I agree with this video. Coincidentally, I've been shooting a 200gr 3 blade because of all the reasons RF and Zach touched on...the 3 blades accuracy, ease of tune, and also that the 3 bl broadhead is not as likely to deflect or veer off course at point of impact, especially on hard bone. I feel that even a sharp single bevel, at a hard enough quatering angle, it always has the potentialto deflect some based on the relationshipof the 2blade at POI... the 3blade also can't plane in the wind, which is an issue I was having in windy western hunting.

@lanewillhite
@lanewillhite Жыл бұрын
@@cjr4497 Not sure how you'd argue that a 3-blade would plane in the wind, or deflect...would also respectfully disagree that a 4 blade would penetrate better or deflect less...it's literally more surface area for wind to catch and tissue to stop. There are plenty of videos showing the amount of force needed to push a 3blade vs 4blade thru a stationary medium like hide or ballistics.

I ❤ the THP Ranch Fairy collabs! I tried the single bevels years ago, I’m good at a lot of things but sharpening a broadhead sent to me sharpened to the equivalent of a butter knife is not one of them, I’m sure it’s all on me, I feel I can be very patient, but for some reason that does not translate into spending hours of my time sharpening broadheads, I admit it, it’s 100% on me, but I love and understand the benefits of a single bevel. Why is there not a company that will send out a single bevel razor sharp broadhead along with offering a fool proof system to sharpen them? Guaranteed there are masses of hunters out there that would anti up the asking price, heck I’d even be happier to send them back each off season to get them resharpened for a premium. I can promise that their are many hunters out there with single bevels that they have sharpened that are to dull to be ethically hunted with!

Interesting video. The only 3 blades I still have are Thunderheads & 3 Hellrazors & they're in a broadhead box.. 90o 4 Fletch is equal lateral too. As for angle shot. A couple of things 1. Know your & your equipment's abilities (be honest). Although, animals can still 'pre-load' (AKA: Jumping the string) &/or spin. 2. Know the animal's anatomy. 3. If your going to make a shot that is past 10-15ish degrees from broadside know the organs & bone structure within the course of the arrow thru the animal. Like the video of the buck in the rain from a tree stand. There is a vertical area between the brisket(center) & the shoulder that is rib heart & lungs at angle the deer presented (Yes, I've made it.). Plus, it was within 30 yards. HOWEVER, there are shots & angles that are definitely "No-go". As they said the 'quartering in shot' (with a bow) is a 'within 30 yard' shot. Just my .02.

I switched back to 3 blade broad heads because I had several deer in a row, that were double lunged, and had poor blood trails, using two blade single bevel heads. I agree that you can increase your effective angles with single bevels but I really believe you increase the blood trail with a 3 blade.

@The_Judge300 Жыл бұрын
If you really double lunged your deer with a quality single bevel broadhead and you often had poor and maybe long blood trails, I am rather sure your broadheads have not been as sharp as they should be. Have you just used them as they came in the box without sharpening them? If you have, I am sure they have been far from as sharp as they should be. Using dull broadheads is asking for poor blood trails. They need to be scary sharp. I have never experienced poor blood trails on any of the deer I have shot with the single bevel broadhead I use. Far from it. Most of the time they are gushing blood. Specially on the exit side. And at the same time have I almost never experienced a blood trail longer than 50 yards with it and never as long as 100 yard. At least 90% of them have dropped within 30-35 yards. Many of them just move a few yards and stand there a few seconds till they drop.

@The_Judge300
@The_Judge300 Жыл бұрын
@@mikefromoh2925 Maybe, but I have lots of experience with killing deer and other animals with a bow in the years I have hunted since I started with my first compound in 1986. And I have tested almost everything that have been made of broadheads since then. There are many broadheads that are better than single beveled ones when it comes to blood trails, as long as they are scary sharp, you hit the right area and you get a complete pass through. And that is the key words for a good blood trail. Shot placement, scary sharp and complete pass through. And a scary sharp single bevel broadhead is what gives you the best chance for a complete pass through. I am not totally sure how many big game animals I have killed with single bevel broadheads, but I would guess it is above 100, and I have never had much problems finding the animals. The single bevel alone is not the reason for this. Good shot placement with a rather silent bow and having it scary sharp, have made almost all blood trails short/very short. Many of these animals have also been shot from the ground while stalking/still hunting. An animal shot from a tree stand will have a low exit wound, making the blood trail even better.

@@ep3389 You’re quite right. I made an absurd and nonsensical comment. Troy said the 3 blade was a step between replaceable broadhead systems and the single bevel broadheads which require some skill and attention to detail in order to sharpen. Three blades are quite simple to sharpen and maintain. Sirius Archery and TUFFHEAD do have Ranch Fairy branded products for sale; and producing any substantial inventory of a new product likely reduces production and inventory of other items already marketed. It could also be that TUFFHEAD intends to market only 150 grain Evolution Series Single Bevel Version 2.0 broadheads and have the archer make up the difference with weighted inserts. Who knows?

I think you very well can shoot quartering to shots with that 3 blade broadhead on deer sized animals if you have enough foc and arrow weight and a decent speed. I have done that multiple times with my 650 grain arrow at 260 fps with slick tricks and found my arrows in the dirt or on the ground and a dead animal close. I would not do it on elk sized animals unless it was close enough for me to be sure to thread the needle to avoid heavy bone. That said, I do now use single bevel 2 blade broadheads only with that setup, as I now use the same broadhead for all kinds of animals, instead of changing broadheads as I did before, and I want to be sure that my arrow will penetrate very well and make a quick kill on all of them. Also when taking quartering to shots.

THP and RF fan. I have learned so much from RF and I have bought in. The frustrating thing for me about this head, and particularly RF name on it, is that the Ashby report says that a 3 blade is the worst for penetration. I see the solid head. I see the sharp blade. I get the arrow flight. It is just odd for me to that the two heads from Tuffhead with the RF branding is either 3 blade or (Evolution) lacking length/width mechanical advantage.

No issues, 0. Zilch. Oh, and I get passthroughs.

Ugh I may be more confused then ever🤪🤣🤣🤣. So the number of bevels, does it depend on the size of the arrow also?? What about what poundage you pull?? Does that matter too?? I have sooo much to learn lol
@whodoyouthinkiam210
@whodoyouthinkiam210 2 жыл бұрын
Bevel refers to the angled side of a cutting edge. A single bevel has one angle side and one flat side(think razorblade), a double bevel has two angled sides(typical knife edge). Bevels are really only important for 2blade BHs and resharpening. Figure out what you want from a BH first before deep diving, ie more penetration, more cutting or retainability...etc

Funny how the park pixie claims, "when you're fishing and not catching anything but your buddy is, to use his worm." Then goes on to say he isn't shooting 400 grain twizzlers. Kinda funny I've never had a problem with my 350 grain, 22% FOC, 318 FPS, arrows with a swhacker. Always passed through, always opened. I don't see anyone trying a light arrow with high FOC. It'll work, it's science. 78 ft lbs kinetic energy.

This is a huge trend/ Fad backed by arrow companies and heavy broadhead companies. I shoot 400 grain arrows with Rage 2 blades and never had an issue and kill 3+ deer a season with my bow. Light arrows and expandables kill deer no issue.

I used Wolverines for Years. I have modified Mini-Blasters to lighten Them. I use Rubber Seals on the Blades, not Rubber Bands. High Speed Setup at 5 grains per pound of Bow Weight. Sort of an Ultimate Archery Challenge Set Up. The Faster the Better. 65 grain Wolverine, Seal, and Low Profile Shaft at 300+ FPS makes things a little easier for Me. Slow Arrows and Mechanicals are a No-No. I've Upgraded to Meet Seekers. They are even deadlier for Deer. I prefer 3 Blades. Stay away from 2 Blade Mechanicals. Lobbing and hoping or Shooting something that gets there quick. Put down the Range Finder and go sharpen Your Skills at a 3D Shoot.

Thanks for this and your content THP & RF! Has been helpful in rethinking my gear and strategies. Question related to this one though: I’ve been noticing a ton of new single-bevel 3 blade broadheads lately (ex: Ozcut Hurricane, Annihilators, I think VPA is about to launch a single bevel 4 blade even, etc.) Besides the VPA, have you guys had experience with these yet? My guess is that they are trying to capture the in-game, bone-splitting rotation that single bevel 2 blades provide, but does that really pan out on game?

Everything else is secondary couldn't be more true👍. If I was going way back in multiple states & mostly hunting from the ground I probably could try to single bevel. But I scout post season & setup areas in March & leave them alone. Too many hitch-hiker style hunters out there that will try to hone in on what u r doing cuz they don't know what they're doing. I know my setup from a 🌳 will allow me to shoot close range from several angles that u just can't take full advantage of from the ground. Archery & bowhunting is supposed to be up-close & personal & it seems that the direction many r going is the opposite 🤔. Thanks for the progression video that @ least makes so many think a little more & hopefully enjoy even much more with what they r trying to accomplish.

Ive went thru many different brands and styles of broad heads thru the years.... And killed deer with close to every kind except single bevel... Never tried those. I'm sure they're great if u have the time. Biggest difference Ive noticed is with mechanicals the penetration can definitely be less and the deer "feel" the hit more with mechanicals and they run like a cheetah after the shot. I personally would highly recommend G5- M3 heads to someone who's looking to try a fixed head.

I know blood trails are unpredictable, but a 3 blade cuts an entrance/exit wound in three directions and ups the chances of getting an improved blood trail. Also, cutting a HOLE verses cutting a SLIT gives you a better chance of hitting arteries, whereas a two blade head may pass parallel to an artery and miss it entirely. The strength of a heavy monolithic 3 blade is unmatched for toughness. All broadhead designs have their pluses and minuses. Fun to experiment.

new to archery, but if you sharpen your arrow the OTHER WAY- back to front, the micro abrasions of the steel will be oriented in a fashion that will be more condusive of cutting, no? just like a knife for pushing vs pulling. or a saw. valid ? or do u want less drag for penetration :o

11:20 this right here should be the end of the argument. A twizzleflap shooter would tell you to absolutely never take the shot in this scenario, it’s unethical and no arrow can do it. But with an adult single bevel arrow, you can not only pull it off but do it consistently. That should tell you something.

So let's take a single bevel on a steep downward angle. Does it's mechanical tendency to avoid pressure cause it to glance off the bone and not penetrate due to path of least resistance? I guess there's always some give and take

But a few years ago the last time I was able to bowhunt I was sitting on the Ground and I had a huge 10 point buck come out in front of me like maybe 30 feet in front of the blind and so I took the shot and when I pulled the trigger it was like as if someone had grabbed the arrow off the crossbow and lifted it up and then dropped the arrow 3 feet in front of the blind and I never touched the deer and plus the string was brand new and it like snap in 3 places and after all that happened I was looked at the crossbow and I had a scope on the crossbow and it was like all the bolts and the screws were loose in the whole Trigger mechanism I could actually take a hold of the scope and lift the whole scope and trigger mechanism and lift it up right out of the crossbow so I don't know what happened or if something broke inside the crossbow or what so I haven't touched it since then
@duanerenchin9322
@duanerenchin9322 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the string somehow went over or under the bolt which resulted in a dry fire. That will send all that energy back into the crossbow which messes things up. Always make sure to use the brand bolt that matches the crossbow. Very common mistake.
