Planishing Aluminum: Austin Healey Shroud
We aren't back on the Healey but we're back on the Healey. In this video Wray has a hand planishing hammer that acts as a power slapper. He tried it out on steel and wasn't entirely sold but he knew it would move Aluminum. So taking Dykem and spraying it on the shroud and then using a hand file to spot the highs and lows. He then takes a dolly and the hand planisher and in 2 minutes you can see how well this tool actually worked. To do any of the fine details Wray will just use a slapper and dolly. He always says the last 10% of the job is 90% of the work.

Nice vid on new equipment Wray. Like they say, every day is a school day and it's awesome that you're humble and willing to show new tricks and techniques! We all have our favorite way of doing things but experimenting with new methods is always cool.

Nice to see ,I was wondering how well it performed on metal and you answered my question.I have seen sales promotions on such tools and adding a convex /concave anvil would certainly be an asset.

Good demo of the tool Wray. I started making one of these myself a few weeks ago, I just need to get around to finishing it up. I will bring my version down when I come for more hours in the fall.

Some anti vibration gel filled gloves would probably be a good idea with that tool.

Yeah I was thinking that too, I'm not sure what's in the black pad on the top, but for sure anti-vib gloves would be a good idea.

Cool certainly easier than moving a panel through a planisher, although there are some designed to be used in a similar fashion, thanks for the video, all the best to you and your loved ones

Cool! We have a couple of air hammers at our HVAC sheet metal/duct work shop that are used for finishing the Pittsburgh joints on square duct. I have considered using one of those for planishing. I like the idea of the air slapper thingy that you demonstrated. I wonder if you turned it up high would it be more effective on steel.

I was hoping to see some sorta review on that tool! I didn’t want to spend so much money on it without seeing somebody use it. I’m kinda in the same boat, though. Definitely not going to buy it tomorrow. I want to be able to metal finish by hand before I try using fancy equipment first.

I would guess the key to using this tool comes from your dolly hand in that it "feels" the alum. and transmits via your nerves the changes in form. I bet you could close your eyes, use the tools, and know the changes your work creates. Ahh, the life of the artist-craftsman...

When this tool is being used “on dolly”throughout, how do you prevent it from stretching the whole panel? I used this tool on a dented section of a low-crown panel, and now the whole panel is raised up (although smoother).

I don't know man, design/engineer, manufacture, market, package and ship. How much is your time worth? Could you copy and build one for less money? ABSOLUTELY and maybe even build a better one if so, do it, BUT, you need to remember his time is money too. I have spent a lifetime working for too little because things came easy to me, so I didn't feel right charging a worthwhile price. It cost me my first marriage and nearly cost me the second one too. I was killing myself for too little and spent all my waking hours trying to provide for my family. Meanwhile my wife felt abandoned by me. If you come up with a new design/idea build it, prove it and charge accordingly based on your product or quality of work. Don't waste your life criticizing others, just stay your lane learn what you can and try to leave this world a little better than you found it. Not trying to criticize you, just saw a place for a lesson from a worn-out old guy.
