Damn! Don't throw them on the ground. I would take them and cut & polish them!! Holy smokes I would already have 500lbs in me pockets looking like the Michelin Man

For me, cutting and polishing destroys the beauty of seeing the opal vein in the ironstone, the history and geology of it. I'll take the chunk of rock over a fingernail-sized opal gem any day. So yeah, me too! I'd be scooping up those rocks lying on the ground!

great looking spot are these fields open to public to fossick around or camp near by

Unfortunately not. Hostile landowners, locked gates etc. Impossible to access unless you have mining permits. There are other fields further south in the Eromanga region that you could access and there is a great dinosaur museum as well. the Kyabra waterhole is a great camping/fishing spot.

The closest to you would be Winton. Pity you just missed the annual Opal festival (6 - 7 July) which is a 2 day event and most opal miners exhibits their wares. Online is the easiest otherwise make a trip to Winton, there are several opal shops and dealers in town, they will steer you in the right direction.

@@BoulderOpal I just Googled "Chip Bottles". So your kids sell them to people who collect them? Been into all kinds of Aussie Opal stuff for 5yrs, it's the first time i've heard of Chip Bottles. They're pretty cool.
@BoulderOpal

@@hellboundrubber4448 They are quite common. Bright pieces either too small to cut or cracked go into chip bottles. My kids just keep them.
