Scammers target unsuspecting grandparents by claiming family members are in dire need of cash. I had the opportunity to "bait" one of them last week and it was shocking!

He said he’s a public defender or something like it, were that actually true (it isn’t obviously) then no one should be unnecessarily wasting their time. Unfortunately we don’t respect people’s rights to an attorney very much in countries that give people that right by not funding public defense programs enough so the very limited pool of public defenders are very much overworked and underfunded. So that is the one kind of lawyer that doesn’t get more money the more you spend time with them.

They pull this same sort of scam in our city except they target elderly Chinese women, and they say their family in China has been arrested for something, and if you don't send money RIGHT NOW, then the whole family will be taken away and will never be seen again (which is a very credible threat for family in China). For me it's ironic because I don't have family in China and I'm not even Chinese (I'm part Japanese, I just know a little bit of Mandarin). But it absolutely terrifies many elderly women, especially widows who have lived in the US legally for years but who still have family in China. I wish more elders knew how easy it is for scammers to surf their Facebook page and garner enough family info to sound credible, like the way this scammer knew the grandson was named Kevin.

This strikes a nerve. Somebody called my grandmother saying I was arrested in the Dominican Republic and that she had to wire $3000 immediately. Apparently my grandmother couldn't tell anyone else in my family because I was driving drunk and I asked specifically for her to bail me out. She went as far as going to the bank and sending the wire transfer, but before someone on the other end accepted it, my grandmother decided to call someone else and was able to cancel the wire transfer before it was taken. What scumbags.

unfortunately, it's actually even worse... I can tell they have a slight bit of an Indian accent, as per usual with these scams Kit goes through, but it's barely there. I don't wanna assume but they're probably in India. The way they typically get the money is through something called a "money mule": these scammers have people in America, or the given country, that rents out a certain location (like an airbnb) for just the amount of time needed to receive the money. They then somehow get the money to the scammers. It's horrendous.

Yeah, good point. It looks like most scams end earlier, either in success or a failure. An experienced scammer, he developed a feeling of whether it is going to succeed or not. Kind of like seducing a prospective partner: with a little experience you could tell pretty early if there are chances. And if there aren't, you just stop early to avoid frustration and wasting time. The case of Kitboga was probably new to the scammer, so he got quite a bit confused! Still I guess he dismissed the case at about the 40th minute. He continued with a faint hope for another 40 minutes, but only because Kit was actively trying to keep him on the line.

A scammer did this exact same thing to my grandmother before she passed. They said that I was in trouble and got her to pay some ridiculous amount. After that she always thought that I somehow had something to do with it and it really put a strain on our relationship - even after my father and my uncles all explained that it was a scam. She was constantly getting scammed in her later days…

That's horrible and really wish you all the best Absolutely disgusting how scammer especially go after the elderly people they know ALREADY got scammed once before, since they think that'll make it easier - sadly it really does... the seed of trust/distrust (sometimes even for their own family as your story proves!) has been planted... These cowardly spineless worms destroy whole families with no regard And their excuses... "Because I'm poor and they're rich it's right!" When I was so poor I counted pennies for a half a slice of bread I NEVER even thought of the idea of getting an old lady to trust me and bully her into sending me all of her hard earned money, NEVER.

Imagine how hecking terrified I was when the scammer said that my dad was in a car accident, and they wanted me to tell my grandparents. Again, I was four, so I was too busy panicking. After five minutes of me crying and asking if my dad was okay, the scammer hung up and I was crying in my room and scared until my dad came home later that evening. This poor man called us sobbing asking if my husband was ok and if he needed to send extra to help with court expenses. He was willing to drive out in a snowstorm to get money & was encouraged to do so by the scammer. Once we explained to him nobody was in jail, he had to hang up as he was so overcome with relief & also felt ashamed he believed someone so easily. Thankfully, the clerk had told me to get off the phone now. At first I was like, "What! Go Screw!!" Then 2 people hanging out in the store both said it was scam like 4 times as I was tapping numbers into the machine and pulling out my debit card. I only stopped when the clerk came out from behind the counter and asked me nicely to please hang up and call SDGE and ask them if they are going to turn off my power. I called SDGE and they said no, there is no scheduled turn off for your account. This is why I love watching these and Kitboga is a total hero. His Selfless-Service is beyond commendable. You showed up on my feed for some reason, so I watched. My 76 year old Dad almost got scammed from the grandson in a car wteck that needs money for car repairs in South America! My husband, Mom & I set him straight. He wanted to go to the bank so badly & send $2000. He thought he was on a senior trip to South America. That happened 12 years ago. My Dad is now 88 & our son is 30. I can only imagine how much money these scammers have gotten in the last 12 years! Also, very thoughtful comments at the end .

The terms of endearment he slips into the conversation are infuriating. Because real professional lawyers love calling prospective clients "sweetie" or "darling".
@Involent

It's actually pretty much the norm in the Northeast. Having grown up in the Midwest, I never got used to being called "sweetie" and the like by complete strangers, even people on the clock, during the years I lived in the Philly area.

@@Involent that's ridiculous, that's the midatlantic. New England is the North East. you can't just pretend it's not because some randos in Philly behave strange. Can I say something, son? And don't take it the wrong way... You don't sound like a very good lawyer. Constructive criticism. See... if you took time to listen to your clients, and answer their questions, maybe you'd get somewhere better than public defender.
