@@GardenofGiants 95 degrees in my pumpkin patch. I pollinated another pumpkin three days ago and it looks like she took! But the plant has made it to the lawn! So now I do what I can to manage the plant in grass!
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Жыл бұрын
Make sure you bury the nodes to get the roots down and they’ll go below where the grass roots are and pull up the nutrients…. Only bad part about grass is it tends to hold humidity and moisture which is the summer goes on could be a bad thing…. But just do the best you can do with what situation you have to work with

@gardenofgiants I see you moved your vine massive amount to make that s curve. I was under the impression this took several days! Did you also cut the nearest two secondary’s next to the pumpkin? Did you have another person help you make that final leap onto board thanks
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, it is typically better to move vines over the course of several days…. It was 91° one I did it and the vines were very easy to move so I just decided to go for it it helps in a really long and not read it down they actually seem to move quite easy…. Vine snapping generally happen when it’s cooler and you have tension on the vines…. tension is caused from the vine being rooted down or stuck in place and then moving it to much one way or the other. I ended up leaving the secondaries next to the pumpkins on all the pumpkin plants. I had my daughter help simply push the pink foam board in place but as you seen in the video I slide the mill fabric on….. i’ll tell you right now placing a pumpkin on its groin platform is definitely a two person job three people would probably be even better.

Thanks Chris for this very informative video. You seem to be the “go to” guy for information as I heard your name mentioned by other growers. Have you entered any weigh off competitions as yet? I would love to see your pumpkins.

That same foam board in Canada is 60 dollars....what gives?? Anyway, I couldn't find the mill fabric for an affordable price. On a Facebook page someone suggested a trampoline mat! Picked up a free trampoline, hoping to use that this year.

Trampoline match should work just fine…. Wow if foam board was that much I would definitely not use it. Mill fabric is definitely tough to find.

Hi Randy, Thanks and I’m glad you enjoyed the video, The foam is actually quite durable but yet light weight, I have been using it six years and I have not had an animal even chew one piece off as far as I have been able to tell. Hope this helps!! Chris Brown

Looking good, i think with the heat you guys in US are around 3 weeks ahead of us in the UK. I fertilised my first two females this morning on primary and secondary vine. Think i need to load up some more soil on them to get more roots in - is this an increase in the risk of rotting the vine though? I notice you have a lot more than I've dared! Do you unload the soil after youre confident it's rooted? Also i have some tertiary vines trying to come out an cross over the secondaries, do you ever prune these? I reckon youve got a monster on your hands there already!
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Жыл бұрын
Be careful how much soil you put on, I put enough on to get roots and then with rain and sprinklers (when I water the soil naturally comes off the vine) if your soil drains very well you can put more on, If your soil is heavy and does not drain well just put enough to create contact with the soil to get the big taproots out. As far as tertiary vines go trim them off unless you need to fill in a part of the patch. Hope this helps any other questions, keep asking!!

Nicely done. When you pollinate a quality pumpkin plant to keep those good genetics do you pollinate with male flowers from the same plant or a completely different plant?
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants 11 ай бұрын
Actually it’s completely up to you and either way can produce amazing results…. Say you have two plants growing both with desire genetics and you’d like to cross those 2 then you can do a cross on them, on the other hand if you have a seed that has very desired traits and you wanna lock those traits and you can self the pumpkin.
@brandonmonroe7050
@brandonmonroe7050 11 ай бұрын
@GardenofGiants thank you for replying I actually grow zuchinni but the same rules apply generally. I was just worried about inbreeding depression from selfing which may not even be a thing with squad plants but even if that does happen the amazing genes should still be in some of those seeds.

is adding a wood pallet under the board beneficial at all, or is that more overkill? i ask because i am getting ready to put my support and sand down
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Жыл бұрын
The only problem with a wood pallet is if the pumpkin gets too big and starts to grow off the side it could become an issue with the pumpkin potentially splitting also with the wood pallet you give an awfully large space for a creature like a mouse to live what you don’t want…. Generally speaking we wait to put our pumpkins onto the pallets at harvest time a day or two before the weighoff.

@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants 2 күн бұрын
It’s OK if the sand gets wet as the water will filter down through the sand he just don’t want standing water

Hi, What is Mill Fabric? Where can buy? Thanks😊
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Жыл бұрын
Mill fabric is a “used” piece of conveyor belt material usually from a Papermill. It is very hard to find and the one gentleman I know that sells it does not have any left for the year…. But stay tuned as soon as he does have some I will let everyone know.

Can eagle 20 cause the new growth to be on yhe greener side. Or is that something to do with my fertilizing combination. I noticed after i applied the eagle 20 that the new growth looked bight green. But i also applied fertilizer the same time

What insecticide or pesticide do you use. I didn’t notice any holes in any of your leaves. Mines chalk full of them. Been tying Neem oil. Doesn’t seem to work.
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants 11 ай бұрын
Yeah the first couple years I tried Neem oil until I realized that it’s a joke of a product and the bugs simply laugh at you….. I wish it worked because I have like a gallon and a half of it still. I now use Imidacloprid Which is the same active ingredient found in Advantix that they use on dogs and cats to keep fleas and ticks off….. it works really good protects your plant from the inside out and you only have to apply once a month.

So I went ahead and got one of those boards and some sand. This is my first year growing an Atlantic giant or any pumpkin for that matter lol. So I appreciate you getting back to me so quick! So far the one I decided to keep is already bigger than a standard pumpkin so we’re getting pretty excited.
