The insect Emerald Ash Borer arrived in the US in the late-90s, when it was first found in Michigan. It has been spreading and causing the widespread death of ash trees wherever it goes. It arrived in Vermont in 2018. It’s not just the trees that are in trouble, it’s the animals that rely on ash trees for food. Some like the Canadian Sphinx Moth, is at risk of extinction because they feed only on ash trees. Treating select trees with a pesticide is one option we are pursuing, but it is expensive. We were fortunate to get a grant for a machine that injects pesticide into trees. This pesticide will keep the ash borer at bay. We are sharing this equipment with other organizations so that more trees can be treated. The treated trees will continue to make seeds that can hopefully save the species in the future -- when a solution is found. We’re doing this work in partnership with the US Forest Service and other nonprofits in Vermont like the Equinox Preservation Trust, which is featured in this video.
