When people are buying archival dust jackets and book boxes their collecting has been taken to a whole other level.

Good, instructional, informative video. Never saw this before. I just Subscribed. As a former Used book buyer/seller at two bookstores I have to say that I saved many, many books (usually paperbacks, but sometimes older imitation leather [aka; Pleather] covered Bibles) ) from the dumpster / trash can by a dose of Elmers white glue, cellophane tape and then put at least 10 rubber bands (criss-crossed) on them for at least a week, with a heavy object on them as a weight, then removed the rubber bands and put on a price tag, and Viola! another good book saved from the trash can. 🙂 I understand that you would not recommend that for "Collector" grade or institutional library books, but we could NOT afford to send them to a Book repairer / book binder.

Great video, thank you. I look forward to any future content. I have protected my dust jacketed WSC books exactly as you suggest. However, I have a number of first edition books (the early Longmans titles, World Crisis, My Early Life, Thoughts & Adventures and Arms and the Covenant to be specific) all of which lack their jackets. I have nevertheless placed clear archival covers over them. A Solander box would be preferable. Alternatively, I’ve considered covering them with a facsimile dust jacket. That would protect the book and look the part. I note that there is a US company that provide facsimile dust jackets for some of Churchill’s works. I appreciate that copied DJs might muddy the waters and expose the uneducated online market to fraud. However, they would look smart - just imagine covering the two volume River War with replicas of those exceedingly rare jackets! 👌🏻 Have you considered offering high grade facsimile dust jackets for Churchill’s books? And/or a range of protective boxes (leather and cloth)?

Hi Andrew, thanks again for your inquiry. To your questions: "I appreciate that copied DJs might muddy the waters and expose the uneducated online market to fraud. However, they would look smart - just imagine covering the two volume River War with replicas of those exceedingly rare jackets! 👌🏻Have you considered offering high grade facsimile dust jackets for Churchill’s books?" You are not the first to ask. We decided against doing so for exactly the reason you surmise. While we trust our customers, when those jackets make their way back on to the market, we cannot rely on the integrity and knowledge of future sellers. And we have regrettably seen sellers offer replica Churchill dust jackets as original. Hence we have a strict prohibition on providing facsimile jackets. However, there’s a good alternative. We suggest getting a role of 3 or 5 mm mylar, which is great material for making clear covers that protect your bindings that lack dust jackets. "And/or a range of protective boxes (leather and cloth)? " Years ago there was a Churchill dealer who had a number of attractive Solander (clamshell) cases made in full leather for various Churchill first editions. The problem was that many of them didn't fit properly. A good binder will tell you that a box of slipcase must be made for the *specific* book it is intended to protect. Even in the same edition, individual books can vary appreciably in size. We have two binders with whom we've developed a good working relationship over the years, both of whom are excellent people and do excellent work. The person we most often employ specifically for boxes and slipcases is in Pennsylvania. If you ever want a referral, just let us know.

Very interesting & informative take on book protection. However, throughout your chat my eyes were glued to the angled book rest you have on your desk. That is just what I've been looking for to put my antique folio books on so as I can read them without opening them flat. So, where might I find such a book rest please?

Hi Jay. I would search on etsy.com with paremeters such as "wood book stand" or "folding book stand".

@@churchillbookcollector9537 Thanks, I have done just that but only 'regular' stands turn up, I want one that accommodates the spine whilst holding the book open. The search goes on....

@@jayroland9481 Hello. Try E-bay. You never know what you might find each week. People buy Storage rental unit contents or maybe a relative (of an E-bay seller) died and the person puts up stuff up for sell on E-bay. Etsy is sellers with regular content, like a retail location. Another option: Contact the Junior or Senior High School near you and see/look for a "Wood Shop" teacher. Ask him if one of his best students could make you a wooden book stand as a class project for a grade and you pay the student a fee.

@@gusloader123 Hi Gus, thanks for your tip. Alas I live in the wilds of West Cornwall (UK) and have limited access to places to have one made. My only option will be to actually make my own (used to work in a woodshop). I scan Ebay on a regular basis but have never yet seen one like the one above, only straight back rests.

@@jayroland9481 Hello in Cornwall! { My Grandma and her family came to the States about 1911 or so. They hailed from Cheshire. The others came from Oxfordshire in the mid 1800's.} Okay - since you have worked in a woodshop before, then you can do this (I made one some years back for a lady friend who had gone back to college and was reading many textbooks at the kitchen table propped up by a pillow. That did not work well. I only had two years of Wood Shop class when I was 13 to 14 years old, so you can do this, If I did. I do not know lumber/ wood sizes/dimensions in the U.K. so hopefully you can kind of guess (approximate) the inches. I used a 1" by 12" {which is actually 1/2 inch by 11 1/2 inches} pine board about 20 inches long. Cut it in half. Sand the edges for smoothness. Then affix some small metal hinges (hasps) slightly offset from each other. Small hinges that might be found on a piece of furniture to each side of the opposing pieces of wood, door hinges will be too large unless you used a much thicker piece of wood. {[ Imagine a large butterfly---> the pieces of wood being each of the "Wings" and the hinges/hasps are the center body of the butterfly.]} Place the opposing "wings" upright, then get a wood dowel or a metal bar/pin and slide that into the hinges so the "Wings" can move to adjust as they rest in a small cradle that sits on the table/desk. You probably (maybe) will need to make one end of the dowel / pin larger so that it does not slip all the way thru the hinges/hasps. The one I made for her was portable so that after study time she could easily move the bookstand/cradle off of the kitchen/Dining table. Make the cradle section somewhat canted so the "Butterfly" can be read easily by the neck/eyes without strain. If you wish to make the "Butterfly" lighter, you could simply drill several holes in the pieces of wood. I hope my directions made sense. This is one of those times when "A Picture is worth a thousand words". 🙂😉

Is it best practice to store books vertically and is it ok to store them laying flat? I have a standing bookshelf but I only leave 4-5 books on one shelf with the heavier and bigger books on the bottom first and lighter ones on top. I always thought that storing a book vertically puts more pressure and weight on the bottom edge binding which rounds out or shows signs of wear through time.

Excellent question! Hope the Channel guy reads your question. I have wondered thought about that for years now. I think it makes good sense to lay them flat on top of each other. Drawback is if you need/want to look at/read a certain book, I might have to take off 1 to 6 books to get to it. I have worked at two bookstores in the past and the books from the vendor/publisher/distributor always were stacked on top of each other, not side-by-side in a box.

What is that book holder thing called in the lower left hand corner? I’m trying to find one that is bent so it can protect the spine, but everywhere I look the book holders lay them flat.

We know of no specific name for such book stands, but they are often used for holy books, such as the Bible and Quran. We recommend etsy.com as a good place to search, where there are multiple options available. Kudos on your care and attention to preserving the spines of your books!

Hi Harry, thanks for your request. There are a huge variety of different dimensions and thicknesses for such sleeves. A great source is comic book stores. Likely you have one locally and they will be a great place to start.

I have a question, I have my books in a bookshelf inside my room; they don't get direct sunlight but, during a certain time of the year, the sunlight bounces on a car parked outside my room and the reflection gets through the window. So, is that reflection equally harmful to my books?
@mp0wa
@mp0wa 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's as harmful as direct sunlight but any avoidance of light hitting the books will preserve the condition of the book longer. That's why I have black-out curtains in the room when the sun peaks through our patio door.

You say dont repair yourself, but 3m does a range of book repair tapes, I have used them on torn covers and they seem to work well, but will they react long term? Also, what is the best type of book cover protection, is that a mylar film type?, I have been using plastic sleave-wallet styles that seem very robust, but maybe they will yellow with age.

Regarding tape, here is what the Library of Congress says: "Do not use self-stick tape, even if it is marketed as "archival."" You will find more information in their FAQs here: www.loc.gov/preservation/about/faqs/books.html Mylar is a good protector. If you are protecting dust jackets I recommend using archival covers, which are mylar (a polester film) backed with archival paper. Brodart is one of several manufacturers of such covers.
