If you are in the area of Nanaimo, British Columbia on Vancouver Island, make sure you take some time to explore the beautiful and peaceful Protection Island. Predominantly a residential area with beautiful ocean-front houses, this island also boasts a fantastic seaside pub and a tide-pooler's dream, Smuggler's Cove.
Join Marti from "Down the Wrabbit Hole" as she and her crew ferry across the water from Nanaimo to Protection Island, then enjoy a tasty seafood lunch at the Dinghy Dock Pub, and work off their meal by discovering purple starfish and other sea creatures lurking in the tide pools of Smuggler's Cove.

The starfish are my favourite. When I was a kid you used to be able to find sunfish (they have way more than 8 legs, they are really neat) but I think the wasting disease that was harming starfish populations must have really hit the sunfish population, cuz we didn't even see one this time around.

Protection Island looks cool! If we ever head to British Columbia, this will be on our list. Love the little pub and the food, too bad you couldn't go fishing. Good hiking spots too! Whoa there's some starfishes there hehe..

Yes, the fishing would have been fun, but not sure what we would have done if we'd caught anything! It's not like we could have taken it back to our hotel room and cooked it, so maybe it was for the best. LOL
