Emma and Snow began as friends during the first curse. Emma and David barely knew each other during the curse. It would naturally be more difficult for Snow to change the interaction (and Emma did not make it easier). Besides, I wouldn't necessarily call being overprotective of a 30ish daughter, more like parenting than being supportive of a daughter's relationship. Personally, as a daughter not much younger, I would rather have Snow's reactions than Davids.

Helene M I’d have to disagree. It was weirdly apparent that as a parent David always had the upper hand compared to Snow. Snow wasn’t a bad mom. But she was just a bit-absent at times. Whereas David was a constant throughout the seasons the minute he found out Emma was his daughter. He snatched up the grandfather role, was always first in line whenever Emma needed someone, and seemed at times to actively reach out to her more than Snow. It can be seen when David wants to jump though the portal to be with his daughter he wasn’t allowed to see and when Emma’s powers went haywire in the Frozen season. Snow was quick to back away her son from Emma (though I’ll admit so was David; that’s just instinct) but was even quicker to go after her and tell her he didn’t care how her powers were. He would be there and support her regardless. TBH Snow was in the background not doing as much. XD But we all have different opinions on the matter. 😂

I think there are many reasons why Emma is closer to her Dad than her Mom. 1. Emma’s first impression of Charming was poor due to David Nolan breaking Mary Margaret Blanchard’s heart in season 1. Also, they weren’t very close. So when Emma came back from the Enchanted Forest in Season 2, she saw a very different man. Charming was a kind, dependable, and DECISIVE leader who lead the town in her absence effectively after the curse, and also took care of Henry while she was away. So it was a positive beginning for Charming to get to know his daughter. Contrast that to Snow, who while had a closer relationship during the curse (being Emma’s best friend). I believe that actually made it harder for Emma to accept Snow as a parent compared to Charming. Emma loved Mary Margaret so when Snow reappeared the differences were harsh and negative to her. Leading Snow to have a bad start with her relationship with Emma going forward. 2. Charming and Emma both have similar personalities and world view. They both are headstrong, stubborn aggressive, and caring individuals who will do anything to protect the people they love. They also are more willing to do nasty tasks to save their love ones. For example, Charming was campaigning for Regina to be given the death sentence to protect the kingdom in the Season 2 flashback while Snow wanted to spare her. Also Charming was willing to execute the mermaid if necessary in Season 3. As for Emma, she was willing to maim the lost boy to get Henry back, that Snow recoiled at. Also it was her idea to steal the watches back in the first place during the Tallahassee episode to protect Neal and her’s future. Also Emma understood why Charming kept his secret during the Neverland arc. She seemed to get that it was to stay focused on the mission to save Henry and not on him. Also many people have commented how similar Charming and Emma are: “It seems you have inherited your father’s tunnel vision..” -Snow White Season 3 “You have your mother’s chin, Ms Swan...and your father’s tact”- Rumplestiltskin Season 2 So while Snow and Emma have gone through some similar trials, they have very different views on life. Snow is more idealistic(too be fair so is Charming) and believes in hope and a happy ending. While Emma during a lot of the series, is more pessimistic and can’t understand why Snow can be that optimistic in their situations. 3. Charming also was forced a role on him, same as Emma. He was forced to be a prince, while her a savior. So they can understand each other from that angle. 4. Snow is more pushy in the beginning about being Emma’s parent (not so much in the end, which sucks), which was hard for Emma to process. She went from her best friend to Mom in minutes. While Charming’s approach was for Emma to come to him, while saying he’ll always be there when she needs him(which seemed to work since by the end of the show, she only goes to him for advice and comfort and not Snow) . I think it’s because the lack of relationship in Season 1, Charming was able to understand that he was a stranger to her. While I think Snow subconsciously thought they would get even closer because of the relationship in the beginning(which was not the case). 5. When Baby Neal was born, Snow kind of got swept in the raising a child from scratch thing, that she kind of stopped paying attention to Emma’s emotions (not on purpose), and Charming was still able to spend time with Emma, so they got more closer than ever. 6. It also does help that Charming is good friends with Hook (Emma’s husband) and Snow barely seems to talk to him. 7. It seemed by the end of the show, Snow stopped trying which is unfortunate, but it’s the reality. Literally in one episode in season 6, instead of comforting her daughter after Hook leaves, her and Regina plan a girl’s night to get Emma drunk and forget her problems. The only person in the situation that tries to help Emma in a healthy way is Charming. It felt like by the end, Regina and Snow were closer than Emma and Snow, which is super sad because I loved Snow and Emma’s relationship in the beginning. So while I do believe Snow and Emma love each other, they do not understand each other and were very estranged by the end. Charming and Emma were very close by the end and were one of the best parent-child relationships on the show.
