Learn how to set up your mix bus in Pro Tools and use it to print & export your final mixes instead of using 'Bounce to Disk.' Printing to a track will save you time when making small mix changes, as well as give you full flexibility while bouncing your mix.

Very informative video. I'm watching, and learning, from the engineers at the studio I work in. A lot of times they're in the middle of a session, and they're moving like greased lightening. Obviously I would not dare interrupt to ask questions, but I take mental notes, as well as jotting things down. Just last week, the lead engineer told the artist he was going to "print that." He moved so fast, I missed what he did. But now I got it.

Hey Jordan, hope you and your family are staying safe and well. Here it is 8 years later and I’m just now stumbled upon this tutorial and I’m so elated I did. Your video is the most detailed and clear on printing and bouncing. I must add it’s the easiest way I’ve seen. I say that to say this keep up the good job .I’m not sure if your channel still exists but if so I’ll subscribe. Thanks much

Since the output on the Master Fader was set to mixbus, wouldn't that send the signal from the tracks through the mix bus fader without having to change ALL the track outputs to mixbus?

I am a beginner and I was taught to create a mix bus and add stereo widening. So I already have a mix bus AUX set up in most of my songs with stereo widening. However I was using the bounce to disk and becoming frustrated because I would listen to songs on my iPhone and they sound completely different. I mean panning not always correct, EQ completely different, and worst of all sounding brilliant on pro tools and the levels are completely different after bouncing. Hence the reason I am here. I have been tearing my hair out for a long time over this issue . And tie myself in knots having to go back and start again countless times. I struggle to follow teaching videos because they are aimed at people who are already pretty knowledgeable. I understand what you are saying, but it's still a bit complicated for me. I am really struggling.

I get what he did, but I'd just rather make sure everything is properly mixed the way it should be, and then just bounce it... Seems like if everything is how you want it in the mix, bouncing would just be easier... IJS THOUGH... Sometimes all that other stuff is just more technicalities for nothing...

This is the method that we get taught by our lecturer in our Sound Production course. I thought the same as you until he explained that this approach is useful to create a playlist on the printed track. A playlist is useful if you want to capture different versions of the final mix to play to the artist. You re-name the different takes accordingly. That's in addition to all of the advantages that Jordan mentions in the video. This video explains some of the advantages in even more detail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms-dh9h9ltzbpo0.html

if I print to another computer running another daw and since it shall be a D to A and then A to D conversion, could I get some analogish warmth.. ? kind of off topic.. just curious..

This is incomplete because this only applies to print tracks for sharing not for finalizing and distribution. You didn't mention anything about the dithering levels. PT will actually downgrade the quality of the audio as you show.

Great video. But I just don't understand why you created the Aux Track. Is it really necessary?
@inanehalaman1842
@inanehalaman1842 3 жыл бұрын
yes because an audio track cannot receive buses as input. So you need the aux for buses input but then need to use an audio track to record what you receive in the aux because you cant record an aux :)

Nice video...just got one (my biggest) problem: I use Pro Tools and my mix sounds exactly the way that I want. After bouncing to a stereo track and play it on windows media player it sounds different, kind of lifeless or dull. The reverb and the clarity isn't that present and crisp as in the PT Session...and all I did was just bouncing with the same sample rate. PLEASE GIVE ME THE ADVICE THAT I NEED

Why I can have a diferent sound in print vs. bounce? In my case in bounce the bass and kick sounds kind of louder and they don't have any diferent plugins than others or something like that. ANY IDEAS?

Also, wouldn't you need to add crossfade to the punched section of the printed track? Surely it'd click or pop without doing so.

DJ_URBAN_BG printing is an internal digital recording. If you export that print, there should not be any Daw processing. You have to choose the sample rate basically. There is no stupid question in this... we are all leaning ;)

You might need to create the bus's in the i/o man, check in there to see what outputs you have set up Sounds like you only have the master bus and some fx busses routed in at the moment

@JimmyWestra

Pro Tools (bounce to disk) gives me the track bounces to mp3 .wav that plays silent on any media. So I get a 18 Mb track of silence mp3, or 108 mb .wav that is silent in itunes - media player- real time, vlc, usb thumb drvs, on different computers and iphone =The file takes up Kb to mb in space according to info of the file index of the mp3 or wav file bounced by PTools. MEDIA PLAYS NO AUDIO FROM PT BOUNCE TO DISK FILES .wav or mp3. The files are not bounced as .ptx files either but nothing reads Pt bounced mp3 .wav. files. Will exporting the PRINTED FILE read in other media? unlike PT's bounced 50/100 mb .wav mp3 silent bounce glitches.

Hi Jordan, great tutorial. Just one thing though. For some reason though, when I select all the tracks to go to mixes, even with all the tracks highlighted I can't get them all to go to mixbus like you do in one action. I have to individually change them all. Am I doing something wrong? Can you tell me what keys strokes you are using. Cheers mate.
