Thank you! I'm 66 and looking for a new helmet. PPE is priceless and worth every penny! In 2002 while working in Payson, AZ I was up about 40 ft in a Beatle kill topping to avoid a power line. Last tree of the day, you know the deal. Dumb ass me, made my cuts and said to myself, "mant his is just going too easy! " Yep, wedged the saw. I dropped a line and my buddy sent the other saw up. Well, was getting it done and , OH Shit, the top barber chaired on me, I attempted to haul ass down and move to the side but nope. I was hit in the head and shoulder by the tip. Was pushed up against the tree. Didn't go unconscious, but you know the words that came out of my mouth. I was able to climb down. Damage, a bit of a compression in my neck, three broken ribs and embarassment lesson that lives with me to this today. So, PPE, I never will never make a single cut without full PPE PERIOD, (not a glove wearing person thought and it's wrong of me). I've been running saws from the age of ten. I'm on my third set of chaps since March 2002 when I started wearing full PPE. When I watch some of these youngsters not wearing full PPE I will comment 100% of the time. IMO, when you buy a saw the sales person should automatically take you right to the PPE section and no you won't find the high-end gear. In fact maybe this should be the first place you go before your purchase. Thanks for the great program, Merry Christmas from TX

You're absolutely 100% correct sharing things that don't go right. A very good friend of mine now deceased, Stan Whitney. Stan was as safety conscious as they come and had a saying which I'll share and believe me it's priceless. "Accidents are caused they don't just happen!" Plane and simple when you do what we call an after action report AAR, you'll likely identify where you went wrong. Thanks again, Merry Christmas and sorry for the multi post.

Thank you for sharing the details of your incident and tying it into the bigger picture of saw work and bringing it home with Jed. I have used a Protos helmet for several years and some friends cannot fathom how much I spent for a helmet for the casual cutting I do. They do not have a good answer to "how much is your head, and life, worth?"

It’s an eye opener reminder for sure Tim. I have the same Pfanner Protos You’re right. That screen has saved my eyes or face several times. I had a 1/2” maple stem whip back and hit my helmet last year. I’d been in bad shape without the Protos. They are the best out there. I honestly don’t leave home without it. It goes in my truck where ever I go. Keep the faith. RIP Jed.

I just received mine and for those that take safety to the ultimate, this is the helmet to purchase. Mine needed very little adjustment. This is NOT a $120 or $200 dollar piece of gear, it's like $350 but worth it and I've taken one blow to the head while climbing and I can't give a count on how many time slash and limbs have hit my face screen. Great visibility, great comfort, great product.

Thank you for the reminder that ACCIDENTS HAPPEN! We sometimes get lax in our attention to the SMALL THINGS. Especially when it comes to repetitive work. It is THOSE jobs that are more prone to get you! I am guilty of leaving my helmet in my vehicle at times because "it is inconvenient" to put in on for a quick cut. I try to be more careful now, because at 66 years young I don't move as fast as I use to, therefore I try to assess the situation at length before putting the saw to work. I have worked utilities for over forty years, and I have had friends and associates killed on the job. The bottom line is that we all want to go home at the end of the day!

Damn son! As far as you were, I would have never thought a limb could have gotten you off the tree you were cutting---off another tree is easier to believe. You were looking at a concussion, best case, but worst case, it had a LOT of kinetic energy and it might have been curtains. As an eyeglasses wearer, I agree with you about the screen vs. solid shield. Sweat is a real issue when it comes to vision.

Condolences to the relatives and friends of those recently lost in tree-cutting accidents. Shame the grapple-saw crane trucks and Sennebogen-type machines cost so much. Would getting the drone out to look from the top of the tree, assist at all? (Obviously trees are minute to minute in high winds) (or add a FLIR camera, if the cost can be justified for tree canopy inspections and other uses)
