Mercer (The Real one) died at the train station. The Blacklight Virus is all we truly know, and it has been through Prototype 1 and 2. It was never a hero, nor a villain. It was an Anti-Hero with a set of goals that to some are heroic and to others were despicable. But to understand his shift from Prototype 1 and 2, you have to read the comics. But iin all seriousness, had he not messed with Heller, then he wouldn't have lost. You just don't mess with a grieving father who has lost hope.
