But good luck with that now that we have this ludicrous, self-righteous, hypocrites that want to rewrite everybody's history into some bullsh*t narrative that is PC. Kind of like the white missionaries tried to do when they forced the natives into schools and outlawed their language and culture. That didn't work out so well and didn't breed any kind of resentment at all did it? And now these self-righteous a'holes want to do it again only this time to everyone. Gamzee Makara Using people as a mascot is racist? What about the Michigan State Spartans? Or the USC Trojans? Those were real people so unless you're as offended by those team mascots as you are by this one, I'm calling blatant hypocrisy on that one. Using people or even a people as a mascot is not a sign of disrespect but the opposite, as long as it is done without racial insensitivity, which is why the name "Redskins" is offensive... Calling the mere logo offensive simply because its a depiction of a Native American is tantamount to saying the Sacagawea on the US Dollar coin was racist.

The difference is that the term "Redskin" can, and has, been used in a derogatory manner (there is some differing opinions on that) while the mascot for the Cleveland MLB team is simply the name "Indian." I'm sure a case could be made to change that name as well. I think that gets a little too PC for me, though.
@amberck982
@amberck982 10 жыл бұрын
Todd Exum It's not the name I have offense with Cleveland's team. It's the actual stylization of their mascot. Similar to a Black Sambo motif that we wouldn't dare to use anymore because of how insulting it is. It's high time we check our privilege and treat all people with respect and dignity and not make race a punchline.
@908jam
@908jam 10 жыл бұрын
they should change the cleveland indians mascot. if you watched the video, you will notice that one of the first things to come up that they "call themselves" is indian. so that would be WAY too far. the redskins organization is also trying to argue that the word is not a slur. some people may use it as such, but red skin is not a slur, just as white, black, or brown skin is not. combined with the history of the organization, i would be inclined to keep the name as is. but if they really feel that strongly about the name not being about their skin, then how about the washington indians? according to the ad, that would be agreeable.

@Martin Balber Hold on there, you literally just quoted them, then you now state "Native Americans" placing all 500+ tribes into a basket. You'll need to remain fair and state that "those five tribes that settlers called civilized" owned slaves. By saying "Native Americans" there, you're laying claim that ALL people of turtle island (known as Indians of the America's, Native Americans, red man, etc) all held and owned slaves.
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism 4 жыл бұрын
@Martin Balber What you are attempting to prove is that all people are imperfect and did some not so honorable things in the past. The difference is, those 5 tribes that held slaves don't have sports named of teams for the black community mocking them with foolish caricatures and black - skins - the N -words or the dark - ies etc.etc. They have long since apologized to the black communities and stand with them today with the issues they face. That's the difference. The same ask by we Indian people is of you. To please drop this foolishness, and stand along side us with our issues, such as all the broken treaties, land theft and the mass killing of our women, the lack of opportunities that have forced living conditions of that of the 3rd world and the list goes on and on and on. We are people. Not mascots. Those 5 tribes don't dress up and put on black face to mock the honorable black community do they? We've all done imperfect things. The difference is, what we can do about it moving forward. Stop the hate. The R-word and the use of our image (mainly that of the plains tribes) for profit and mockery is wrong and studies show it's harmful to our children.

This is one of the most profound powerful presentations of our viewpoint. What is hurtful me is how much venom can come from people who have no vested interested in this issue and only have a need to be mean. What is beautiful is how people from all walks of life and nations can respect our desire to be seen as a people. We will and can change the mascots, one at a time, and it will happen.

Seana McDuffie I view this video and this mascot issue as a way for the Native American community to bring their more serious issues to the forefront. The whole video was showcasing their lives and only at the end was the mascot mentioned. The mascot, in a way, is representing not only a football team, but the very modern plight of the Native People. They have been struggling and fighting for a better life since they were removed from their homes, and they continue to do so to this day. And only until they started fighting against a team mascot, was the conversation created on a larger scale.
@martyc909
@martyc909 10 жыл бұрын
Seana McDuffie Really, because if I remember correctly the name was actually created by George Preston Marshall to recognize his coach,William Henry Dietz, Native American heritage. The problem was Dietz was not Native American, and only claimed to be so that he could avoid going to World War I. But the Redskins were once named the Braves, which also was a Native American name. Also, in terms of Native population opinions. Most polls done on reservations have found that a majority of Native Americans find the name offensive. I myself have Native blood, over 50% according to a test done on our family. BUT, we did not live in a reservation, even though I spent a lot of time there during my childhood. But many Native Americans who live on a reservation have opinions of those who claim to have "Native blood" and have never lived there. So it's very hard to say I have Native blood, because when I talk to people online and they talk about how their grandma is Cherokee, you click on their Facebook page and they are blond haired and blue eyed. We should be polling those on a reservation, and those polls generally say that most that live on reservations find the name offensive. Now if you also ask them how much they care, it's also low because they have more pressing issues. But this is still something that can be changed and should be changed.

What I was trying to say was, that the mascot is not the actual issue. It is just the platform they are using to bring the REAL issues and problems that Native Peoples continue to face to the forefront. They have always been fighting to bring awareness and change for themselves and it never got any genuine air time on national media sources.....until now. Until they started fighting against this NFL team. It seems to be a tactic that is doing a good job at bringing the Native Americans problems to the main stream. People across the board are talking about it. Regardless if they watch football or not. The mascot is not the actual issue for them, it is just, like I said, the platform to get peoples attention. Now they have it, they are starting to talk about the poverty and other problems that are plaguing the Native Americans. This whole commerical was about the people. About the lives of these beautiful people. Not about the mascot. They threw it in there at the end because...well that is the what is bringing about the attention.
@martyc909

Seana McDuffie I have actually argued that the imagery the Redskins use is actually not bad. It's the name. Now Cleveland Indians, that's just wrong on all levels. But if the Redskins were still the Braves, I wouldn't complain at all, because naming a team Braves would be like calling a team Knighs. But the name itself has to go.

Frances Rumbletart This 'phony issue' is a result of a very real issue, the one you're so passionately reminding us of. There's literally no logical reason not to raise awareness about the many facets of the issue, the many faces of racism. This kind of 'subtle' injustice is what embeds itself into the minds of our people and our youth and makes it easier for them to accept the injustices on their reservations and in their homes. This is merely a piece to a larger puzzle. There will always be non-ethnic people who simply watch this and feel good for watching it. Share it and feel like they've done their job. But for every ten who stop there, a few will remember in the voting booths, in the streets when they see the injustice thrust in their faces. We shouldn't ignore or avoid messages as seemingly small as these because they don't fix a problem so much bigger than most of us feel capable of conquering. It's a part of the battle, you have to learn how to work the system. If the best you can hope for out of some people is to share this a dozen times so someone who actually has a soul does something more, then you go for it. You sadly cannot force everyone to change. It is worth it to hope for any influence, however small. The more things like this are brought up, the more people will be receptive to larger, more important messages.

Here are my two cents: Pretty interesting commercial. I don't think the mascot itself is offensive, but the name CERTAINLY is. I don't understand how people can't clearly see when something is offensive, and why white people are so against changing things that are offensive. It's like the chief dance at U of I (one of my alma maters)... A white guy with Indian paint doing high leg kicks is not being respectful to Indians. I don't care how serious the individual is taking it. I think, and agree, we are getting WAY too politically correct these days, but some things are undoubtedly too much. And "redskins" is a little much... It's like calling a team the "negroes," "slanteyes," or even "whities." There would be outrage in every one of those circumstances. So how is it any different in this case? I don't care what the motivation is from any side, the fact is, it's wrong.

Cody Bowman I sincerely hope you're joking... A cowboy does not reference a race at all. It's an occupation. That was a terrible comparison.

Very powerful. I remember having this conversation in my 12th grade sociology class, the need to change has been way overdue.

I used to sit in sweats with First Peoples on the Res. They referred to themselves as the Red Man (in the global sense) and talked about walking the Red Road, honoring their traditions.

I would love to see this played during the Super Bowl commercials. These harmful stereotypes and slurs make Native culture a commodity and erase true Natives and the struggles that my family went through.

I'd like to see it played during the Superbowl. I mean, Seahawks & Broncos don't need to do Redface.

That's a great idea. It may be cost-prohibitive though and the NFL may not agree to it.

I know I'm white and I want this to play so bad. It would be great. Maybe we could all just share it though. The internet is powerful.
