Where I live in the UK local shops now all stock the same junk, you go into one and it's just the same stuff as all the others. I think they all get their stock from the same cash and carry wholesalers. Russian shops look much more interesting and more varied.

A nostalgic trip for me.....I lived in Ivanovo, not far from Vladimir. Used to hitch hike to Vladimir to catch the train to Moscow!! That was back in 1979..... beautiful then, even more so now!! Thanks Sam

Прочитав отзывы, многие заблуждаются. Цены в деревенских магазинах, не значительно выше чем в городе. Это объясняется транспортными расходами. У нас много животноводческих ферм, куда можно подъехать и купить свежее мясо. В сельских магазинах, народа конечно меньше и торговать не свежим мясом не будут. Так как магазины не большие, то и на складах места для хранения нет, а это означает, что просроченных товаров нет.

This is a great video Sam because it shows real Russia These shops are indeed full of essential products which are very well stocked so that the locals can buy food or other useful stuffs without leaving their village! Excellent job, Sam. As usual. A few observations, if you don't mind: 1. We watch your channel because of you and your genuine approach to everyday life in Vladimir. Your videos don't have to be slick or perfect. That's part of the charm. 2. The Russian culture is an ancient culture. It has survived whatever has come its way. Folk cultures find a way to survive. Pop culture is always changing and is far more vulnerable to the strong winds of geopolitical, natural, and economic forces. 3. This was a very interesting video. Small and inconspicuous shops full of products that locals enjoy. 4. Maybe you could focus a few videos on local cuisine -- pelmeni or dried fish -- and go and find different places that serve it and/or even a Babushka that can explain to foreigners how to make it? 5. Get those t-shirts made -- Sam's Russian Adventures with the seal of Vladimir on it. Maybe one with "Babushka Life" on it. All with how to find you on different platforms on them. 6. There seem to be lots of churches around. Exploring them is always nice. Lots of history to explore in these buildings. 7. When the snow melts and warms up, maybe a few videos on local nature, if it makes logistical sense. 8. Never give up. Ever. You never know what these struggles are preparing you for down the road. You might become a documentarian. Remember, most of the world is filled with average, everyday people who enjoy seeing how other average, everyday people live. No matter the culture or the country. We're inundated with how the rich live and it's a fake, cold life being sold as a great life. There's nothing great about it. In the end, we all individually leave here the same -- in a cold wooden, plastic, aluminum, or steel box. Then we face God for judgment. How many likes on social media or how much money we had will mean nothing. Mir. Blagosloveniya.

I watched your other video on why some episodes deserve more views than they actually have. I subscribed on different bloggers doing videos in English as I don't understand Russian and I noticed that I don't get your videos popping on my queue often so it must be the algorithm. While I get regular pops from the others. It's upto the yt gods who control the traffic. What I can do is try to comment as mush as possible on your videos to stir the conversation. Maybe if you have just a few followers who are dedicated in putting a comment then it may trick the algo.

Hi, Sam! Thanks for a great video. I like when you smile. Some shops are closed because many villagers nowadays have their own car and can go to Vladimir for shopping. In small villages there are only convenience stores left. They are used mainly by elderly people when they need to buy small things and there is no sense to go to Vladimir for them. I know this because I myself live in Vladimir, and my brother had such a shop in a village in Vyazniki region

Your home town looks beautiful. It reminds me of the little farming towns surrounding Cape Town a little more inland like Ceres Valley and Paarl and Stellenbosch here in South Africa. Dramatic landscapes featuring mountains and valleys and tall forest trees growing thick in the cloudy distance, though I'm sure it gets far colder there than I can imagine. You are very lucky I think. Those quaint little shops run by apparently good-natured and amicable people. It all seems quite pacific, wholesome and down-to-earth. I also think it inspiring the way your neighbors regard the absence of international brands that quite frankly I couldn't care less for either. "We can't get that, so we sell the Russian alternative and it's just fine. The same, even. But shame, the pensioners seem to struggle a little more." I do like your channel. I find it very novel and I think what you have to show the right kind of audience is very interesting and refreshing. More power to you, sir! 🙂

Reminds me of the kiosks at rural railway stations in Belarus, I always used to stop and get the sliced sausage, beer snacks and a few beers, glad to see that the local shops are well stocked with Russian produce, you don't need the overpriced western tat anyway, your better off being independent.

Looks like my local shop in U.k I live in tiny village and prices in Village shop are always 3 times more than the nearest towns Supermarket,so i avoid unless its a Emergency.

Interesting Sam, I liked the way most of them were happy to let you film inside their little shops and mini supermarkets and to discuss their businesses. I wonder how it would go down in the UK. I saw one video where a guy went into a shopping arcade and even filmed the security cameras themselves. That quickly led to the police turning up. It was as if they couldn't tolerate this challenge to the accepted order of things: they can film us, but we're not allowed to film them 😂

Thanks Sam!!! This was a nice trip with you. I love it when you stop on the way because you find something interesting.We had some small shops like this in Sweden. But that is a long time ago. The big chains took over and gas-stations started selling groceries because back then they were open later than grocery-chains. But thing have changed a lot since then, they want us to shop 24/7 everywhere nowdays.

You could show us a post-office inside, it also works as a shop in small villages, where they do not have actual shop.

They call it one of the most livable cities in the world. Don't believe it. I know. What a perfect place you are in right now, to settle down even if you are 66 like me. I do hope technology doesn't change the beauty of that place. My local convenience store is no way as good as those you have shown. NO WAY NEAR.

That looks like an Indian owned shop down the road from me, just a bit. It has a touch of everything you might need if you can't get into a larger town. I live in Florida. That shop also reminds me of a 'general store' I used to visit in N. Florida.

Hi Sam, great video. You were at the top of my recommendations! I am not an expert on videos, but another idea is maybe there are small automotive/motorcycle shops you can check out. I would have loved it if you were regularly coming into my shop to see what I was working on. Not talking about a big busy shop like where you bring your vehicle. If you bring alcohol, how could they not like you. Just an idea. I like watching your videos so don't stop. Pet Ksusha for me 😺

The shops in Russia seem clean and well stocked . Many village shops in UK closed owing to increase in car ownership, the home freezer and bulk buying power of large supermarkets meaning prices uncompetitve. Shoppers would drive to a large supermarket once in a while for most of their needs and then use the local shop for a few top up items. I remember lots of use it or lose it campaigns. Many lost it.

People can relate to shopping differences, this is interesting and engaging to audience. Cover prices, its easy to convert due to exchange rate of approx 100 to 1. I would also enjoy seeing how some of native foods are actuslly cooked and served.

Local shops often carry more local products, because farmers and other producers can get a foot in the door. If they know you, you can even buy stuff on credit; try that in a large chain store!

Nice video and it's good to see how things are so different than the way Russia is often portrayed. I would think however that one should buy a samll item in exchange for the permission to film. It would cast foreigners in a better light in the eyes of locals.

Great video! I love seeing the small out of the way shops. I am in the US mid west. When I was a kid we had several small shops what we called mom and pop grocery stores. Each one was unique in it's own way. Now they are all gone. It's all big box stores now. I have been following Russell for awhile now. He does good work too. I just saw his Russian swimming club one. I don't see how Russians get into the water when it's like zero degrees outside. Interesting though.
