I highly recommend Ventoy for usb flash devices. You can just throw the .iso's onto the drive and it will display a menu option for each one. Minimal fuss.

As you're configured direct hardware passthrough, you could (should) have mentioned, that you have to enable iommu (which isn't, as clearly stated by proxmox itself, e.g. tc 0:30:37)

I used a CWWK appliance with 4 2.5G ports, 32GB RAM, & N305 CPU. Passed thru the WAN & LAN to OPNsense VM. Used a 3rd port for Proxmox maintenance, the 4th port is for Home Assistant OS and an LXC that does nothing but run 30+ Docker containers. It's all backed up every 24 hours via a Proxmox Backup Server VM running on an Deskmini X300 UNRAID box to my Lockerstor 4 NAS and then the files are synced-up over a Hetzner Storage Box located in [REDACTED] on the other side of the planet and encrypted because I'm paranoid about data-at-rest.

What is the storage bandwidth of TrueNAS running in a VM vs TrueNAS running on bare metal?
@ajama1335
@ajama1335 5 ай бұрын
From an availability perspective, I feel more comfortable running PFSENSE on bare metal rather than virtualising. Can't have a single point of failure, even in my home environment. Good video never the less.
@blender_wiki

If you go about it correctly (unlike how it's done in this video), virtualizing pfSense/Open Sense is genuinely not a problem. For added resilience and to minimize points of failure, it is advisable to establish a secondary pfSense installation as a failover.

4:00 -> Not strictly true. The machine has a digital windows license built into the bios. I have the SER5 Pro and upon hooking it up, I downloaded a fresh windows ISO, rufus'ed it to a USB drive and did a fresh install of the OS. I would recommend downloading the drivers from BeeLink's website. In my case there were only two devices that Windows couldn't identify and had to use the BeeLink drivers. This fresh install, activated as soon as Windows was able to connect to the Internet. If you are not sure about the digital license, boot up the natively installed windows and look at the Settings/System/About page.. it you see Digital License then you are good to go.

I've got to say your timing sometimes is IMPECCABLE sir! I will usually pop in for your new videos, but I'm building a new server next week (when the parts arrive) based on AMD Epyc Milan (7313P). My plan is to do exactly this with Proxmox as Bare Metal OS w/ TrueNAS Scale + other VMs. Reason being I'm absolutely happy with TrueNAS Scale as a NAS OS. However I've continually run into problem after problem after problem with using TNScale's other features: Apps, VMs, etc. all causing me way more pain and suffering than I care to endure. And I normally don't mind a bit of fiddly work, but taking into account how volatile it can cause things to break on the NAS and that's volatility and risk I don't want to introduce to my appliance NAS. Sooo I'm planning on just running other server VMs that handle serving the data and letting TrueNAS Scale just store and share the data via SMB. Wish me luck!

you need a minimum of two network interfaces for pfSense. 1 for WAN and 1 for LAN. you can get the WAN address via DHCP from your primary home router. For TrueNas should have PCI passthrough drives. What's the point of setting up a TrueNas VM without any drives? Good video though because this mini PC is very energy efficient

I am a bit confused by this video. so if you plug your modem into this mini pc , as it is the only eth port, how do you branch out to your lan network ? surely that is the point of pfsense right ? how is proxmox goint to route the network traffic to pfsense and then pfsense to all the other vms ? am I missing something ?

As Robbie said it was more of a teaser than a tutorial. As you may have seen in my comment I wasn't too much for this approach, but if you have taken away some positives, it's good enough I suppose. But to your point, if you google "pfsense single nic" you will find some tutorials how to get it done. The magic sauce is the VLANs and VLAN capable switch. If you don't care much for the slower speeds and complexity it's an option.
@bluesquadron593
@bluesquadron593 5 ай бұрын
Sorry, but no. Your pfsense install and specifically the network install and hardware passthrough was misleading at best. Virtualizing pfsense needs to have some careful thinking how would your entire network react to proxmox host updates. Second, you would need at least two nics to make some sense. Theoretically one could be enough with a managed switch, but that's a further complication. Your proxmox will also need to get ip from the virtual pfsense. Once you have passed through a device to a VM, The proxmox host stops seing it. So you need to have virtual networks also. There is absolutely no use of the wi-fi in pfsense. You have not set up IOMMU passthrough so assigning those to VMs wouldn't have worked anyhow. You had a warning on that. Setting up IOMMU passthrough could be challenging itself. Older or very new hardware may have issues. There are even more considerations, but these are probably enough to show that the presentation you had in the video may cause headaches for some subscribers. I known you mentioned Wendell and that everything is very much hardware specific, but I think a single nic mini pc is just too much.

Sorry, but yes. The point of this video, which you missed entirely, was to provide a high level overview of Proxmox for beginners. As he stated several times, this was not intended as a "one and done" tutorial for everyone's use case. It was meant as a demonstration to folks who may be new to virtualization. I'm sure this video was very helpful to many people's understanding.

@@metrotechguru5863 bluesquadron593 is 100% right. The video is super misleading, TrueNAS virtualized is a no-no for production environment (it's only recommended for testing) plus if you're new to the game following such tutorials does more harm than being helpful.
