This horn brings back memories of hearing it when I was a kid. If the wind was blowing the right direction, it could be heard at our house several miles away.

I rode up front with an engineer in a Metroliner in the straight section near Princeton Junction. The speed indicator said we were going 120mph! Engineer was reading the paper! Honest he was!

Hearing these brought chills up my spine!!! Quick story...my grandmother lived in the mobile home village (nice way of saying trailer park!) across from Bengies drive in on Eastern Blvd in Middle River, MD in the '70s. Her home was way in the back, close to the electric tracks. I remember going there with my mom, and being about 5 or 6 and she'd walk me through the tree line that separated the mobile home from the tracks. We'd sit there for hours watching freight and passenger, pulled by GG-1's, E-33's, E-44's, and last but definitely the best, the metroliners! I remember them in Penn Central and Amtrak liveries. But the thing I remember the most? That horn. Back then, there were a lot of at grade crossings from Baltimore north. On chilly evenings at dusk, I seem to remember that horn carrying an almost eerie echo. It just didn't sound "normal". I've always loved the NEC, but the metroliners will always be my favorites. Thanks for the memories and for letting me share mine.

In my opinion, I dislike the K5LA horns that Amtrak put on the Metroliners when they converted them into cab cars - I mean, not a bad sound, just ... there is something about the harmony of these two Leslie horns together that is almost ... magical...

Aberdeen! Especially with snow on the ground, haunting sound from those Metroliners.

Same here, I grew up around a similar sounding horn. Every time it would always ring a bell and I would run to see the train pass. I think it was also a leslie and it had a haunting echo sometimes.

Beautiful 2-chime, and you are right, one bell often went silent or just couldn't be heard at high speeds.

My favorite sound from the 70's! Most of them squealed, and that only made it more interesting. They were so high-pitched, for a while we thought they were electronic, until we got a close look.

It sounds like my home in the Northeast, well, while it was far away from the Northeast Corridor, it still reminds me of the NEC, And it's beautiful past and glory. While watching a movie made by PC to get federal funding, I heard a metroliner with a deaper horn. This reminds me of the Pennsy, and the beautiful engines that roamed it's lines to the very end, to the merger, and into Amtrak and Conrail. That's how I feel watching this video.

Wow, I never knew i was recording something so significant at the time. I have a couple of recordings of the S55x on Amtrak Hiawatha service Chicago to Milwaukee from the 1990's. One of the recordings in particular it was a snowy day and i thought the horn was slightly clogged from the fresh fallen powdery snow. I never realized the horn was not as clogged as i thought and, it was a former PCC horn.
@mafarnz8 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I haven't heard of that use of the S55 until now. Do you happen to have pictures of the horn, or a rooftop shot of the locomotive that shows it well? I'm wondering if it was actually a single chime S55, or just a multi chime that had all the lower bells not sounding. For example the SDP40F's had a four chime horn that was a 31, 37, 48, 55 combo, so if all but the 55 bell had stopped sounding it would sound like an S55.
@BossSpringsteen698 жыл бұрын
Sad to say i don't have any pictures of the horns. Now you got me second guessing myself thinking it might have been a multi chime with lower bells not sounding. I know that they had just started using the metroliners somewhat recently and, my other guess would be that they used horns off of other equipment. Anyway, i learned something new.
@mafarnz8 жыл бұрын
When the Metroliners were first put into cab car service, all Amtrak did was paint the stripes on the end. I have seen pictures of them as cab cars with the pans, traction motors and other traction equipment still in place, as well as with the S37/S55 horns. Later as they got traction equipment removed the Leslie's were replaced with K5's.
@travelsonic7 жыл бұрын
I dunno how to articulate why I feel this way,the but K5s just feel .... so out of place on a Metroliner M..U - even one converted into a cab car. Not a bad sound at all, don't get me wrong, just ... feels out of place for some reason. (Or maybe the harmonious sound of the S55 + S37 playing together sounds is just so awesome.... ! )

I like the two chime because it is a very unique sounding horn. Not pretty, but distinctive. I like it! I take it Leslie didn't have a designation for this bell combo. As a side note, I think I saw a video of a man from the UK that had this bell combo on a two chime manifold stamped as an S2G, which is odd, because 37 55 is not an S2G.
@mafarnz8 жыл бұрын
+TrainTrackTrav It was a 37 48 combo, which is very close to this. 48 plays an A#, 55 plays a C#. I like it because of the history and the uniqueness of it. Most horns I have for the sound, but this is a good historical piece.

I don't know if this would be possible, but I would love to hear these somehow be made to foul like the real ones did, producing that very distinct shrill two-note sound. There is basically no decent quality audio out there of Metroliner horns in service, and I would like to make a custom ESU project for my Walthers units. With the bullshit tsunami decoders they came with, they sound like refrigerators equipped with an S3L.
@mafarnz3 жыл бұрын
I’ve discovered from other horns that I’ve had over the years that chambers that were glass bead blasted inside often squeal and malfunction. If I ever end up with another set I could play around with that. I’ve heard the Walters units, not super impressed with the sound.

Pity about the Metroliners. I'm told that as EMU sets they weren't successful. But at least they had proper trucks, rather than those flimsy - looking Budd Pioneer III types found under Silverliners and the like. Is it right that the "Museum" two of the prototype Pioneer III MU's were sent to scrapped them ? What a shame if so.
@mafarnz8 жыл бұрын
I'm only aware of a single Metroliner car that was preserved, the #860 at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. This is the first I have ever heard of the prototype pair. The electrical systems had components from several different manufactures, and it is my understanding they didn't work well together. The fact that the cab car conversions are still in service shows that at least the trucks frames and car bodies were well built... they were a Budd product after all!
@travelsonic7 жыл бұрын
It's too bad, a lot of unconverted Metroliners were, for a time, stored, some in Phase II scheme even, a number of which were modified to have the hump on top that housed the electrical components, a number of them remaining unmodified though - I bet they're all good and scrapped now. :(
@mafarnz7 жыл бұрын
