Welcome to part 2 of the Paul Reed Smith David Grissom Trem guitar repair. In this video some decisions are made from the first video and I disassemble the guitar to get clear access to everything I want to fix. I start with a fret dress (time lapse) and move on to getting a close up of the headstock damage. The electronics and controls are gutted to make way for a new wiring scheme and new pickups and the bridge is removed, oiled and cleaned.
There will be at least two more videos on this guitar since there was so much work to be done. I hope you enjoy the upgraded video quality and little more editing as I learn what the heck I'm doing with creating video content.

five watt world Thanks! Glad you are enjoying them. I’ve got all the work done and a couple more videos in the editing process. I haven’t recorded the new sounds/tones yet but look forward to doing that as well.

Aloha^^ 7:37 What are you using for crowning the frets? Looks interesting. 7:54 You did the scratching during the crowning in the same direction, why not sand along the neck here? (horribly loud but it probably would take out more scratches.) Btw...very enjoyable video. The editing, the close up shots. It was worth all the work. Looking forward to the next part and especially the polishing of the top. I looked through your clean website and you have to do a guitar finish video series. When you have all that knowledge, please share it. That way it'll carry on after the courses are long gone. Boedigheimer sounds german, got any roots in Germany?

Thanks for the kind words. I had fun with this video for sure. I use one of the Stew Mac diamond crowning files that has the curved edges. I’ve tried every file they sell and this one continues to be my favorite: www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Files/Offset_Diamond_Fret_File.html The more you use them the better they get. I sand and refine the frets with a rubber sanding grip from Lee Valley and as long as the fingerboard is taped off it’s fast and easy to sand the frets lengthwise. I polished the frets this time with a Dremel and felt wheel and did a little sanding with fine micro mesh before removing the tape. Once the tape was off I was just lightly sanding the wood with fine micro mesh to get rid of burnish marks left behind from the scraping of dirt and grime I did to clean by the frets. That last little sanding of the fingerboard just cleans it up and gives it a nice sheen. I usually avoid polishing or sanding frets with bare wood exposed to keep it clean. As far as finishing videos that’s something I’ve considered but for the most part right now I’m just documenting various projects I have (guitars, amps and maybe some pedals). The name is German and from what I understand there was/is a town somewhere in Germany where the name originated after ancestors moved to America. I’m afraid I don’t know much about it though. I appreciate you taking time to comment. It’s good to hear from people after making these videos!

Thank you for the link and the info. I couldn't make out what file you used, the improvised grip you added (foam and tape?) concealed it. Bödigheim is a township of Buchen and is first mentioned in the 11th century. The coat of arms is that red tower. I'm in the state of Bavaria, (southeast) of Germany. If you're interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buchen Maybe you ancestors came from there.

onpsxmember Thank you! Yes our ancestors came from there and I will definitely check out that link. Yes I did wrap foam around the file and taped it. Should have mentioned that. Fret dresses can be time consuming and so the foam helps. I was thinking of a 3D printed handle that could fit around it but haven’t gone about drawing anything up.

You don't have to. There was a video from stewmac where Dan has some putty that you press in form and it hardens into the perfect grip. After the blob hardens while you withstand the heat of the reaction, you can cut a slot in it and add the file. Just search for ergonomic grip and stewmac. I forgot the title.

the PRS installed Frets are Done with superglue drip system on the frets thats why you can't move them

Jeff Lake thanks for the message. I’m not sure what you mean by a drip system but just using super glue doesn’t prevent a fret from eventually working loose. I wasn’t surprised at all these frets were rock solid in the slots. PRS know how to make very high quality guitars. Any link you might have for more research would be great.

Hi BB, Do you recall what you set the height of 6 trem screws to and how much float? Thanks,
@bbmade

Mark W - Hmmm, I don’t remember exactly sorry. The trem was set up off the body slightly so there was probably a 1/16” gap between the body and bottom of the bridge. Not much more than that. You could set it higher but then you’d probably lower the saddles for decent action. Those bridges are really nice, well made and don’t seem designed to float up high. Hope that helps!
