#Gibson #PRS
How does the PRS 594 compare to a Gibson Les Paul 1959 reissue? In my quest to decide whether to keep my Paul Reed Smith 594 singlecut or doublecut, I've decided to compare them to my Gibson Les Paul to find out which one is more unique. In this first video I'll compare the Doublecut 594 vs Les Paul, then I'll do a follow up video to compare the Singlecut 594 vs Les Paul.
What do you think? Is the PRS 594 doublecut more similar or different to the Les Paul? Which do you prefer? Let me know in the comments!
Rock on!
-Johnny Z

@@geraldhills41 the Dragon bridge pick up in the custom 22 was ridiculously hot. I ended up replacing mine at the recommendation of folks at Seymour Duncan with a George Lynch, Screamin Demon, pick up; the name makes it sound as though it’s a metalhead pick up, but it’s actually just a somewhat hotter version of a PAF (even has an alnico magnet). I believe it has 10K resistance or so vs much closer to 20K for the Dragon. Much nicer tone out of that. Dragon was ridiculous, though I kept to give to new owner if I ever sell it. Strange thing is that the Dragon neck pickup is nowhere near as hot.

Fantastic playing as always. The PRS has greater clarity whilst the LP has that classic warmth. Man .. tough one for sure. I'd go with the PRS coz I think it offers both traditional and more "modern" sounds. It's tough to beat the LP sound if that's what one particularly wants, but the PRS gets close enough.

@BAMozzy69
@BAMozzy69 Жыл бұрын
I agree - although I would say that the LP has that classic 'muddy warmth we have come to expect and define as the 'LP' tone. The 594's clarity is perhaps down to the slightly less muddy, yet 'full' Humbucker. Both sound superb and its just a matter of preference. For me, I went with the 594 DC because it was a lighter guitar, much cheaper than an R9 Custom Shop, felt more comfortable to play, especially at the dusty end, and had a few more 'modern' features that I prefer too. Can't really go wrong with either and both will give you that 'sound'. Your audience wouldn't know which you used - especially in a mix and most 'hear' with their eyes anyway...

I think the "hands down" is peculiar, when people are comparing these guitars. What makes the LP preferred in many cases is the emotional attachment people have to the brand, and the music these guitars have produced over the years. People hear that LP and think, "man, that right there, that is the sound of my teenage years. It's home." Take the emotional context out of it, and I don't see how anyone of these guitars can hands down win anything. They both sound just as good as each other with some variations here and there. I wish some of the guitar content creators would do these tests blindly, because most of the time people are hearing these comparisons with their eyes. I remember seeing the Silver Sky comparison to the Fender Standard and the test was blind, and people ended up preferring the PRS. I'm not saying you are particularly doing that. You are very well entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. You can't be wrong. The LP has a beautiful sound, but the "hands down" suggests these guitars are very far apart, and they aren't.

This has to be one of the nicest comparisons I have ever seen on KZfaq. The exact same riffs, through the same signal chain back to back. No interruptions between the A-B helps a lot with hearing the actual difference. The little commentary between each segment is also really nice. It's a tough call to make. Both are excellent sounding instruments that are probably excellent choices regardless of what you want to do with them. I personally gravitate towards the PRS because of the double cut body. Allows slightly easier access to the upper frets. How much do they weigh? As that would be another factor in choosing what guitar I'd pick.

Great playing! The Les Paul wins hands-down in maybe 80% of those excellent comparisons for me. The PRS sounds like it's missing something in the mid-range in comparison, but the big thing for me is the Paul sounds open, alive, and more like human singing in the way it is voiced. For blues leaning music that you seem to like, that open, singing sound works so well, while in comparison, the PRS sometimes sounded veiled. I like guitars that sing, and your Les Paul is a beautiful one in that regard.

Great playing! I’ve been debating selling my 2002 Les Paul standard to fund a PRS DGT, love how my Les Paul sounds but I’ve been struggling with tuning stability issues forever and I’ve always hated how Les Pauls sit on the lap when sitting, it’s not a guitar that I play for hours.

Thanks, David! I used to have a DGT that I regret selling (luckily I kept in the family so can still borrow it). It will definitely solve both of those problems for you!

After owning 2 LPs that I ultimately sold because of tuning issues that would never go away despite setups, I’m the happy owner of a PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody II. The thing plays like a dream. No regrets. Not saying I won’t buy a Gibson again one day, but the playability and craftsmanship of a PRS is pretty unmatched amongst the main big brands. Plus you don’t have to search for a year to find a good one haha (speaking from experience).

Some guitars give me a guide on what to play with this instrument with just one stroke. 59 is something like that. Some guitars are like white paper. There's no guide. no rules. Just needs imagination. That's how I felt when I first got McCarty SC594. I'm a 24.5-inch holic, and I make love to these two instruments every day. Tradition and imagination are two essential things for musicians. So these two guitars inspire me every day. Precious dudes.

Great vid! PRS seemed more defined to my ear/speaker setup, but almost too close to call for most ears. Perhaps feel/weight/ergos would be a major consideration. I am a died in the wool PRS guy since 1999 ish...... BUT..... I do love my 1998 gold top R6 w/P90's. They both do a thing. When all else fails, keep all the guitars!

Thanks for doing the shoot out. It confirms at least for me what I’ve been experiencing. I have bought three PRS guitars and returned two of them because I felt my Les Paul sounded better. The PRS I did keep was the custom 22 soap bar 3 P-90s. It’s my super Strat. Love all the PRS builds but feel the PRS humbucker pickups are lacking without the help of pedals. Personal taste but even thru my phone I hear the difference.

Great video. Beautiful guitars. Tasty licks. In all honesty, how is your tuning stability on the Les Paul? In my experience they’ve fought me tooth and nail to stay in tune. I can only imagine the PRS is rock solid in that area.

Great video! Instant subscribe… I NEED MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS IN MY LIFE!! Lol, gorgeous tones throughout and very beautifully shot. The PRS somehow takes the traits of THE quintessential classic electric guitar and carves its own taste into an established spectrum. The tones from each are perfect, so as far as which one wins, I vote for the better feeling one in hand or the one that conjures more inspired playing.

Other than a reduction in the sound of your fingers sliding on the strings on the Gibson compared to the PRS, I couldn't really tell the difference. What I'd like to know from you is how is the playability difference in the 3 major portions of the next for each guitar? How's string buzzing (if there is any)? How's the action when playing? Are you putting in more effort to play the Gibson than the PRS or vise versa? Did the Gibson go out of tune at all while playing and string bending due to the rake on the headstock? Or is that all a myth? This is all stuff we can't hear but is extremely valuable.

Kudos to PRS for finally approaching the LP tone. With the separate tone and volume controls on the PRS humbuckers, I was surprised you couldnt dial in the tone to match the LP? I still like the classic kick ass look of the LP but it is a coin toss. I would keep the LP over the PRS if I had to make that choice.

If it was a beauty contest PRS would win hands down no problem and they are top shelf quality. When you buy a PRS u know what it will sound like and how it's gonna play with is great of course. The Gibson is not always like that. Les Paul guitars all sound different. I've had a couple different Les Paul's and they each had their own tone. I prefer the Les Paul guitars as long as it's a good one but you don't always pick up a good one but sometimes you pick up a really good one.
