When it comes to citrus and Arizona, they go hand in hand. While tropical trees are unique and very hard to get a harvest from, citrus can be quite easy here. However, you do need to know a few basics for citrus care and now is the time we take care of most of those!

These really do well with just a bit of pruning. They eventually figure it out and shoot both up and out as opposed to down.

Hi friends! I've always been hesitant on pruning our citrus trees. Over the past few years we have been pruning them in the fall. Citrus does so well here in our lower desert. Your pruning technique shows we can really prune ANYTIME of the year. Thanks for the video and giving us the confidence to prune and protect our citrus trees now. Your trees look very happy 😎

Hey Aaron! We have always pruned ours during this time of year mainly so we can thin and prune at the same time. Plus we have all of this growing time still left for them to grow right back in! But really, any time of year is probably fine. Maybe not mid-summer, but otherwise...

Thanks for the tips! I’ll be pruning my citrus orchard this week, they are only a year old though so most of the pruning will be the support species. We will be making a video of it too 😉

I told you Felco 2 is BRILLIANT in small,medium cuts. I'll even buy 2 more this coming winter . I only have a backyard garden, barely 12 fruit trees and 2 dwarf new fruit trees. I'm the Lebanese mountains gardener. I live in Beit Chabab, a peach main growing village.

Felco pruners are indeed very good ones! I was hesitating which ones to buy, but when participating in a grape pruning party, the organizer had different pruners - I liked the most (because of size and handgrip) Okatsune pruners. Have you bumped into rattlesnakes when your're pruning trees? Those low-hanging branches look indeed like great hideouts for animals.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm

Those Felco pruners are definitely an upgrade from the Corona we have always used. A bit pricier though! We haven't had a rattler come out of the underbrush, but we do see a few each year, so we figure it's better safe than sorry!

Rattlers? Oh, geeez, kids! They’re not a problem a-tall! They only take small bites. Citrus leaves make a tasty tea. It’s said to be wildly healthy, too. I’d like to see the Meyers become bushes like that. Major problem is, never enough mulch. Another is ground squirrels burrowing under the trees. But! Rattlers to the rescue. Only small bites, but very telling. Mind, I’m no kopeli (snake priest) but rattlers seem to understand when I tell them, keep your fangs to yourself or I’ll be toasting the devil’s worm on a stick. BTW, they seem to like really shaggy tomato bushes best. And datil yucca thickets. That pile of scrap wood out back. Under the tool shed. The neighbor’s shaggy yard and their morning glory vines where packrats love to feed. hasta and happy summer!

Ok, I'll do it to our one lemon tree in a pot here in so Utah. Btw, I was told to invest in a pair of felcos 30 years ago when I got into roses and that pair (with periodic sharpening) is still going strong. I love the smaller size for my hand and it keeps my husband from using mine instead of his! When I teach others how to prune I'm aghast at what they pull out to try to prove with!

Lol Duane, every time you break out Corona clippers I think, he really should try Felco. As soon as I saw them I thought to myself once you try them you’ll never go back to Corona. Out here a lot of the vineyard owners and farm labor providers use Corona because they’re pretty good pruners but relatively cheap and easily serviceable, but nothing comes close to the feel and cut quality of Felco pruners.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm

Boy are you absolutely right on Jared. They reached out to us to try them out and we are now buying additional pairs, so we don't have to share! We are keeping the Corona for the pruning classes though! 😉

@jaredmccutcheon5496 2 ай бұрын
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Haha, yes, Corona are great for I’d say lighter use, so classes would be perfect, but if you’re pruning for hours on end you owe it to yourself to have the best available, in addition to all the power tools. Having good tools makes something that’s more like a job than a chore a lot more enjoyable. I come from a construction background and I learned long ago to invest in tools that make the job easier and more accurate and you’ll never regret it.

Very off topic. Your farm encouraged me to get get my own chickens. I acquired 12 new girls this year. I ignorantly left the door open to the chicken run while I gave them water and grain. 1st batch of 4 are almost ready for laying, on their last molt. The other 8 are all 2.5 months from last molt. Leaving the door to the run open was not smart. All the newbies decided to explore. I got all back in but 1. Now I’m sitting on my porch waiting for her to come around to the run door. Got any suggestions? I’m western NC, in the country with bobcats, owls, possums and raccoons at night… this makes me frantic. They are my babies… Can you help. Wow! Fruit trees looking awesome! I’m so amazed at your operation. 👍🏻🤜🏼 I’m 62. I really want to myself the DeWalt trimmer. 😎

First off, congrats on those new girls! We love ours and they are so important to everything we do here on the farm. Ok, I can't speak for every chicken, but typically they all come back to roost right before dark. My hunch is you'll see her stroll up there expecting to roost later tonight. One tip for the future, train your girls to scratch. We use an old peanut can full of scratch and shake that every night before we put them to bed. Now they come running as soon as they hear that sound no matter the time of day!

I was given a small citrus in a pot for Christmas. It’s fruited and now I’m potting it on and it’s started to grow. I put it on my brightest window cill and if we get a summer this year I’ll put it out in the sun. I’m hoping it’ll flower and fruit again. How can I encourage that? I’m in Yorkshire UK 10:20

Oh wow, what a great challenge for you over there! Well, I'm not sure I will have the best advice as I (Duane) am from California (about perfect for citrus) and obviously it grows well here. I will say, the most important timing is when it flowers. It needs to be warm (not hot) and bees are required to pollinate it well. I suppose it's a matter of watching for those flowers. Oh and be sure to fertilize with a fruit tree fertilizer. They are designed to encourage flowering and fruit set. Cheers and good luck!

My neighbors grapefruit tree always grows so high, it blocks my mountain view, so I'm the one who trims it, but I just top it. If citrus grow to high, you can't reach the fruit...and then there are those pesky thorns. They hurt!!

How do you take out the ants in the desert
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 2 ай бұрын
We generally don't do anything for ants as they can be beneficial (drilling into the hard soil). However you can use tree tanglefoot around the trunk to keep them off your fruit. If you don't mind chemicals, Amdro works really well.

We have an old pomelo tree surviving with badly burned bark. Could we paint the exposed wood underneath the peeling dead bark too? I had to transplant this pomelo a week ago. This will help me to understand how much branch and leaf to leave on the tree. I have worked with both Corona and Felco, and the feature I like most of both, is that I don't have the go buy a whole pair of pruners every time a small part breaks or wears out. All the smaller parts are replaceable at a fraction of the price of the whole.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 25 күн бұрын
Yes, you can paint over the trunk of the tree where the damage occurred. It probably won't heal over at this point on an old tree, but it may stop further damage from occurring. The most important thing is keeping the tree from receiving any additional direct sunlight on the trunk. Either with paint or a canopy to protect it. Very true on those pruners. The ability to replace parts is much more cost effective than always buying a new pair!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm thank you very much for your advice. We also have 100F+ temperatures for days on end during midsummer, so this is a real concern. It is a regular old fashioned light yellow pomelo, but the very sweet fruit are so pleasant when ripened on the tree. Grapefruit and lemon are the only citrus I dare eat to not stir up inflammatory flare-ups.
