My dad said prune it until you think you have killed it and its perfect!LOL He had a cherry tree that the bark was peeling I was skepticle as to him saving it.He whitewashed the bark with a lime paste and it healed it!The tree was about 12 ft tall so he could do this, old world knowlege

You have some crazy growth on that pear, like 6’ in a year. I would ease off on removing branches and focus on training it. Remember pear is the exception when training, bent to horizontal, not below. All the others can be below horizontal. You have some beautiful soil there.

Using ratcheting pruners has been a great help to me if you have arthritis or any trouble with your hands/arms the ratcheting mechanism makes it much easier to do without causing you more pain.

They also make a pair of electric pruners( battery packed) that makes pruning very easy. My dad bought a pair, HE LOVES THEM

As An Arborist I would suggest that any fruit tree pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before bud break to minimize damage to the tree

As a permie, it took me 3/4 of the video to figure out your reasoning. I love your enthusiasm and humor! Maybe talk about your paradigm up front in future. You're talking about "food forest" as a camouflage as well as permaculture food forest.

I've been leaving all my fruit trees go wild for yrs due to me being a trucker. Now I'm injured I can't trim the trees. I'm planting what I can of berries, daffodils, garlic. Zone 6a almost 6b. I know I will have people taking food in yrs to come.

My wife is prior military I’m trying to get her to think of what you think she was in the US Army and it’s kind of hard to get her to think in the same things but she was never raised in that kind of environment like I was so I already had the idea in my mind embrace it.…

Invasive plants and animals are not an issue if they taste good. Just a built in form of food security.

I often wonder if espalier would be a great choice for food forest, it's a lot of investment in the beginning but down the road it would keep the lanes and help maintain the desired spacing of everything

Due to space limitations and the forest canopy overshadowing, I have sort of a ‘Food Forchard’. I was drooling for a couple of your pear cuttings to use as scion wood for a Bradford Pear that I plan to cut down, saving a few pencil sized shoots to graft onto. I would be very happy with any pear variety cuttings you can spare. Maybe half a dozen would be adequate if you don’t mind. Let me know mailing cost and I’ll send it to you.

If you would check with your local County Extension office, many times they have scion swaps and gift meetings for the locals. It is wonderful because often they are varieties that do the very best in your area.

Just because it's a food forest, that doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't prune and maintain things, especially if it bothers you not to! I don't understand your thinking on that. You are their caretaker, and if you have the ability to do so--prune!
