Back to basics with fruit tree pruning - Step 3: how to prune the branches. Go methodically along each one removing clutter to bring light, shortening overly long laterals for lots of fruit, thinning out wood that's gotten too big for renewal shoots and heading the end back to where you want it. Remember to admire all the fruit buds as you go. They've grown just for you.

Helpful and clear, thank you. Your book is also wonderfully clear. About to go outside and consider what I should cut off my young fruit trees. This was a great inspiration.

Thanks for the video. Something worth remembering when pruning with pruning shears is to always keep the blade towards the portion you’re going to retain. If the anvil is towards the portion, you’re going to retain, you will crush the branch collar or stem. It’s a finer point, but I think you will find it. It’s beneficial as the wound heals more quickly when it is undamaged. Here in the US the average life of a Peachtree is just nine years. That is because stone fruit have a limited capability to form water, sprouts to replace the vegetation, that has been pruned away. Most trees are over pruned and in the case of stone fruit They are unable to replace the vegetation quickly enough. Happy spring!

Another great video Cath. Thank you. A tip for those who like me, have difficulty seeing the scaffolds and leaders etc. Put on a LED headlight and go out at night to have a good look at your trees! The bright light really shows up the structure with the dark behind.

these have been a joy to watch and are very informative! will you post any about how to prune in order to train a young tree (1st or 2nd year of growth) into both single leader and vase shapes? would love to see more for trees at different stages!

Do you happen to know what the tree’s response would be if I summer prune the grafted laterals? These are 4-5 year established espaliers (apple and a pear) that have been completely unproductive.

Thank you for the video. I have a question and I'm hoping you can help. I'm here in Southeast Iowa (5B). I have two peach trees. I have scaffold branches, several laterals on each scaffold branch. Pruned them this summer but neglected to wait for late summer. The top half of my scaffolds are new growth from spring. The laterals on these scaffold branches are also new growth from spring. Since I pruned two weeks ago, I'm getting laterals all up and down where I thought there would be flower buds. Will these new summer laterals have time to form fruiting buds before next spring, or did I mess up by triggering new growth and have lost what would be fruit bud growth on spring growth that would be second year fruiting wood? Thanks for any advice.

I had some Asian pear. Before I prune them. I'd like to ask you which way is the best ? 1. Modified leader 2. Open center 3. Central leader.
