Our okra plants are mammoth sized!! Recently we experimented by pruning the tops of our okra to get more prolific plants. We're getting great results! So today we're pruning our entire patch in hopes of getting a fresh Autumn crop. More to come!! :D

Actually, you should be cutting all of them just a couple inches above ground. Those upper stalks may give you 0-2 okra, but the rest just cuts the nutrients from what is trying to grow below. That new growth NEEDS those nutrients, because they will BOOM! How fun!

I’m growing Texas Hill Country Red okra this year as an experiment (from Baker’s Creek Seeds) and so far it is 16 feet tall. I can’t reach the tops anymore so have just topped them off. Hoping they start growing back from the bottom. This is the most productive okra I’ve ever seen and the stems are super thick and strong. I live in San Antonio, Texas.

I live here in San Antonio too! I have four okra plants, and my tallest one is coming up on 6 feet. I have spineless okra, and I had considered topping off the tallest plant if it gets to where I can't reach. This is my first time growing produce, and my okra plants have been very successful!

@@lanetracarther7282 I did top off several of my tallest okra plants and this caused the plants to branch more, thus producing even more okra. Wow, I didn’t expect that, so will do this every year going forward when they get too tall to bend easily for harvesting.

Try the motherland okra from Baker Creek. It gets crazy big and the pods are short and fat. Turned out very good for me here in Central Florida.

the same with sunflowers, once they stop blooming cut stalk halfway down and new buds appear everywhere within a few days

Wow. My okra is first crop to be very successful this hot Florida summer. But learning I can top it off pretty soon makes me happy that I found your video. No one else has mentioned it. Thank you.

Im in 10a SW FL and I recommend to everyone *SWEET POTATOS*. They love the florida summers and are pretty low maintenance to grow. The more tropical/wild the variety the better, those varietys seem to thrive in our extreme heat/moisture. I started slips from organic purple sweet potatos I bought at publix one year and they've been impossible to kill 😂

I accidentally lobbed the top off of one of mine and put it in search to see if anybody could tell me if I should go ahead and put it down, so I'm happy to see this and the other comments saying it will produce again. Food prices are outrageous this 2024 year .

Those big green leaves at the top produce the most photosynthesis for the plant to absorb light and make energy aka fruit.

So great you will be getting another harvest! If you cut them even lower wouldn't they get all the nutrients they needed instead of it going up the stalk? That's what I do with tomatoes so why not okra?

My okra branches out like that at each leaf node. I have so much okra in my freezer from previous years I only planted 6 plants this year. I like to eat it raw when the pods are 1 1/2-2 inches long. I don’t live anywhere near the Deep South and I thought okra was a heat lovin plant

I did this to my okra plants last year In Texas zone 8A, after watching this video, and it severely cut my yield down. The results were very disappointing. The plants that I didn't prune this way kept on producing abundantly. The plants I pruned I only received a few okra from a whole 15ft row. I did the pruning in the beginning September. This comment is just to add to the information pool. If you are in my area proceed with caution.

It depends on what your tempatures are like and how many warm weeks you still have where you live prior to the weather turning colder. This woman lives where it is tropical, I believe. Cutting them back, does work and gives the plants a boost.
