Pruning a grapevine is essential for healthy grape growth. Most grapevine pruning videos are targeted at professional vineyards. But for those who grow grapes in their city homes, terraces or small farms, a simple pruning approach may work.
In this video, Manisha Lath Gupta from Aanandaa Permaculture Farm, shares her tips on how to prune a grapevine growing in your garden.
A grapevine has a trunk, two arms, spurs and canes.
The trunk is the main stem of the grapevine, going up the trellis.
The arms are the two branches which spread on either side on the trellis.
The spur is the node which repeatedly growing after pruning and produces canes.
Canes are stems produced by the grapevine, after the grape fruit has been produced and harvested.
Grapes grow on old wood. So we need the spurs to keep producing new growth with grapes each year. In order to make this happen, we trim back the canes leaving only one or two nodes which will trigger new growth.
Any wimpish thin canes are cut from the base. The vine is shaped and steered around the trellis, such that it grows in a more structured and systematic way.
Hope you find this video useful. Do leave your comments and subscribe to our channel for more such information.

Very useful information, I have a grapevine and will prune as you said and see how it fares this year. Two years ago it had few bunches, but last year I didn’t prune and I had no fruit. I hope I’m not too late with pruning this year. I also plan to make more plants by cuttings. Thanks ❤️🇵🇰

Thank u for this video. My grape vine on our terrace needs pruning & I can assure u that it's easy to grow new grape vines from those cuttings, because I m saying this from my experience. I've a grown from cuttings & they root easily in well draining soil & spring is the best season for this purpose.

Hi. Thanks for this video. For Indian monsoon scenario when should we prune? My vine is 18months old now and has trunk + 2 arms and many spurs along with short fresh canes. As it is currently raining, lot of green leaves on all canes. Should I wait till about September and prune?

I planted a grape wine 4-5 months ago and since then it's not growing. All winter months has gone and still it has two thin branches and 4 to 5 green leaves. It almost stopped growing.

very cool but isn't using only wood chips kind of a monoculture and not how we see soil cover in nature.

Not at all! If you go to a forest you'll see wood chips and dried leaves etc on the floor, wherever there is no vegetation. Thats an absurd idea!

Thank you Manisha for such wonderful content. I have watched several of your videos ever since I came across one a while ago. I have one question. Do you use hybrid seeds or heirloom ones and where do you source them from? I recently watched a video that exposes how companies that produce hybrid seeds have disregarded the angle of nutrition and the food we eat today has almost half the nutrition that was present in our traditionally grown crops. I'd appreciate it if you touched on this topic. Thank you. PS: This is the documentary that I watched: Double The Price & Half the Nutrients: A Fruit & Veg Monopoly | Seeds of Profit Food Documentary

I use open pollinated seeds as much as possible. For some exotics, i do use hybrids, but it is not my preference. I've been collecting seeds over the years and building my own seed bank. Now i share my seeds in our online shop. You can check that out. Thanks for the movie recco. Will watch!
