Pruning My Neglected Table Grape For Better Flavor

Growing grapes at home is fun and rewarding but pruning grapes can seem a little intimidating with methods like "spur" or "cane" pruning. In this video I talk about how to think and approach a grape plant that hasn't ever been pruned "correctly." The idea is that any grape can be pruned to produce good grapes and you don't have to overthink it.

PS - Save those cuttings. Grapevine has 100 uses in the garden. It's tough and somewhat bendable. You could make a few mini trellises for support, pack them in a Hugelkultur-filled raised bed, use to block paths, so many things. . . When I was a kid, a man at the river made spectacular grapevine baskets. His were works of art.

I would definitely be interested in more pruning videos about other kinds of vines and fruit trees and bushes. Pruning is an art and it is very scary. I know i have to cut back a lot but am not always sure about the best parts to keep and what is actually hindering the growth and productivity of the plant. I loved the way you took us step by step explaining the why of each action. Brilliant. Please do more. 💜 ❤️

This is a great video! More often than not, I am behind the power curve when it comes to pruning so I really appreciate the videos that show how to prune an overgrown or seemingly messy plant. Your simple step by step demonstration with the 10-15 nodes is very easy to follow and remember. Now I need to find a video to help me identify my primocanes and floricanes on the blackberry vines I didn't remove in the fall! Keep up the great work. You are appreciated!

I planted what I thought were seedless grapes, one concord and one muscadine. Turns out both are seeded, but c'est la vie! Grew a nice trunk and trained the canes adequately. The third year grapes were outstanding. Nice harvest and superb flavor. I seeded a bunch and made jam, and they were great table grapes too. I can always learn more, so please keep sharing with us. Lots of great info! You really do want to take a lot of the grapes. I work at a small local winery (making the wine and taking care of the vinyard) and your spot on with all your info! It's very similar to what we're currently doing with our wine grapes. We have two trunks coming up and spitting into about two feet or so and we cut back until there's only 5 spurrs per side for a total of 10 per plant. And we cut back to only two buds per spur. We are not very precise and really don't baby our plants (many are 30+ years old however) we have many that we cut down with the intention of killing and replacing, and every year they get hard core sprayed with chemicals and they always come back. So don't worry toooo terribly much, they are resilient little buggers! We don't grow them on a fence like you do. We grow them on a single wire about hip level. And then have the cordons very close together, many touching and then going to canes along the wire, and then we try to get the 5 or so spurrs.

I got quotes to build a structure for two grapevines to spread. $750 and $350, which would make them the most expensive grapes ever eaten. Built the structures myself with t-bars and 9-gauge wire. Not pretty, but functional and about $50 total. It hurts to cut them back so much, but they bounce back beautifully.

I bought a grape vine from an unreliable source. This is one of the first things I planted when I got a backyard. I’m not sure of the type they are but the leaves got these awful bumps underneath - which I discovered in research that are caused by a pest. These pests go underground during winter and come back. The vines had grown for a few years so it’s very difficult to completely remove the stump. (Maybe your pups can give me a hand…😂). I chop them down as far as I can but they still try to come back. I think I read that it’s the type of grape I planted that is not resistant to this pest.
