I also have to thank you for the very informative video. I have had a garden for over 40 years and this was the first year that I grew pumpkins. Having six plants in a 10'X12' garden, I had vines all over the place thinking that I would have an abundance of pumpkins.I only have 6 pumpkins, which are nice size, but I know I should have had more. It's the end of the growing season for the pumpkins, but I will be using your method for next year. Thank you

Your video is the best video I've seen to date on not only pruning pumpkin vines, but how to tell the difference between the different vines, and I can't forget the explanation of leaf mottle, that was almost as important as the pruning, at least for me!! Like one of the other commenters, I've got leaves exhibiting this same pattern (only throughout the entire plant) and, unfortunately, the closest description I could come up with always led to sites about powdery mildew. I, too, panicked and started the plant on a milk regiment (evidently we both found the same sites about powdery mildew). I'm so happy to know there's no need to worry! Another great tip was where to actually make the cut on the vine; early in development, I noticed one of the leaves was pretty tore up looking (probably from recent wind storm), so I decided to cut it off. When I saw that the stem was hollow (1st time gardener, had no clue) and now there was a gaping hole to let in who knows what kind of bacteria and disease; I panicked, ran to the bathroom and now there's a bandaid covering it. Thanks again, great education!!

This was an awesome video thank you so much for sharing. This is my second year growing pumpkins but it's just still too hot here in Florida and I'm getting a lot of Blossom rot without nutrient deficiencies. Can't wait till this weather comes down we still have 92 degrees with 80% humidity and the heat index about 110. Your video was very informational and I'm so happy I found your channel thank you. I look forward to watching your videos as I've been growing for 6 years now and love to hear tips and tricks from other gardeners!

Thank you! I went out and looked. The secondary roots are sustaining the growth now. Next year I will try a sunnier less damp location. I also know about pruning now to help improve air flow. And I'll keep the vines from crossing. Thanks so much for the reply!

Thank you for the video- it was very informative and I like your instructional style! The only thing missing for me was some close-ups and an explanation of how to distinguish the different vines so you don’t accidentally cut off the wrong part (I’ve learned this the hard way with tomatoes); in particular, how to distinguish secondary vines from the tertiary vines growing off of them, and how to tell what a growth tip looks like (it was too small to see on the phone). I also would like to know how big they can get before it’s too late to cut them off without damaging the plant. Do you have another video that gets into this?

Can you prune leaves off the plant to allow for sunlight to reach other plants? I made the inexperienced mistake of planting it near other plants and the leaves are not allowing the sunlight to reach the ones underneath. Next year, I will make sure to give the pumpkins their very own garden lol.

Hey, thank you for this clear video about pumpkins. I have additional questions. What if the plant is very young and you see buds beginning? Do you pinch them off to direct the plants energy or what? Please inform. Thanks.

Thank you for the information on leaf mottle! My plant has it on a few leaves and at first, I panicked and sprayed like crazy with milk, lol! Now I can relax the spraying, but milk is a good nutrient, so no regrets. I started pruning main vines and new female blooms are popping up, so that is also excellent advice. Is it ok to prune dead male flowers or should you leave them as is? Anyway, good advice.

Does a pumpkin only grow off of the primary vine, or can it grow off of the secondary vine too?
@southwesturbanhomestead72097 жыл бұрын
Primary, secondary and tertiary vines will all flower, and if pollination is good all 3 vines will be able to produce fruit.

I had pumpkins start growing in the hole in a cinder block, what should I do? Move it, leave it, etc. Please help.
@southwesturbanhomestead72096 жыл бұрын
Leave it if you want pumpkins. Pull it if you dont. You may be able to move it but theres a good chance youll damage the roots too much pulling it from a small space like that.
