The whammy bar technique is Mikio Fujioka's signature. He was an amazing guitarist and had a unique sound.

Great reaction and analysis. The first guitar solo was from the late and very great Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and as I understand it he had his own very unique style utilising the whammy bar in ways either nobody or very few others do ... there is another guitarist who does many reactions to all sorts and he often says Mikio is his favourite guitarist. The Kami Band (in order of solos) in this video - Mikio Fujioka (RIP), Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH and Hideki Aoyama. As you spotted this was a compilation video with clips from 10 different concerts dating as far back as 2013 (I saw Makuhari Hall, Saitama Super Arena, Wembley Arena in the UK, the Tokyo Dome and the Budokan in Tokyo plus a few more), so not a recent song at all. Obviously they have matured and their music has evolved, but I think some people forget some of their earliest songs (eg IDZ, Headbanger, Megitsune) and others on the first album (eg Akatsuki, Rondo of Nightmare) would not sound out of place on any of their later albums and some of the songs from the 3rd album (eg Da Da Dance, Oh Majinai, PA PA YA) wouldn't have come as much of a surprise on the first album. 'Catch Me If You Can' is the best metal song about playing a game that's a sort of cross between tag, blind man's bluff and hide & seek I've ever heard. It is the perfect mix of the two extremes with the brutal instrumentals and the sweet vocals - and the game they are playing, they're playing with an Oni (a sort of Japanese ogre popular in regional festivals and used specifically to frighten children ... which amuses me probably more than it should). The growling vocals (they are on a backing track) are the Oni asking things like "Are you ready?" and the best response has to be "Maada da yo" (No, not yet) while doing a running away from an Oni dance.

This is still an older song. Their newer songs are even more removed from Gimme Chocolate. The girls are so much older and the music on Metal Galaxy is more mature and experimental. That said, CMIYC is, in my opinion, one of the best representations of the BabyMetal 'sound'. It's quintessential BM vibe, up there with Megitsune. Their older stuff is definitely essential watching/listening, but I think you might be surprised by some of the tracks from their most recent album. 🤘🦊🤘

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 Kami Band members performed in your favorite Gacharic Spin concert as guest players on Dec.26, 2017. Sadly enough that was the very last performance of Mikio (the 1st solo guitarist) who accidentally passed away in Jan. 2018 (RIP). Anyway GS and Kamis are good friends. Kamis are also good friends of Band-Maid. In a popular TV program, Keiko, a lead singer of Show-Ya (a pioneer of Japanese all-female bands) and Saki (Nemophila) emphasized one thing saying "BABYMETAL is not a (ALL-female) band, but thanks to their international success many music fans in foreign countries have discovered female bands in Japan disregarding language barrier. They opened doors for us".

Welcome back to the Foxhole, no rabbit here 🦊🤘 CMIYC is one of their most exponents of their kawaii metal genre they created. Is all about fun while playing a creepy hide&seek tag game with an _Oni_ a mythological japanese creature human flesh eater 👀 Sad you fall on a live compilation I'll leave a recommendation down below about that. Thanks for explaining and sharing your musical knowledge and hope to see next time with more BabyMetal songs. 🦊🤘

We know Amuse is very hard to deal with copyright blocked issues, fortunately we can help you with that if you go to *Babymetal Reactor Resource* channel you'll get full original clips of their best live performance with watermarked logo safe to react, look for "Future Plans" vid, follow instructions and you'll get all of them, upload the one with the logo for us and you can watch without it, don't worry for us we already saw all of them. You'll find some watermarked clips in the channel also with the description and where to get the non-logo version.

@jakemuller8626 2 жыл бұрын
You can also put some heavy opacity and translucent effect to avoid those issues. However there are some safe clips to react like those from Legend 1997 or some of Budokan 2014 or previous to this year and Festivals that is out of reach from Amuse hands. By all means *AVOID* live compilations at least for first time watching, not saying all of them are bad but chances are you'll end up facing the bad ones bad edited, very confusing, switching costumes and distracting you from the performance and meaning of the song. Also avoid Glastonbury Festival performance, the sound is bad and the crowd isn't the usual fans. Here's some examples of safe to react live performances: - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! live at Legend 1997 or Legend I. - Rondo Of Nightmare with Mischiefs Of Gods Intro live at Budokan 2014, this one normally is safe to react without any filters. - Catch Me If You Can, you got live at MetroRock 2015 in Babymetal Reactor Resource channel under the title "CMIYC". Or live at Budokan 2014 with subtitles version at GuilhermeCait channel. - Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere Festival 2014 - Karate live at Download Festival 2016. There's no report to this day from anyone being blocked using BMRR watermarked logo so there you go. Thanks for sharing your BabyMetal reactions. 🦊🤘

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🏃‍♀️👹 This cute song is about playing a game that is like hide-and-go-seek, tag or blind-man's-bluff. Pursued by an "Oni"" which is a kind of Japanese Ogre. : ) While Megitsune is still my favorite, this is one of their their cutest choreographies. If much of their charm is in the blending of the cute and the brutal, this song is a great example. They're all turned up to the max. As other folks have pointed out, this compilation has footage from concerts held from 2013 to 2016. They performed this song quite a bit in 2017, but not since. The last time I saw this one was in Chula Vista, California when they were on tour opening for Korn.

Great reaction and breakdown, thanks! The song premiered live on February 1st, 2013 at the show called Legend "Z". So it was actually an early work. And yep, this is a compilation from several shows (up to 10) between 2013 and 2016. This is probably the heaviest song about playing hide and seek... Yes, "Catch me if you can" is about playing hide and seek or tag... BUT... with an "oni", a sort of Japanese ogre. Hence (possibly) the paranormal feeling Mikio (RIP) wanted to give to his solo. This was my very first BABYMETAL song, so it's very special to me. So, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And yes, this is definitely one of their heaviest songs but it also has one of their cutest choreos, including my personal favorite movement: the infamous "Moa slide" which you noticed 🤣 Until next time!

actually you brought up a point that most dont understand. Babymetal was formed in 2010 to light a fire into a stagnent metal scene in Japan. in my opinion they succeeded. you are right in that Babymetal opened the door for a lot of Japanese bands. Band-Maid, Lovebites, so many more could possibly give credit to Babymetal to open the door for all these cool female bands. also they showed you didnt need to do it the way the elitist said it is suppose to be. production, the crowds, many other things Babymetal kind of set the bar for the others . how can you make a metal song about hide and seek and be fun but this is what Babymetal did. they put fun into metal and that is why a lot of elitists hate. they think metal should be angry and dark. who cares what they say. to me if i like it i like. if i dont like it i dont like it. no other band can do so many different styles and genres and be good a t every one. you have to continue your journey. also Babymetal shows everybody else how to do a show. their shows are experiences. also they are one of a very few bands that are so much better live than the studio versions.

Great reaction. I really liked the depth you went in to regarding the guitar solos. Very educational You will know by now that this song is older but demonstrates that not all their early music was so 'poppy', as is sometimes said. What a lot of people don't appreciate is that Babymetal's early mission was to refresh a tired genre and importantly, to attract younger ears, in particular young girls, to metal music. As such, their early songs were written with this in mind, and older, rusted on metal fans were not the target audience. I think this is the main reason that some more traditional metal fans give Babymetal a bit of raff, the songs simply weren't targeted at them.

1st Guitarist is Mikio Fujioka who was big on harmonics. One of his mentors was Alan Holdsworth (sp). During live events you would hear his harmonics that he would add to each song. He was an instructor at the Japan Music Institute and in other projects such as Trickbox and Kari Band (different from Kami). Also he was in the backing band for singer AIMER. The 2nd guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura was actually a student of his while he attended Japan MI.. His style is different than Mikio's and doesn't use a whammy bar. After Mikio's death he was given Mikio's signature Guitars (ESP Snapper 7 Burgundy Mist and 6 string version too) You will see him using it in shows after 2018. Ohmura has a few signature guitars with ESP, like the one you see in this video (Snapper 7 Twinkle Pink). Also Bassist BOH uses Mikio's Wah Pedal.

The whammy bar antics performed by Mikio Fujioka (sadly no longer with us due to passing away in 2018) are simply an extreme development of a technique used by Jeff Beck for the past 40 years. You should watch Rondo of Nightmare live at Budokan. As for albums i see it in different way. Each one gives glimpse of different metal kind. Sometimes You hear more Iron Maiden , then more Metallica, sometimes goes to Dragonforce etc. It is like discovering metal in its whole. That is why it is epic. It is like playing with LEGO. Too bad you picked a compilation video for this amazing song :( but good reaction nonetheless! The song is about a kind of hide and seek game with an Oni (a japanese ogre of sorts). Btw I really like that you explained the guitar technic being used a little more in detail, that is surely appreciated! On another note, the Kami band members playing with or for Babymetal have a rotation cast of members but for the Japanese shows we’ve seen the same members most of the time. It is possible that one guitarist is switched out if the other one has other duties. Oh and Hideki on the drum set is a beast when it comes to the double base kicks :) That song is from 2013 but if you want to listen/react to something more recent check out any song from their last album “Metal Galaxy” (I recommend “Shanti, Shanti, Shanti”, BxMxC or “Night Night Burn”, or really any other song lol).

Nice recommendations there. Metal Galaxy got such a wide range of rhythms and sounds that idk which song to choose as an exponent of their actual sound, although the girls said "Elevator Girl" is the song showing their mature side, i really like more "Distortion", "Kagerou" or "BxMxC" for the mature side and "PA PA YA!" along with "Oh MAJINAI, NNB and SSS" for the fun side. But certainly all songs in that album got something unique to enjoy without forgetting the most solemn Trilogy Of Lights 🦊🤘

@@jakemuller8626 I don’t think there is such a thing as a “actual sound”, especially with the new song snippets from TOO Black Box. Also I agree the Metal Galaxy album has such a variety of songs, sounds and genres all mixed together, that it is really hard to pick only a few as a recommendation. Tbh Elevator Girl isn’t one of my favourites but it is still a song worth listening to.

I have recently discovered I am finding bands with less polish and more attitude fun not that I'm suggesting you go down any Starcrawler, Soap girls, GoGoPonies rabbit holes, but could be interesting 'first time hearing... reaction vids', would suggest Otoboke beaver but know you've heard them alredy. Interested by what you say re drop tuning and intonation, but not really understanding. If you set up the bass / guitar with those pitches as its origin tones I hope that there wouldn't be an intonation problem, is there still? You also said about changing gauge and using lighter strings to cure this, which again I don't really get. Reason I ask is I am part way through building an Infra-bass project tuned E0, A0, D1 and have just commissioned strings starting at 0.16 gauge for ridiculous cost, now I'm worried.

You were talking about the guitar/bass solos and the players not staying strictly within the lines [my phrasing]... Might be useful to know that the players here are primarily jazz/fusion lovers. Of the 3, Ohmura Takayoshi has had the most focus on metal music, having been a guitarist in Marty Friedman's band for quite a while. (But, of course, Marty also has gone beyond the normal bounds of metal.)

As others have mentioned, this is actually an older song from their first album, which is probably why you had some trouble verbalizing how their sound had changed. If you check out something from their second or especially their third album, you'll see a much bigger and more obvious difference - and in fact, even some tracks from their first album are vastly different from one another. I don't think many people would, without knowing, peg Uki Uki Midnight and Rondo of Nightmare as being from not just the same band, but the same album. ;) It's unfortunate you found a compilation - and not even a high-quality one at that. I saw that moment of confusion on your face during the first solo when the fingers didn't match up with what you were hearing. Despite that, this was one of the best reactions I've seen recently. I appreciated your analysis tempered with genuine enjoyment. :) I really hope you come back to Babymetal soon, even though I know you've got a lot of other bands to do. Whenever you do get back to them, I would highly recommend checking out Rondo of Nightmare live at Budokan Black Night for more sweet solos (though Mikio, the guy with the awesome whammy bar technique, isn't in that one) or the official MV for Iine! for something _really_ different.

Not sure I would say Kagerou is particularly representative of their current sound or style...though I don't know what single song I would pick that _is_ either. Also, @PrymalChaos you should know that if you just search for Kagerou on youtube, you'll find more compilations (because uncut pro-shots of that song all get copyright blocked), which I don't think are the best way to experience a song for the first time. There is, however, a channel called the Babymetal Reactor Resource that uploads said uncut pro-shot videos with translucent logos over them so the copyright bots don't catch them, and if you check out the description of the 'Future Plans' video on that channel, you can find links to a whole bunch of different performances, including Kagerou, uploaded without logos to a video hosting website that doesn't enforce copyright, so you can watch it without a logo yourself and then edit it after the fact. I once had an old guy slag them off for being named Metal ( Like Su Metal, Moa Metal, Yui Metal) but seen ZERO irony in the fact he was wearing a Ramones T-Shirt hahahahaha
