31 years later and still the PS/2 System designed and implemented by IBM still exists on motherboards in 2018. Though how does a PS2 mouse compare vs a USB mouse for input lag? Is there any advantage to using one of these over a G302 or Zowie FK2 for example? Well today I test out the input lag of usb vs ps2 and the results may or may not surprise you :).

Getting a lot of feedback about the testing methodology, if someone wants to recommend me the best ps2 mouse and best ps2 keyboard then we can redo the tests on a 240hz monitor and 1000 fps, that way can see the differences as they come in.

Take a look at how Battle(non)sense does it, by adding a small LED light to the mouse that lights up once the button is pressed. No need to test this, as PS/2 comes standard with an 80hz polling rate [exceptions apply to early PS/2 interfaces & certain performance-orientated devices could go up to 150 & even 200hz]

Another thing about PS/2 mouse is also extremely low CPU usage. On modern system you won't even notice it but i plugged 1000hz usb mouse to pentium 4 single core machine running winXP and while moving mouse on the desktop with no program running the cpu went straight to 100% usage meanwhile dragging PS/2 mouse around the desktop the cpu was chilling at 1-2% usage. I even tried putting the usb mouse to 125hz polling rate and while dragging the mouse around cpu was still at like 20%+ usage

Thanks for this overview/history/comparison/etc. I'm glad to know that the USB interface doesn't affect latency, at least in the testing performed here. I've got a cheap USB laser mouse from GE that feels incredibly fast and responsive. And it bugs me, because I recently purchased a Logitech G703 wireless mouse, which feels sluggish in comparison. I thought that modern wireless mice were supposed to be "on par" with wired mice! Maybe I need to adjust polling rates or something...

Oddly I ran into a weird issue where a third party RDP provider called paperspace had a bug in it's native app, a ps/2 keyboard and mouse was the only instant fix as the app took out all my USB devices, assumingly a weird driver quirk. Only other thing I could do was restore win10 from a previous update. Was super glad to have kept an old pair.

I owned a 3 button mouse systems pc mouse in the mid 80's that was laser optical and used a special mouse pad. It was a serial mouse but you could buy an adapter to convert it to PS2. For its time it was probably the best mouse you could buy for things like CAD work.

Great Videoa s always Tech Yes City. That PS2 mouse you had there is a run of the mill Logitech mouse most of them would just have a sticker on the bottom that would come off after a short while. That model of mouse was never sold in a retail box it was sold as a OEM mouse that came in a plastic bag. Even back in the mid 2000's I think you could buy them new for like $12 bucks CAD but they worked pretty well for the money you spent on them.

You also need to keep in mind that the game it self can add input lag depending on how it was optimized. Non-3D games (or non FPS games) often have lower input lag since the game is just much more simple to run. Also the speed of the PC is important. I'm sure the input lag is higher on a i7 2700k Sandy Bridge, vs a i7 8700k Coffee Lake. Or even between an i3 to an i7 (i9?). There's a LOT more to input lag than just a PS/2 or USB port. Does it even matter if the mouse supports USB 1.1, 2.0, or even 3.0? What about all the iterations of the PS/2 port, if any? Also does it really matter if you plug in a PS/2 keyboard to the Purple port, what happens when you put it into the teal port meant for the mouse? Does the PC or the OS even care?

PS/2 is actually better because its got its own IRQ. As soon as you get three devices on a USB it automatically is worse from an interrupt standpoint, maybe not throughput.
@albertmas3752
@albertmas3752 6 жыл бұрын
USB doesn't use any interrupt system as we understand interrupts in computers. It is the CPU that stops for a moment to read any possible input from USB ports. A massively overloaded CPU could struggle to read USB ports enough times per second to perform well. PS/2 never has this problem. When it has some data to send it uses interrupts to force the CPU to stop ANYTHING it is doind to receive the port's data. You'll never have a PS/2 mouse/keyboard stuck because CPU is too busy.

For me the most important feature of the mouse is not the type of connector but the number of _real_ buttons. I bought what I suspect may be the world's last ever proper three button mouse (i.e. no scroll wheel) a couple of years ago. Yes, scroll wheels also double as buttons, but they don't feel anything like a real button, and they have a habit of scrolling instead of clicking at just the wrong moment. This is especially important in Linux, as middle-click to paste is standard in *nix systems. I also tend to configure the middle button to jump in fps games, and scroll wheel mice are a nightmare in that scenario.

I always felt like the way people chose peripherals back in the day before everything was branded "gaming" still holds up today. The best mouse/keyboard is the one that suits YOU well and that YOU are used to. I wonder how high up one would have to go in competitive gaming to actually have a significant advantage from changing to more costly gear. Just because it is more expensive or newer doesn't necessarily make for a better experience, just look at the hype around the IBM model M ...it's almost 35 years old.

Problem is it depeneds more on sensor and mouse firmware. One mouse can have lag on its own(inherent to implementation of reading sensor and translating to data sent to operating system or too heavy jitter correction, especially prevelent in high dpi mice) And in experience, it has nothing to do with polling or interrupt if a mouse is responsive or not. PS/2 200Hz can feel smoother in some games, compared to 125hz USB, OR the other way around depending on amount of FPS you get and how the tears then splice the screen on panning and tracking movements. Also a fire animation is not any way of testing really, since its not high priority on a pipeline of events in game. From aweful CPL "mousefix", logitech mouseware filters to doubling count on win9x in some games, its WAY more complicated, generally more down to the game processing mouse input like windows xp directinput, no framepacing, smoothing or nvidia anti-stutter bs. "lower"-dpi mouse with "low-grade" sensors that skips at higher DPI is prefered, should even skip here and there at 1000dpi seems to be a sweet spot for most responsive mice. None existant or no implementation of smoothing. But its much bigger, finding sweetspot with monitor hz, mouse hz and fps to manage the tearing to what fools your eyes the best. Resolution and "pixel skipping"-correlation with DPI matters too with perception TL;DR 2000dpi MAX sensor mouse, no firmware bullshit. 500hz USB or 200hz ps/2 depending on how you match panning tearing vary from game to game

I have no other problem with PS/2 keyboards / mice but the fact if you have do disconnect one, you need to reboot to make it work again. actually, in case of keyboards, i would actually prefer native PS/2, as the connector IMO, is "more securely connected" and using one leaves one USB free. That being said, last PS/2 MOUSE i had was some razer ball mouse i had circa 2002 and really didnt even use.

You didn't mention your polling rate with the newer mice. Did you just leave them at 124Hz or up them to 500-1000Hz? Whenever the 'Logitech Gaming Software' silently crashes on my system, I can instantly tell, as the mouse reverts to 124Hz polling and becomes both jerky and laggy. It'll only make a difference of around 6-7ms, but lag is cumulative and that 6-7ms can be the difference between a responsive and unresponsive system. I actually got my mother a gaming mouse - she's never gamed in her life - specifically because the IPS panel on her laptop is quite laggy, and a g300s performs much better than the MX Anywhere I had gotten her previously.

Should've looked into how well it resolved motion resolution.

Is there any way you could measure delay without a camera? It seems a bit lacking considering that you’re only recording at 100 fps. I know the monitor is running at 100 fps as well, but we don’t have any guarantee that that’s matched. Milliseconds are what matter here, and you’re recording a frame every 10 ms. It would just be great if you could find a way to measure delay through the system instead, for (relatively) absolute accuracy. Your video is the only video I’ve seen so far where someone has tried this, and an improved/updated review would be greatly appreciated.

Its not possible, because computer, do not know when you clicked button. But you can use cam to record screen and hear button click. But it will add input lag of monitor too.
