This is a selection of some of my personal favorite PS1 Japan imports from my collection. I tried to pick games that can be easily played without the need to know Japanese. All games are accompanied by gameplay, box art and the most commonly translated name for the game (if applicable).
I still have TONS of PS1 imports I can feature in future videos such as this one, but that will depend on the reception to this video, so if you want more be sure to watch the full video, like/comment and I will continue to make PS1 import videos.
Games featured in this video (in order of appearance):
1. Gear Fighter Dendoh
2. Odo Odo Oddity
3. Lucifer Ring
4. OH NO!
5. EGG
6. Kaze No Notam
7. Granu-Shimai Daibouken
8. Ten Made Jack

I haven't properly edited gameplay like this into my videos in many many years... it's been so long since I felt that feeling of being satisfied with all the hours put into the finished video. Could this be the start to rekindling a flame in my desire to edit videos? We'll see if it's worth it. I hope the gameplay helps in your purchasing decisions!

Absolutely wonderful to see you making videos again! Talking to a camera is good on its own, but showing game play as well is the cherry on top! I look forward to seeing more recommendations of obscure games I've never heard of, just like the good old days. Also, regarding "Ten Made Jack", the title means something like "Jack all the way to the heavens" (subtitle: "The bewildering great death climb up the bean stalk"), and the "ma" and "de" are pronounced seperately. Signed, some dude who spent four years learning japanese and feels the need to flex.

The cover art for Kaze No Notam is a beautiful piece by artist Hiroshi Nagai. I LOVE his art style! I'm not sure this piece was made just for the game but it's very similar to the one he made for Max Romeo's "Loving You" in 1983 or Naoya Matsuoka's "September Wind" also in 1983. Another 80s Japanese illustrator with a similar, but more detailed art style is Eizin Suzuki. They're the two big names when it comes to 80s LP cover art in the city pop / jazz fusion music genre. Eizin Suzuki is well known these days for the cover art he did for Tatsuro Yamashita's "For You" in 1982.

Honestly I'd love to see a video on Japanese only RPGs regardless of how much text they might have. Also good call on putting some game footage into this video. The weirder a game is the harder it is to get a clear idea of what it is based on a description alone.

KZfaq read my mind recommending me this video. I just received King’s Field 3 in the mail, my first import PS1 game, and I was thinking how I’d like to know some games I could play without knowing how to read Japanese. Thanks Pete for the first game recommendation! I adore single lane beat 'em ups (Ninja Warriors and the like) as I find a lot of the popular ones frustrating because you have to get your 'alignment' just right; which I find takes away from the pure fun you can have with just pulling off combos. The one you recommended looks like if Treasure made a single lane mech fighter instead of Guardian Heros. it looks beautiful. I will be sure to check it out.
