The PS2 Tool was a Development Kit Available Only from Sony and used to Develop PS2 Games, Being a Hybrid Machine Packing a Linux operating System and a PS2 Console Inside with Two 40gb Hard Drives it packed a Punch back in the day.
Today I Take The Lid Off This Monster and Have a Look around and see What Makes It Tick.

Both HDD’s on my TOOL sadly failed the last time I tried to use the machine. I now need to find some replacement drives and drive images to get it operational once again. Do you have any advice on suitable HDD replacements?

Compact flash worked on mine I just tried it to see what happen and it booted on the CF card with IDE adapter I got An image off obscure gamer site both drives had images available

Awesome, I love that it’s not region locked allowing you to play games from wherever… If I ever see one in the wild I’ll be secure to secure it, though they a lil pricey (kinda worth it) 🤷

That external HDD is actually a standard retail PS2 Hard Drive! But for the launch Japan PS2 model (SCPH-1X00X). -Those things didn't have expansion bays, believe it or not.- Nevermind, you showed that as well. I had forgotten the video

Sadly I've never been able to get the side panel off mine. Needs a new hardrive as it seems to have been removed.

Hard drives seem to be the weak spot of the system they die or get taken out I have ran mine on a cf card before with an image which you sometimes can find an online to use

Do they both have better performance or is it just the XXL Dev Kit? i heard about the dev kits having more RAM and faster clock speed.

Hi From what I gather it’s a Linux pc with a PS2 bolted on and you can transfer and do stuff from the internal pc to the PS2 and run demos and code straight from the PC which is cool so more features than a standard dev kit

X4 ram for both CPUs, it's the only way of having relatively decent debugging on real hardware and the boot ROM is reprogramable

It's odd the devkits for the most popular console ever are super rare w pratically no documentation on the web. I wonder if the bios could ever surface.

I think most of the agreements when using the tools were to return it to there supplier when finished and destroyed It’s only a few that went bankrupt that did not follow the rules I think and they escaped into the wild But having said that mine is from EA

It’s nearly impossible to find these separate I was going to make them out of wood and paint them on a system I was going to buy before this one

If yours boots to ps2 ok I would recommend making a backup as the HDD are dying

With the drives removed you will need to connect the drive to your pc and use a program like raw hdd copy and create an image of the drive on your pc I would also upload the image to a cloud or other for others to use if there’s go down too

@@TheVetUk ok but i neet first to get an IDE adapter because i dont have.any possibility to see whats data inside this 2 drive?mayne some demo or unreleased game. I only know that my unit come from the sony UK studios in london.
