Grinding noise on PlayStation PS2 can be creepy and can scare you but the way to overcome the issue is simple, it is explained and fixed in minutes.
Some grease - or a WD40 drop - on the shaft always helps, keep this in mind especially if you find out that the shaft and the teeth are dried out over the years.
The next thing to do - ONLY - if the disk cannot be read, is to go ahead and adjust the laser lens voltages as shown in the link below:
SLIM Models:
• PS2 Essentials: Laser ...
FAT Models:
• PlayStation 2 FAT. Che...
If this last attempt cannot make it work, the laser lens mechanism should be replaced.

Worked perfectly! Thanks!! Although, my fat model didn't have a metal clip under the white plastic part, it was just built in plastic nubs. They were caked with dust and stuff. Cleaned it up, it's running beautifully!

Silicon oil/grease must also be applied on the rotor-shaft, that would do movement super extra easier.

No need to remove both top screws in the PS2 fat. Just the top right one on the motor side, you can then lift that side, slide out the bar and the laser lifts off of the left hand bar.

When I opened my ps2 slim up because I had the same problem I figured out my laser lens pickup ribbon was the issue could that also be the reason why my ps2 makes that grinding noise when I put in a disc? because everything else was okay.

Just got a used ps2 and it’s making this grinding noise, mostly during FMVs but during gameplay not as frequently. Should I start with this fix? What kind of grease should I add to the rotor?
@CyberhugTechnologies
@CyberhugTechnologies 2 жыл бұрын
It is "White Lithium Grease" what is applied by factory and most service professionals. I think silicon based products would do as well. Now, about the noise... I think you can check if this is the case for you - grinding i mean - applying fresh grease is always a good practice so, you won't be opening the console for checking only. Hi, I just got a PS2 FAT SCPH-39004 and the fan is very noisy (like all PS2). Do you know any replacement SILENT FAN alternative? (not external FAN mod that impact on the design of the Console..)
@CyberhugTechnologies
@CyberhugTechnologies 2 жыл бұрын
Ciao Massimo, never changed one with an after market, better and more silent one for the PS2 - But - I have done this for amplifiers and other systems - laptops as well - and the principle for me was simple, find the right size, dimensions for the new one, check several samples in the local radio shack and just pick the most expensive one :-) hope this simple approach helps! I have some sound skipping issues when im playing on my ps2 slim do you know why ?
@CyberhugTechnologies
@CyberhugTechnologies 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry for delay - the laser skipping is an indication of an ageing laser beam, not able to read data on first try so, it tries again and again. You can try adjusting the voltage of the laser to make it work for a longer period without problems but only when the time comes to stop reading completely. i have a special video for this prepared: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oa-bacdh3KrHdXU.html

My laser keeps clicking, even after I replaced it, it still gives me a disc read error and loud clicking sounds. I adjusted the laser assembly with the white gear in the back but it still doesn’t read it. I unplugged the cable and tried to see if I missed any solder then plugged it back in and my game finally loaded, but then it wouldn’t get past the loading screen. I’ve tried everything and I’m just thinking I need to replace the entire laser/disc assembly
@CyberhugTechnologies
@CyberhugTechnologies Жыл бұрын
Hi Fred, the second video for the weird sounds will be out soon. It sounds like the laser cannot go "alll the way down" as it should! The beginning of reading the disc is from far bottom and after that section it goes in the middle and finally all the way up. So, i would say check please the ability of the shaft to drive the laser "all the way down", if it does not then a switch at the bottom is not pressed therefore the grinding!
@freddurst5277
@freddurst5277 Жыл бұрын
@@CyberhugTechnologies it’s not really a grinding sound, it’s the laser clicking because it can’t read the data on the disc. That’s what’s leading me to believe that it’s the assembly itself that is messed up or misaligned. Because I literally bought a new laser and it’s having the same problem. It makes the same rhythmic clicking sound over and over till it gives me a disc read error. It worked for CDs for a little but now it won’t work for CDs or PS2/DVD discs. I adjusted the potentiometer after having some problems so I’ll put it back to factory settings to be sure
@CyberhugTechnologies
@CyberhugTechnologies Жыл бұрын
@@freddurst5277 Hmmm... misalignment can affect even the new one, this is correct. OK, are you sure the side barrels that the mechanism rolls on and the motor shaft itself are oiled up a little ? and screwed tight? Put some grease to make it slip well before anything else mate on all moving part! Weird sounds usually come from dried parts with friction happening between them!
@freddurst5277
@freddurst5277 Жыл бұрын
@@CyberhugTechnologies They’re all oiled up, and the laser can move fine but it’s the actual tracks that I think are messed up. The model I have doesn’t use screws to keep the side barrels in place, it’s this thin metal plate, and it’s supposed to push down these 2 white plastic gears that can raise/lower the side barrels and are adjustable. It’s the SCPH-50001 model (definitely the most annoying one to work with). I’m hoping that replacing the laser assembly can fix the problem but if not then I’m just not sure what the issue could be

I need help with my PS2 slim please. My PS2 fell to the ground a few months ago. Now the lid won't pop up whenever I press the eject button and I have to open it by myself because I lost those springy things for the lid and lens would move up whenever it boots up my game and stays that position, making the ribbon scratch my discs. I put a piece of plastic behind the lens using hot glue to prevent the ribbon from scratching my discs. When it boots up my game, I start to notice loud clicking sounds coming from my ps2. It was my lens trying to move up, but the piece of plastic I put there is blocking it, making a clicking noise. The only game I could play is GOW 2. The only problem is that whenever I load my save file, the lens would slightly move up. Any way to fix it?
@CyberhugTechnologies
@CyberhugTechnologies 3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't put hot glue for any reason - now, the lens trip is limited and not right at all - get a new ribbon and detach carefully the old one. Switch under the lid can be permanently closed using some blu tac - it is alright. Thanks for watching!

@@CyberhugTechnologies Hi, this is months after I watched your video. Thanks for reading my comments! A month after, there's an even louder sound coming from my PS2! I began dismantling it and found out that the ribbon broke. (just one tiny strip on the ribbon, on its root, near the connector) The grinding sound that we've been hearing, is actually the motor and the spinning tray, searching for what track it should read, not because of disc hitting the ribbon. (if it's disc hitting ribbon, then picture a bow sliding on a violin string kinda sound!) I laid the PS2 dismantled, while waiting for a replacement ribbon, lubed the motors, and gear with white lithium grease, then put everything back when the ribbon arrived. The thing still purred, I still need to bend the ribbon if I don't play for a long time, but this thing seemed running too fast now. (load time is normal, though, but it's been giving the best it could.) I hope I could play it for 5 to 10 years more; Wish it still kicked side by side with PS5 even if there's a new PS6 on sale!
