In this video I give my thoughts and personal expereinces in HDD loading on the PS2. NOTE THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL!
I also realise that not everyone will experience the issues I have noted, but I thought that they were worth mentioning in any case, but I would love to hear about your experiences and how you get on with HDD Loading!

You don't even need to use a screwdriver to mount the adaptor to the PS2. The manual says "Turn the mounting screws in a clockwise direction using a coin."

I hope you realize you helped me so much, I have an old ps2 and got the expansion card with it, so you’ve taught me how to mod my ps2 without needing to buy a new memory card

just one minor point - apparently the ATA controller can actually support up to 133mbps, not only the default (and officially used) ATA-66. This is possibly of benefit if using newer versions of OPL with support for these faster modes.

It works great for me. The only difficulty was getting the game covers and synopsis to work on OPL. THAT was a real effort. But it is operating now. The Xbox was a breeze compared to PS2. I use FMCboot but I know you can get it to boot from the hard drive directly. I have a 1TB IDE in my fat PS2 and I put it into a clear case.

Dude, I did all this shit with a 1TB HDD that I got completely full with games and it was absolutely worth it, now 8 year old me can be happy as fuck

My Opl is slow and doesnt always let me back out. Is that normal? I dont want to buy another hard drive just to have the same problem.

Great review video, me personally I use SMB and it works great. If I ever need to take my PS2 anywhere, I can detach the sd card from my smb server and pop it in an MX4SIO and pick up right where I left off.

Have you tried out VASH’s hdd odd image, you can then run in a completely stock looking environment. I had my old phat like this, and am trying to do the IDE mod on my 70xxx slim to re-enable IDE and get it working there.

Its not really worth it. Since any 50 dollar cpu can 100% emulate it at 720 p scale

@Marcos Garcia I used to think the same but theres much less hassle in having dedicated items like this to play games with than it is to worry are my emulators going to work. Totally a personal preference however and I dont think its a bad move

@@8bitsinthebasement its not in the ps2 I have my modded ps2 and I just play it because it's more confortable to play in the bed. Buy emulation is just way too perfect nowadays. My PC can play a much more stable ps2 than my very own ps2 lol

Would you consider doing a fresh, step-by-step, from scratch video guide on how to install all this and the extra information needed to use SSD's? Other videos seem to rush through and you seem very thorough?

The problem is with those is they go out of date usually quite quickly and then you have incorrect information around. If you just want to play games, its probably worth looking how to setup the exfat version of OPL

I've formatted the HDD with HD Loader, but when I connect the drive to my PC, the drive is treated like an unformatted drive and Windows wants me to initialise it. How can I make the PC see the drive so that I can put ISOs on it?

You cant, when using APA you have to use bespoke tools. However you will probably enjoy exFAT as its newer and much easier! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrCgq6SA0beldqM.html

Does anyone have any experience playing The Simpsons Road Rage via OPL? Every game so far, I've been able to get settings that make them playable, but this one always seems to freeze on me when picking someone up no matter what settings I used.

I'm using opl with a slim PS2 and an old PS4 hard drive attached via the USB ports. All games work fine for me including Simpsons road rage.

The problem is whichever OPL you use. There are one just loader out there, that is up to the task. And No, it's not USB Advance.

hey, i've got the chinese version of this hdd adapter. Some games dont work properly (Out Run 2006 for exammple, the in game music while racing doesn't play) IF I MOD A ORIGINAL IDE ADAPTER adding a Sata conector , those problems should vanish right??

The adaptor doesn’t convert anything, just exposes the ps2’s existing IDE. It could be a drive incompatibility but you can certainly try a Sony adaptor

i agree 100 percent. matches my experience, compared to modding all the other consoles. i thought xbox was tricky but i've been messing with ps2 homebrew solutions since the beggining and its changed so much, there are so many options, different methods, different apps, app specific scenarios, compatability issues etc, its a mess. things do get better, but theres alot of outdated solutions out there which all work if done correctly, offering different results. there needs to be some recap videos of the different options, and covering the latest greatest methods which are still evolving - exfat drives, ditching winhiip and hdldump, or ms4sio. going the old way provides the ability to use pops, but the newest quickest solution doesnt come with this feature but transfering games is much simpler. using the premade freemcboot memcard images helps, understanding which opl, and ulaunch for whatever task you need helps too.

Just wanted to say that this was a great video! Yes, I know there is a new one pertaining to exFat but this one I found first. I am at the starting point on modding my FAT PS2 with a 1TB SSD and looking at all the videos. Very well done and I am off to watch the newer one!

I know this is not a tutorial but I still want to ask some questions, been looking around, but I am pretty bad at searching online for stuff so haven't found any clear cut answers. Can you have multiple versions of Open Playstation Loader installed on the Playstation 2 at the same time and if so any idea how? Some games just do not function properly unless you use a specific version. For example one of my favorite PS2 games, Rogue Galaxy, has busted audio unless you're using version 0.9.1. But I don't want to be constantly be installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc different versions of OPL to get specific games working, I'd rather just have them all on there at the same time and pulling from the same list of games. Can you partition a section of the Hard Drive so it would be read by the PS2 like the official drive, shows up in the system browser with all the features the official drive has, while the rest of the storage space is used for Free MC/HD Boot and OPL?

Yes you can have multiple versions of OPL installed but you need to play around with file paths to do this. Also on your menu you’d need to make a menu entry for both. As for the partitions, there is no difference. The APA filesystem is not like computer HDD partitions as each game and program is effectively a new partition and thus HDDOSD and FreeMCBoot operate in the same area. A stock HDDOSD wont see any hard disk however as you need certain preparations for it to be recognised and you might need an official Sony drive as it will be expecting features on those drives which are not on standard IDE drives. I should say, I could be wrong about specifics but in general getting HDDOSD to recognise the drive doesnt mean you cant use it for OPL. Altough you cannot use APA with a ExFAT partition as APA does not use either MBR or GPT so computers wont understand it without formatting the partition layout

@@NaokisRC I'm afraid I don't really know enough about file paths to play around and figure this out. I'm just smart enough to follow instructions, not know how or why they work the way they do. Every guide I can find for OPL, be it written or a video here on KZfaq, does not even mention you can have multiple versions installed. Would a video going over how to do that be possible please? I actually do have an official PS2 HDD, it was my main place to store save files for years, but I don't want to be constantly switching physical drives just to move saves with my single memory card, which is now mainly taken up by Free McBoot files, so I can only save a small handful of games before it's filled up. I know OPL has Virtual Memory Cards but every attempt I've made to set one of those up just results in an error regardless of what guide I'm following. I've checked compatibility lists and the games I try this with are said to be fully compatible, so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong there.

The hard drive bay was also supposed to be used for games that need an update with online games and there was a browser 2.0 update at some point that would add a hdd icon to the browser where your memory cards are displayed soo it could theoretically be used as a giant memory card also a good pc software for managing games and hard drive is pfs batchkit manager it lets you convert/decomcpress ps1 games lets you compress games to zso format it even supports zip extracting soo you can zip up all your games soo you can fit more on your pc to do a big install of them all it also creates elf files for ps1 games for opl app tab and has a server thing i never used it as i have gamestar adapter only issue is you cant use it to delete games and renaming seems to be buggy but if you rename before hand or use its built in use name from database its fine you can just delete games from launch elf's hdd manager in the misc section and you can rename them there too and sorry for lack of punctation its a mouthfull to read i failed english at school lol.

I switched to ssd. I like the lightweight of it. Modded ps2 is goat. Gitaroo man doesn't get passed the tutorial tho 😢

I used FMCB and HDDOSD for my PS2. I transferred the games with a usb to sata adapter. Edit: I also use PCSX2 on my portable gaming PC.

8:56 mine gets 6mb per second when I use port 1 on my router, however it drops to the same slow speeds as your video if I use ports 2 3 or 4, maybe you should look into that. I mean 6mbps is still slow but its much more bearable.

100% in agreement. I'll go as far as saying PS2 modding and homebrew use is the most cumbersome and pain in the arse of any console I've ever worked with - which at this point is all of them.

This wasn’t using an OSSC, the Dell P2422H screens accept YPrPb 15khz signals natively.Altough that said I think I later used a retrotink to HDMI to be a bit more reliable!

@@NaokisRC it's data transfer speed is a lot faster than what I saw in this video and is a portable option for what you want to do for your ps2. Also have you watched tutorials for hard drive mod such as macho nachos?

Its an option but not sure its much easier. HDD, once set up mind, is a lot more convenient as it can store a lot of game’s relatively cheaply

well using winhiip is not bad l use a sata to usb connector and just drag and drop and l have no issues still no problem besides l loaded all teh games l needed on a 3TB drive so l dont have to keep removing the drive to add or remove games maybe get a bigger drive so you dont have to take it out al the time

I think you missed the bit where I said they dont exist for mac os, which complicates stuff lol. Besides, I fixed the issues in my later video by using ExFAT now. As for removing the drive, I only put on what I want at the time, not load it with tons of software I will never play, but I might get new games or want to try things. Plus until I learnt of ExFAT being a new thing, the fact it was only out of date or sometimes annoying software made the PS2 tools feel not as polished like the Wii or Xbox

@@NaokisRCwas just going to mention this. PS2 isos are now just drag and drop, plus there's no limitation on how big a hard drive you can use.

@davidgill7412 Are there any compatibility issues with any of the PS2 games? I had issues getting Death Jam Fight for NY working on older models of opl.

@@user-in1gv1uh2v It's still OPL at heart. It has the same issues as the standard build. You should be able to look at compatibility guide for OPL and see the best configuration for your game. That being said, I understand your frustration. Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front is still glitched all to heck when running it through OPL. That one I have to run through HD Loader, but with my hard drive formatted in exFAT that's not happening.

@davidgill7412 I recall even switching up modes to the compatibility list configuration. I still had issues. With the improvements with the drag and drop system I hope to see the entire PS2 library to be compatible.

I'm jealous of ps2 fat owners. I have a slim and whenever i go to someone's house i have to bring a laptop and network cables just to play backups.

You can also use USB hard drives but Im guessing you have tried this?

@@NaokisRC hmmm, not really a good way to play though. Especially if vms lag and load times are increased. The only other option with SMB is to buy a mini router to use instead of my laptop.
