Since Sony first enabled the SSD upgrade slot of the PS5 last week, there has been a remarkably mixed reaction to how Sony has handled the whole feature on their latest generation console. From the fact that upgrading the internal storage was disabled on day one, to how they have presented its eventual activation in the PS5 system software 2.0-04.00.00 beta, many have questioned that the upgrade choices, method, flexibility and hands-on work required by the end-user when upgrading their PS5 with an additional m.2 NVMe SSD is overly complex and unnecessarily over the top.

FYI, A lot of people have had major issues with their SSD getting WAY too hot or flat out overheating and stop working when they opted to not put the cover back on the SSD expansion bay in the PS5. From what I understand, the PS5 was designed with the intention of keeping that cover ON for optimal airflow to cool the SSD. So I'd play it safe for now and only use heatsinks that fit in the bay with the little steel cover on. It would be one thing if a ps5 was easily replaced.. but we all know that ain't the case..

In your description the ssd Wd black Sn850 has no dissipator so is it compatible with the ps5?

Those one is not fast enough. It only has a read spread of around 5000.

I want to tell you that the Sabrent Rocket you've linked to isn't within the specs that's advised by Sony. They specify the minimum required read speed at 5500MBytes/s. FWIW The Sabrent Rocket _4 Plus_ seems to be fine. I got myself a WD_Black SN850 without the heatsink. I've added a (single-sided) heatsink from ICY-BOX IB-M2HS-70 on top of it. The heatsink is actually two millimetres too tall to put the cover back on. Which is even better considering the added benefit of some proper airflow.

Also just a pro tip. I installed my heat sink abit too low (nearer the contacts) so the metal cover of the PS5 didn’t fit. I shuffled the heat sink further up towards the screw-end and now the covers fits again 😅

What ps5 players don't understand is ps5 o/s games/ speed /loading time etc are base on the internal ssd speed 5.5 gb/sec unless sony release a software update in the future that's allow o/s games/ hardware to take advantage of that extra speed ssd

@@hugodouglas5191 I have an external Samsung SSD which works great and saves a bunch of time downloading games. You can't play PS5 games from an external drive so you can keep them externally and transfer them when you want to play them which is much faster than downloading them each time and can play PS4 games straight from there with no need to transfer.

Let me know how it operates. If you notice any apparent discrepancies between the original ps5 SSD and the extension. I think the difference will only be noticeable analytically but not to our eyes. Idk yet tho

The best thing about this version of heatsink is that it fits the PS% Digital. Other more well known and twice the price heatsinks DO NOT fit the PS5 digital. Thanks for the video because the instructions I had got with mine were way off and this video got me back on track.

Isn't there an issue with that bigger heatsink that the SSD connector goes to high up so it won't hit it where it is in the PS5?

You say you would prefer to use a larger heat sink. If you use the lager heat sink where is the air flow from? If you put the lid back on a use a smaller heat sink is there much air flow from inside the casing? All about airflow. Which is best?

The cover should be on as it channels airflow over the heatsink. You’ll have worse temps and potential throttling by using a large heatsink without the cover vs a smaller one with.

Really? I saw a product on amazon that was an alternative cover that had small openings for improved airflow. They are marketing on the fact that the issued cover that comes with the PS5 are not at all beneficial for airlow. But I'm bery curious why you mean otherwise. Could you are to explain?

@@RoaringPhilosopher - It’s according to Sony. I’ve seen a few tests to compare but I think they had the plastic shell off while testing. I believe Sonys is based on the fact of how air is draw in and funneled through the PS5. The cover likely closes that channel forcing some air over the drive.

@@beatsandmel0dy it’s pretty basic in air flow. There needs to be some closed off space in order to create a “flow” in the first place. It’s why opening the side of a pc doesn’t actually help bring the cpu temps down. In theory it would make the fans not work as good, since they are supposed to be cooling something specific.

Nope. You should leave it on. It has zero impact on modern NVMe SSD heat dissipation and in some cases it can invalidate your warranty

With the way Sony designed the ps5 I’m 90% sure that you’re suppose to put that ssd cover back on, I’m pretty sure Sony released a video awhile back saying that was important so no dust gets in there.

I don't think there's any difference really. If you buy the SN 850 with a heatsink pre-installed just skip the first half of the video. If you buy one without a heatsink you can copy all of the steps to install a heatsink yourself from this video.

I had to press down ever so slightly on the expansion cover to close and screw it in... Will that cause any issue? The heat sink I used had the instructions of placing the thermal pads on both sides, where as you just did it top side against the fins part. Regardless I got it installed and working, and I thank you for that... got the Seagate Firecuda 530 4TB, cost a fair bit so was kinda stressful thinking I messed up.
