Awesome to see you back. Glad l got my Series X because l can use both my 5TB Hard Drive and the 1TB external card via plug and play. I feel that Sony were totally not ready for next gen because they were in a hurry to get the PS5 released. I still plan to get a PS5 but it maybe around midgen. It seems that the PS5 Hype Train lead owners to limited storage and possible future overheating issues. What a complete mess. Anyways, welcome back Champ!!!!

Another thing i noticed when remove the fan. Both size of this fan are not designed to push air. Only one side have the deep flints.and also the way air circulate inside the console. They expect air to turn 90 degrees to the back. This is the main reason heat will accumulate inside the console.

I’ve learned by experience to not get tempted in buying a brand new system console until I see the issues months later....

I've never had storage issues. I have no problem deleting a game for another. How many games do you play at once? I have a handful of games I play at a time. Something in that handful will get old at some point. Something new comes along, I replace said "old" game with new game. Then you've got the fact that I downloaded Demon's Souls the other day in under 10 min. I was playing the game within 15 min of purchase....

Are people playing more than 5 games at once? I have a couple of multiplayer games and I only play one story game at a time. So I’m doing fine. And we can’t just assume there are gonna be problems when we didn’t try out the feature yet. I mean hopefully Sony gave us that option knowing that it’s gonna work.

The nvme slot is in the air flow , get a grip the fan doesn’t have to speed up much to cover this area of the case..........

Actually regarding the ps5 ssd. Because of the fact that the ssd is so special it makes a particular size game able to be much more compressed so that it takes up less space than it does on past generations so the 667 gb is actually more like 1tb of storage

Think i rather wait for that ps5 slim or pro model whenever that drops

This literally makes no sense because my gaming laptop had two drives that are two M.2 drives and reach about 3.3 gigabytes of read and 2.9 gigabytes write while not getting too hot the fan isn't even connected it's just a simple copper heatsink a flat one so the size of a credit card meaning it shouldn't get hot at all

The fact they haven't unlocked this feature yet shows they are having massive trouble with this design over sight!!!! Revamped ps5 is needed sooner rather than later I'd expect a new model Xmas 2022

I know there’s WD drives with heat sinks, so that could help with the heat and then the fan wouldn’t have to stress to dissipate the heat terribly fast. Also good to see you back Champ, been watching you little over a year since you’re a fellow Aussie and you cover PlayStation news!

You should cover some ps5 controllers breaking, adaptive triggers, sticks etc. my r2 spring broke and even the slightest touch registers as pressed (the adaptiveness still works)

The other thing Xbox allows is for you to move games into and out of the SSD storage so onto an external disk drive you don’t have to download stuff over again. Why are Sony being so poor with this stuff?

667gb seems OK if you look at how Sony is using Kraken and with games like village and control having near to half the install size of Xbox and pc. That hardware decompression in the custom chip is starting to show why it's a great design choice. Also Sony already addressed this issue with the tech reveal from 10 months ago. There's no way I can see that happening they wouldn't add the slot as an option if the console had overheating problems and they they would have done hours, weeks, months of testing to see how well it preforms.

Haven't had an issue yet and I've played on it for over 12 hours in a single day seems like it's a unit by unit basis meaning some don't have the issue lol

Wonder if thermal paste or liquid metal would help

Hmmm, still not what I was hoping for. Just got my ps5 a couple days ago and it keeps saying it's overheating but ONLY when I try to play PS5 games. All my ps4 games work fine, same with youtube and Netflix etc.

I don't disagree with regards to the hard drive size being a point of concern or the potential for an external to run hot on the system, we'll have to see though it's implied as a potential concern, maybe they'll figure something out. But to offer a counter point to the space, you know that the Kraken compression that is built into PS5 has been showing it's results early into the PS5 life cycle. Games like Control and the upcoming RE:Village are both using almost half the space on PS5 as they would be on the Xbox equivalent. I think it's pretty promising that this sort of compression is being utilized this early and it will facilitate the optimization of drive space.

The WD SN850 is fast Enough according To Press Start Aus

Unless they specifically integrate some form of real time communication of the M.2 drive temps to the PS5 (which COULD be done when the drive is converted to PS5 expandable storage, but probably won't be) then it won't make a difference as the system won't know. This would also reduce its performance as bandwidth would be allocated for this communication. Also M.2 NVMes are able to cope with higher temps anyway. The common misconception some will undoubtedly end up having is that it's better to not put the metal plate on after, but thats key to guiding the air from the intake fins at the front of the console, to the fan. Itll make no more noise with or without expandable storage installed

standard m.2 drives do not require any cooling. the super fast pcie 4.0 will require maybe just a little cooling so its controller won't throttle. but compared to the rest of the system it's basically nothing. your concerns are totally out of proportion

I prefer external storage connecting via USB. I don't want to take chance opening up my console and replace SSD internally. I could possibly damage the console especially since it's new console. Hope Sony could mage to resolve this.

I want to make this clear that while 667 gb might not be much in numbers but ps5 has a data compression that's quite amazing. For example it has less space than xbox series x but it's games also take less space. Control Ultimate Edition on PS5 takes 25 gb of space while on XSX it's 44-46 gbs. Rainbow Six Siege with 4K texture pack takes 42 gb of space on PS5 while on PS4 without 4K texture pack it's 70 gb+. They basically cut the storage a little but to compensate they used oodle kraken data compression which also cut the game's sizes almost in half. Not all devs utilized this but some third parties did and you bet your ass first party titles will too. Both Miles Morales and Remastered and a few other cross gen titles are smaller on PS5 over PS4 and XSx

Sony did want it to be a *HOT* seller.

I have to disagree with the point about the fan and the extended SSD. I have a gen 4 ps5 spec SSD in my PC, the bay doesn't have a fan on it or open space. Under load it tops out at around 50°c even if the io throughput generates more heat, there's no way it would any higher then 60° which is completely safe.
