They pair with balloons, and balloons have better acceleration than wings and a similar air time when combined. At the cost of gliding which is only ever used to explore the higher parts of the world. Up until the jetpack or the hoverboard, the balloon bundle is a decent replacement for wings.

in my last playthrough i actually used the horseshoe bundle instead of wings. it was super fun, especially paired with the queen slime mount, would recommend :)
