As I reflect on David’s specific prayer request in Psalm 5:1-3, there are words that describe the psalmist’s urgency, such as “Listen…, consider…, Pay attention…my cry,…I plead.” While we don’t have to plead with God-since the Lord Jesus Christ is our great high priest, and we can enter God’s presence at any moment-there is something to be said about praying with fervency. Our prayers are often either rote or ‘milktoast,’ lacking intention and spiritual ‘umph.’ David’s prayers show how he knew to be honest with God, sometimes even wrestled with Him, and David wouldn’t let go until he got the blessing. We can share our deepest thoughts and needs with the Lord, but I wonder how many of us do…or do we just think that because God knows them, we shouldn’t have to. Thanks for the teaching, Dr. G.

Because the Lord Jesus Christ is our great high priest, we are to enter God’s presence at any moment in order to share our deepest thoughts and needs. I think this statement is a powerful reminder that we do not have to face life’s challenges alone. We have a loving Father that will listen to everything we feel because of Jesus. David also reminds us in Psalms 5:1-3 that we can speak it all out, unedited to our loving Abba Father. He implores God to listen to His words, to hear his sighs. He asks God to pay attention to the sound of his cry. In other words, God, hear my heart. He reminds himself that he is talking to God and that He is his king, the One he is praying to. Finally, he shares that he is praying at daybreak, before he does anything else. He then tells God he is pleading his case to Him and He is waiting, watching for His answer with expectation. This is one of my favorite Psalms. I especially love the Message version of this Psalm. “Listen, God! Please, pay attention! Can you make sense of these ramblings, my groans and cries? King-God, I need your help. Every morning you’ll hear me at it again. Every morning I lay out the pieces of my life on your altar and watch for fire to descend.” (Psalm 5:1-3 MSG) You can hear David’s desperation as he calls out to God. He knows he’s rambling, saying everything he is feeling and when words won’t do so he just groans. He knows that only God can help him. There is nothing more he can do so he lays out his life before God, on the altar, which represents surrender, submission to God. In other words, God, if you don’t do this it won’t get done. Not only does he surrender, submit, his life to God, he does it with an expectation that God is going to show up! Be Encouraged!
