Most subwoofers target the home theater marketplace rather than 2-channel audio. So, what makes a subwoofer work best in one environment or another? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/
I am getting close to publishing my memoir! It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.

I read somewhere once... "if you can make your subwoofer sound good with music, it'll sound good with movies" - and that's the philosophy I've been trying to follow with my setup. Only problem is the constant tweaking to try and eek out that last little bit of 20hz performance. You audio folks all know how that can go:D

First easy example I can think of to demonstrate to someone why a subwoofer helps a system sound real, is one second into track two on the studio album "Wilco" entitled "Deeper Down." Someone adjusting their sheet music maybe, idk but it makes for a good, quickly accessible demo for a music sub anyway.

To better answer the question; I would like to know more about the woofer drivers in the video - driver efficiency, cone material, fs, ported/ sealed, power rating.. This would help me better deduce more of designers technical choices.. large surface area ( which I advocate ) is obviously the biggest design approach...

Craziest experiment ive done with subwoofers. This worked well for my room. I put a pair of subwoofers on as solid of a foundation that I could make. Closer torwds the ceiling , not touching. Still need to have room for them to breathe. Rather than the floor. I couldn't believe the difference that it made. It was almost as if the bass was channeled torwds the ceiling when I had them placed on the floor. Away from the listening area. But when I placed them torwds the ceiling. The bass filled the room better at the istening area. It really made the bass fill the entire room evenly without any boomy zones and without any dead zones. It was great. This is without any kind of room treatment! Just different placement. Really got me thinking. What if we have floor standing speakers backwards. Usually its a tweeter at ear level in the seated position. Then midrange and woofer going down torwds the floor. But what if we still kept the tweeter at the seated ear level position. Then put the midrange and woofer going up torwds the ceiling? Of course it would require some kind of stand to keep the tweeter ear level. Maybe my next experiment. Who would have thought how much of a difference in sound. Just by flipping your speakers upside down 🤔

I consider REL the musical subwoofer of choice. My Stadium III has served me well for 19 years. Unfortunately it is in the shop for repair the last 3 months as the audio guys try to figure out why it is making a popping noise. Capacitors replaced and still doing it. REL no longer services or provides parts for it. But hopefully I will get it fixed and all will be well with life again!

In my experience, subs are used in home theaters to provide the chest thumping slam of explosions, etc. The cost is determined by the room size and the desired volume level. In music systems, I think pitch is the main priority, and when things goes down below 50-60 hz, that's a real challenge. REL subs, to my ears, do this best. Muddy sounding strings or pipe organs separate average systems from a true listening experience. Of course, room shape and speaker placement make a world of difference too.

Should I be looking for something rated around 20hz -3db point as I'm not sure if the rel will give that full range experience. The rel subs that go lower than this are beyond my budget unfortunately. Any guidance appreciated.

(Asjley Bloor) If you make a crossover for a speaker then a crossover coil or capacitor in series had -3db at the crossover frequency if I remember correctly. -6db is a lot. In many cases, there is the crossover inside a sub speaker that is not so good! Also amplifier that is not powerful enough

2 points, 1) Talk to recording / mix engineers and see how often they put a HPF in the channel strip or the recording mic, and be surprised on how 'high' the frequency of the HPF was set. 2) As our brain has the capability to make up the 'missing bass' by higher harmonics, that's the trick that most of the 'bass maximiser' outboard does to boost the higher harmonics (something like >100Hz), and you get the feeling of a fatter bass.

it depends on your sub, most good subs accept an input from a dedicated subwoofer out plug on a receiver & also accept signals from the output jacks of your main amplifier, you will need to wire normal speaker wires piggy backed off your main amplifiers speaker output jacks to the speaker level in jacks of your subwoofer. If you want pure musical low frequency sounds then the sealed enclosure is probably best ... but to get a decent SPL from this enclosure it's best to use multiple drivers.. even better if the drivers are paired . By this I mean mounting the drivers back to back, thus allowing the reactionary forces of the drivers to balance out .Just how many of these pairs are required is up to the appetite of the listener ..!

This is called an isobarik speaker setup, and what it essentially does is simulate a twice as stiff speaker with a twice as heavy cone, so halves the vas of the driver, making it more suitable in a smaller enclosure, at the trade-off of efficiency. The theory is the rear driver is squeezing a small volume of air, though at the same time reducing pressure behind the first driver, so it moves more freely. Linn make Isobarik speakers, I have a pair, go down low distortion free, to about 35Hz for a pair of 8's. Just image search isobarik speaker and you'll get the idea

a musical subwoofer is just a quality subwoofer, basically have less muddy and boomy sound. example: sealed box is dry, clean and goes low. ported hase phase issues, slow with sometime bumps in response and big drop off below port tuning. next ting is cabinet resonance and strength. don't want a box to flex and give energy into the room. im pretty sure the cone has to be stiff and light. not many manufacturer of woofers make subwoofer cones of this, morel has a 12" woofer at 110grams i think. i think that svs uses heavy cone woofer so that's why they're sealed boxes are not the best subwoofers. and at last how low will it go, got to have some dsp/eq in the subwoofer, servos is one example. flat to 20hz is a nice goal to reach, but at least have some output at 16hz so you can get the most out of any content you listen to.

So I have a subwoofer story...as a pretext my listening room is 25 feet by 15 feet with 10 feet ceilings so I'd say it is a reasonable size and it is for all intents and purposes an oblong shape. My listening equipment is what I'd consider premium cheapskate level. I spent about USD$1500 on it and for the EDM, 80's, 90's, rock and pop I listen to it does the job excellently to my ears. I went with a Dali subwoofer, I tried several REL models with the speakers I have (Q acoustics 3020) and they didn't sound as fast as the Dali to me. I ended up getting the 9 inch Dali E9-F that supposedly only goes down to 35hz but I have measured it at -2db at 26hz and I have not heard any of my music that makes it roll off. I tried their 12 inch model the E12-F but it seemed a tad slow to respond. The E9-F just seems more rhythmical to my ears and only needs to be on about 1/4 of it's maximum volume level and I cross it over at about 90hz (the 3020's bass is pretty weak to be honest but that might be my amp under-powering them) So to a point: I disagree that "any" good sub will do. I find the larger ones are better for home cinema as they are great for rumbles but not so much for the taught musical notes needed for my ears.

That sub goes well with those speakers because it's a small sub made to accompany small bookshelf speakers. If you had big floorstanders then that sub would not fit, it would either not be useful at all or bloat certain midbass frequencies. If your speakers would have 6.5 or 8" woofers then definitely you would have needed a sub with 10 or preferably 12" driver.

@@soring5880 I think you have hit the nail on the head there sir. FYI, they generally pair it for home cinema with Dali floorstanders but they only tend to have 6-8 inch mid-bass drivers. The "tightness" and accuracy of the subwoofer is what is important to me for music. It seems like popular opinion is that a sealed sub will do this better, but there are "good" ported subwoofers that are tight and accurate. My experience lies with 2 different 12" subwoofers, a $300 BIC Acoustec PL-200 and a $539 HSU VTF-2 MK-5. If I knew what the HSU could do prior to buying the PL-200, I would never have wasted my money on it. The PL-200 is merely a "rumble box" and the company has terrible Warranty support. I moved the PL-200 to my Stereo integrated amp with ELAC Debut 2.0 B6 Bookshelves and I just turn the Subwoofer completely off because all it does is muddy up my sound (even for movies). The HSU VTF-2 on the other hand kicks major @$$ in every way! Low frequency down to 18Hz and is extremely musical and accurate. You can also tune it to your desired result/sound. VTF stands for Variable Tuning that makes it possible to run completely sealed, one port open or two ports open. It also has a Q adjustment that allows you to adjust the tightness. It probably equates to owning 5 different subwoofers in one for all of the different settings you can make. I ended up settling on both ports open in favor of high impact effects for movies and it still sounds great for music. They say you get the lowest frequency extension with 1 port open. Can't recommend HSU enough. For my ELAC bookshelves I want to get an SVS sealed Subwoofer for it's compact size and what I understand to be musical tightness and a 45 day trial period in your home. Probably just the cheaper SB-1000, or maybe SB-2000.

Interestingly, I changed out my sub (dayton audio ultimax 15") for a more hi-fi sub, a dayton reference series hi-fi version 15. Same 4ft^3 box sealed, same dayton sw-1000 amp, and while it was clearly much lower distortion than the ultimax, the tradeoff for really low distortion seems to be oomph. It's clear as a bell, but it's wispy and ephemeral. I would put the original subwoofer back in, but my meth head brother disappeared about $3000 worth of my stereo equipment recently. In any case, if that's what you're going for, incredibly low intermodulation distortion, voice coil inductance and harmonic distortion, then the reference hi-fi is the sub for you. Unless you can afford Morels. But if you like to feel your bass too not just hear it, then you will HATE it. Strange thing to learn about subs: the less distortion, the less corporeal your bass.

Is it possible to drop too low and therefore not accurately reproduce a particular musical instrument?
@dannywoods3928

If you recorded a silent room(like a recording studio) on a full range system it would play silent. And if you recorded a classic guitar, or flute, you'd get whatever was recorded. Things like how the flute sound interacted with the room, especially if it was a large space. -> insert instrument here and get the same explanation. People usually aren't aware of what low frequency information there is in the world until they can take it out and put it back in again.

Mark : No.. I find the more you lack in the lowest notes makes you want to compensate (turning up) the bass where you do have it.. (not good).. In terms of the physics of a speaker: A speaker that is good at going very low will naturally sacrifice efficiency, or the ‘tight/snap/control/higher frequencies’ of the driver... (2 of 3 is easy) Trying to fight the physics for all 3 well (deep, efficiency, control) is fought by over-building/gobs of money

Bass is problematic because, at low volume, bass needs a boost independent from the mains controlled by master volume control. This means the sub has to be integrated to the mains, possibly through DSP, whereby bass volume can be controlled independently from mains. With my DSP, I can set bass crossover, bass level, and distance. I have made settings at half gain so I can increase bass volume when listening to music from mains at a low volume. For the most part, the only time bass is just right is when I'm running it as a LFE channel where SPL for all channels is matched at an average listening level at about 60db for low dynamic range dance music. In other words, getting bass from a full range speaker might be the best idea, utilizing an old fashioned bass boost button for listening at low volume.

My opinion is that both can be musical if designed right. When I say designed right, I think it much, much harder for a MFG to get a ported one right. Also to me, the responsiveness, or speed or rhythm or pace of a sealed sub is more musical. In my audio system I only use sealed. In my HT I prefer the boat and slam of ported so exclusively use them for that. Plus I like the gentler roll off of a sealed system for music, I think it makes it easier to integrate it with higher end speakers for music playback.

I am 19 so naturally I bought a good pair of headphones ( Bowers and Wilkins P7 wireless) to have the best possible audio on the bus everyday even though I could get better sound of they weren't wireless. I think the future of high end audio is looking good but for the absolute top performance I think it's dying. People want good sound, but they care more about integration and easy-to-use. I think the first of the future is here, the Sonos Amp. Class D amplifier and decent enough for the average Spotify listener. The thing is when you have hdmi arc and app control it doesn't matter how good your tube Amp system with servo woofers and electrostatic mid range and tweeters are. If you can use your high end speaker for everything and enjoy it every day it will win. So for PS Audi I think your future is in integration with the TV.

@Marcus I'm 57 so I'm living in 2 different worlds. I have 11, 12, 14 year old children. The oldest has nice wired Sony Monitor headphones but choses Dollar store BT headphones $12 USD because they have sd card slot. 12 year old is BT earbuds 11 year old doesn't care. So yeah I can see that convience is good enough. Plus they don't need to play loud like my older generation craves. hmm.

@Jim Olson. ah but here's the twist. I haven't exposed them to the hi side... I've been waiting... Letting them find their own way. And yes its convienance. The first born occasionally experienced the Sony headphones early on. Then a couple years ago I bought him the (same)mdr-v6 for Christmas. He latched on to those, took them to school, (they have to have something these days at school, required) the bag got "lost" and he loves them so much that he didn't want loose them at school so he got a $12 dollar store BT pair with a sd card slot. He is 2 grades ahead in math and honor roll for years and years. He still uses the Sony's wired into the ps4 controller and hes the champ. But, since I have been studying here at the Paul's Causual College Class, I have made some improvements to my design and I believe that in the end I'm looking at a family of audiphilles. Just not the 120db type.

I suggest everyone take a look at: www.cerwinvega.com/cerwin-vega-history.html Also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altec_Lansing I'll admit to the fact that my multichambered subwoofer uses an Altec-Lansing 416-8B driver in it: greatplainsaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/416-8B_LF_Speaker.pdf This driver has been around for decades and decades. Free air resonance Fs 24Hz. Equivalent volume Compliance Vas 22.9 cu.ft. So best put in a sealed box of about 23cuft This thing is kinda the golden standard, even by today's standard. I really look forward to PS Audios soon to be released speaker line.

"Musical" subwoofers are a thing of legend. Over the decades few have appeared and certainly Paul's IRS5’s are among them. IMO most subwoofers are designed to generate hugely powerful sine waves. That’s why when you hear the thump in a car crash in a movie you can feel it. But musical subs do special things in the lower two octaves. Especially the first octave ( 20Hz → 40Hz ). In a previous post I used the slap of a bass fiddle as an example. Not only do you hear the fundamental you should hear all the harmonics that go with it. Angel Broadway, Gershwin's “Crazy for You”, CDC 7 54618 2, Track 13, “I Got Rhythm”. Recorded live on a Broadway stage. The cast is heard dancing on the wooden stage. With a “Musical” sub you can not only hear it you can feel it. And with all the first two octaves of fundamental and harmonics. I’ve taken this recording to HiFi shows over the years. It’s very telling. Most subs today are Helmholtz Resonators: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmholtz_resonance They're easy to design and build and make a big THUMP. Especially the ones used in cars. Ever blow across the top of an empty coke bottle? Toot Toot! That's a Helmholtz Resonator.

I've found some very reasonable priced subs that sound incredibly musical, and had many people ask if I even had a sub, or not. But this was in my car audio setup. Really have not played with subs in my home yet. But even a cheap Polk Db series, 12 inch sub, in a factory Polk slot ported box that's about 1.5 cubic feet, powered by the sub channel of my PPI 900.5 amp. It's a class D, and the sub channel claims 440, or 460 (honestly forget) at 2 Ohm, and that's what my sub is, 2 ohm. So it's got plenty of power to keep up with my 75 watt separates. Turn it down, and blend it in correctly, and you just hear almost full range without noticing the sub. And that's what you want right? So okay. I get it. A car is not a room, but it seems to me that you spending a decent amount of time to make it all work good together is very important, and maybe just buy stuff in the same price range, and work at it. Might even need room treatments I assume too. That makes sense to me anyway. I think when I finally buy a sub. I'm just going to spend a lot of time learning about, and setting it all up. And I'll buy one that is about the same level as the rest of my HiFi. Or at least no better then like a REL, or maybe a Rythmik Servo type sub in the $500-$750 range. Can't see spending more then that, and even that's pushing it IMO. Bur I'm just at an "I really enjoy good music" stage. I'll never be that radical audiophile who's never happy. I'm always happy anyway. 🤗 😜 💩 Or at least I always have a shit eating grin on my face anyway. 🤣🤣🤣

You obviously have heard a subwoofer from Rythmik or HSU then. SVS are solid but not the best for the price (especially the ones with a digital display and remote control smartphone apps) and PowerSoundAudio is supposed to be solid as well.

That is a huge sub tower on the IRSV's.. It has immense potential but it's fed a signal that is 'Flat' same goes for the midrange tweeter towers all being fed a 'Flat' signal.. I'm willing to bet i'd sit in that room listen to my tunes and shake my head.. No system/speaker in the world sounds good 'Flat' with all recordings.. EQ is a must.. It's not the system it's the recordings that needs EQ.. A speaker will only play the signal that feeds it.. Poor recording = Poor sound. So no chance in hell can them IRSV's sound good no matter the source..
