When I was a kid I had a few incidents that caused brain damage. I was considered retarded, a term I was frequently called. I rode the short bus to special classes, I was held back a grade. I received many patronizing lectures about how disabled people could still be useful to society. When they wanted to affirm my disabled status, they decided to give me an IQ test. They didn't believe the results and required me to take several more. My lowest test was 130 and my mean score was 168. I was told I was normal enough to no longer go to special classes but I never could adapt to normal classes and was frequently told it was my fault. The brain damage is definitely real as I frequently forget where I am, what I'm doing, and sometimes my own name. It usually comes back with in a few minutes, but it's so damn frustrating. It's even more frustrating to know that you should be more than you are, but just can't because of situations outside your control. I could go into it a lot deeper on how many layers of messed up the situation has, but I'm not trying to write an autobiography here. I guess I'm just saying that IQ isn't everything. The brain is complicated. Life is complicated. Maybe the law of averages isn't a real thing, but there certainly are situations where gifted people feel cursed.
@doctorhunger921

I don't know, I'm a little skeptical about your claim. A mean score of 168 would put you DEEP within the 99th percentile, so you can understand my disbelief. It would be as unbelievable as if you were to say "I won 500 million dollars playing the lottery".
@DonCDXX
@DonCDXX 3 жыл бұрын
@@doctorhunger921 You missed the point. If you take an IQ test every day for a week, your range of scores should be no more than +/-.5σ from your mean test score. I took a series of IQ tests at age 10 and covered a ranged +/-2σ from my mean test score. My point is about how my IQ seems to vary wildly. What's effortless one day can be overwhelmingly difficult the next. At the time, there was no diagnosis for what caused this abnormality and I don't know if that has changed since I don't keep up with that field. It also means that I have almost no confidence in what I know. Because I know I can vary so drastically in intellectual capability, I have difficulty trusting my own mind.

Pattern recognition universal tests are available, but it is mainly an aggregate of mathematics, patterns, intuitive and logical abilities, cryptography which is kind of just pattern recognition in your native language. Its not always accurate, but you can do different tests and get an average; it also can be fluid depending on mental health and various factors but tends to remain at a constant.
@Mythologiga
@Mythologiga 3 жыл бұрын
No, it's the ability to recognize pattern. Being very good at recognizing patterns is of tremendous help in understanding advanced concept in many fields of science, but it doesn't automatically makes you knowledgable. The amount of work and focus you'll be able to put in is a major component of that too, and it isn't measured by IQ, but rather by a personality trait called "conscientiousness". Also, in many fields, especially with the amount of information available today, you need a lot of soft skills to help you properly collaborate with other people, as it's becoming increasingly difficult to produce major results alone. Being very smart is helpful in becoming competent and achieving success, but it isn't an end all be all, and it certainly doesn't automatically makes you knowledgable.

The U.S. military found that it could not train people of IQ 85 and lower to do ANY job, so they gave up and Congress passed a law making it illegal for the military to enlist or draft anyone with an IQ of 85 (or 83, not sure which number got into the statute). If the military can't train those people and they've had a lot of time, resources, motivation and support to find some way, or some job they can do. And, as far as I know, psychologists haven't yet found a way of training those people for jobs either, so it looks like quite a problem, especially given that intelligence is mostly genetic and some low-IQ people have a lot of children.

Look, you can find many people to fit almost any category including people with High IQ who are not affected by a law of averages, however when you account for something such as common sense, it’s a pretty vague and nebulous term I mean common sense could be anything from crossing a street at a green light, to shaking someones hand during a deal, these are things that are often times learned, and could be affected by cultural differences, Terman tested people who were for the most part doctors and lawyers, people that are often times proficient in using common sense, lawyers argue and deduce an individuals innocence, while doctors deduce illnesses and injuries from symptoms, there needs to be another study done to conclude whether or not a law of averages applies to intelligence analysing different attributes in comparison such as, coordination, memory, the ability to produce artwork, ethics, proficiency in language, response time. Some of these are hard to measure but if narrowed down to specific tests that can accurately measure or predict ones proficiency in one subject when compared to intelligence, then we could determine whether a law of averages does affect the human mind and how

The Gretna, Nebraska school district psychologist Dr. Winters administered my test. Result was 139. Due to the abuse I received during my critical development years, it's been nothing but a curse. Having an exceptionally powerful mind that runs programming it got as a child in a fundamental christian household, results in subconscious self talk that is entirely self destructive. One thing that's very tricky with IQ is that you can be unbalanced in your IQ subscores. For example, I have Asperger's (ASD) and my vocabulary is in the "genius" range and some other scores like spelling are in the "gifted" range, but some of my scores (such as spatial puzzle solving) are just average and some are even below average (such as processing speed). For that reason, my overall IQ is 118, but obviously that doesn't reflect the whole picture. That just might be common with the autism spectrum, but it shows that your overall IQ score doesn't reflect whether you are "gifted/genius" or intellectually disabled. Also, most IQ tests don't test beyond the 99.9th percentile or the .01th percentile (for reference 145 or above is considered the 99.9% percentile and I believe 50 or below would be considered the .01th percentile, though I may be wrong), so when you hear about supergenius people with IQs of 160 or 200 or whatever, that's completely arbitrary as most IQ tests aren't even designed to measure that number. In reality, the highest score you can achieve on most IQ tests is 145 and the lowest 50. It does make sense that there would be a very rare few people with IQs above or below that, but like I said, that number is completely arbitrary and is often up to the personal opinion of the person administering the examination. With people with profound intellectual disability, it can also be really tricky as most of them have severe cerebral palsy or another medical condition that can cause them to be unable to speak or move, meaning that it is extremely difficult to administer a traditional IQ test. For this reason, the "profound" category is often just an assumption doctors make about the severely physically disabled, when for all you know some of them could be geniuses (there was a book that came out when I was growing up, I forget exactly what it was called, but its protagonist was a young girl with cerebral palsy who was a genius, but labeled as mentally handicapped). Mild and moderate intellectual disability is easier to measure as most of those who have it are fully or moderately verbal. Again, I'm not saying that people with IQs *that* high or low don't exist, it's just at that point it's really hard to measure. When you toss autism into the equation, that makes it even harder because like I said, most of us have uneven skills (superior intellectual capabilities and memory (except for those with a form of autism where they also have an intellectual disability), but a slower processing speed, as well as sensory and social skills issues. It gets even trickier for those with severe autism, many of who are just assumed by doctors to have intellectual disabilities as well. Because many with nonverbal autism cannot express themselves, they are basically trapped in their own heads, regardless of their intellectual strengths. So IQ is not perfect, it does not take into account a disability or cultural background (what he was saying about a cultural intellectual disability just highlights how some IQ tests are very culture-biased, you can be a genius in terms of intellectual capacity and still score low on an IQ test because you don't know what something common in another culture refers to, or because you can't read English), or other forms of intelligence (i.e. social/emotional intelligence). Sorry for this rambling wall of text lol. Just my 2 cents, I'm not an expert in any regard but I am passionate about this subject. EDIT: I looked up what the bottom IQ percentile is (www.omnicalculator.com/health/iq-percentile) and it's more around 50 (25 would be extremely low, and as I said most IQ tests don't measure that low). So I have changed my answer to reflect that.

Is knowledge based on memorization and factoids or total comprehension of the subject at hand and the ability to add cohesive input to the conversation? I would guarantee the later, the problem with measuring intelligence is that it’s quite easy for people to memorize several factoids with no basis of comprehension when asked to delve further into detail. I believe intelligence should be measured by your ability to create independent hypotheses and how true these pan out. Generally that’s why I believe pattern recognition is a fair sign of intelligence as this is a measurement of your capability to recognize your environment, thus also a level of intelligence would be geared towards how well you adapt and can implement these changes.

Is this relatable to anyone? I thought I was smart when I fell in the top 7% (supervised IQ test I did when I was 16). Massive ego booster, obviously. It motivated me enough to finish school as top academic achiever. Now however... Took me 2 years longer to finish my studies. The times I've walked the extra mile to understand everything, and deliver projects with in-depth detail; was the times I scored the lowest. At best I got average grades when I just rushed through things to get it done. My peers who skimped tasks and projects often got better results. Uni was a real passion killer for me. So, I don't know. Maybe the career psychologist put me on a trip. Maybe I've had some cognitive decline. Maybe the world is catering for quick & easy.

One thing I've had to realize is that it's not like the movies. I don't know what kind of IQ I have, it's bugged me my whole life (I'm only 26), but the reason I say it's not like the movies is because the movies show high IQ people figuring something out and learning something REALLY fast, when in reality it can take years for someone who's incredibly intelligent to figure something out. In a way I'm glad you had that experience because number one it's real, and number two it's humbling. Like the person above me said, a lot of people just figure out how to beat the system, what you need to understand is that learning HOW TO learn is a skill in and of itself, high IQ people still have to take the time to learn stuff, it all takes time and investment.

Because the guy completelly fucked up the definition. IQ is devided according to normal distribution with standard deviation equal to 15 points. I wasn't able to find any table that does count more then 4 standard deviations, but bathe matically, IQ can go up to 1/7 000 000 000 being 6.3 standard deviations above the average. 100 + 15*6,3 = 194,5... You're god damn right.
@bingbong2179
@bingbong2179 3 жыл бұрын
@@konoko1002k 1/7 billion is the chance of someone having an IQ >194.5 assuming your maths is right. You measure the probability of the event IQ > x as 1 - the area of the curve up until the point x. Hence technically the probability of having any given IQ point is actually 0 on a continuous distribution, this isn't observed typically however as IQ is rounded to integers and isn't allowed to be an infinite sequence of decimal places. Back to the idea that IQ >200 isn't possible, If we look at the fact that IQ > 194.5 is a 1/7 000 000 chance, where that 1 / 7billion person sits could very well be a bit after 200 but is not so likely to be past 210. Additionally, IQ tests are generally understood to lose accuracy in effectively separating individuals past the genius level (145-160) hence their reliability is essentially pointless past the fact that "this person is very very intelligent". Point is for the those 1 in a million people it really is irrelevant to consider their IQ as they know themselves to be incredibly intelligent and would much rather prove that by achieving something deserving of that status
@konoko1002k
@konoko1002k 3 жыл бұрын
@@bingbong2179 Nice comment about the testing, but it misses the point completelly. Assuming that there is one person that is objectively smarter then every single other person on the planet does place his status as 1/7 000 000 000, meaning that statistically speaking his IQ is 194,5. Measuring the actual IQ has nothing to do with this statistical fact.
@bingbong2179
@bingbong2179 3 жыл бұрын
@@konoko1002k I see what you mean but I don't think it does mean that it's 194.5 necessarily. If you assume that the normal distribution is insufficient at modelling people past IQ of 160 it could very well be the case that under the true probability distribution someone does have an IQ over 200. We use the normal distribution out of its convenience for modelling 99% of people, there's no clear evidence that it is correct for the remaining 1% as there's too little sample size and too much variation across testing and so forth. Edit: that being said at a certain point you must wonder if IQ means anything outside of how rare their level of intelligence is and whether it can possible be compared relative to another person i.e. can you really say one person is "twice as smart as another", probably not, in that sense. The issue is that we're conflating "TRUE IQ" with "Measured IQ". If the number itself means nothing other than assigned rarity than it doesn't matter what distribution you use, as long as it is a bell-shape (this is not necessarily a normal distr I think). Oh additionally, when you think about it does th assumption of symmetry really make sense when you consider gifted vs mentally-retarded. Is there some scientific reason why it would PERFECTLY balance out. Probably not. Your answer is correct if you assume that a normal distribution holds, but I think you'd find there evidence to suggest outside of typical cases it is nowhere near perfect

That's not the general rule, actually. Intelligence, in the conventional sense of "general mental ability" or "g" or IQ (= the same things) is an expression of the total fine-tuning and coordination of an individual. It translates to IQ, immune system strength, musculoskeletal coordination, longevity, better health in general, oftentimes height, nerve conduction velocity, hand grip strength, and other proxies of whole-system coordination. People who really embody such whole-system strength usually aren't much motivated to be in the public spotlight so the whole-system manifestation of high intelligence isn't reflected in a popular stereotype other than however Hollywood might be presenting it at some time or another. When you're seeing highly-intelligent people who also have neurological deficiencies or afflictions of some sort, you're looking at exceptions to the general rule. Those exceptions, and Hollywood fantasies, are much more familiar, and the others, the more representative examples of high example, as I say, aren't seen in the public spotlight too commonly -- they are too busy in the backrooms devoting themselves to doing brilliant things and don't have any use or time for the distractions of the pubic spotlight. Another general rule, one that you might be seeing in the cases you're referring to, is "the more that's wrong (with a person), the more that's wrong (with that person)", i.e., if one has a morbidity, they strongly, strongly tend to have comorbidities as well. Read the research by Randy Thornhill and others about that.

I have never heard of an IQ score being calculated to 1 decimal place and I've done my share of reading in the area. In terms of the concept of "significant figures" that is used in virtually all scientific calculation, I can't see how an IQ test would give an examiner the amount of data needed to arrive at such a precise figure. The margin of error in the testing would preclude a conclusion as precise as to 1 decimal place, I would think, although I am certainly no expert on IQ testing. What test did you do? The use of Mental Age / Chronological Age times 100 hasn't been true in many decades. IQ now is a unit of statistical level of g-factor (general intelligence) based on the statistics of the bell curve. Typically this is done with a sigma of 15 and so the each unit of standard deviation from the norm is 15 points off the mean. A person one standard deviation above the norm has a g-factor of 115 IQ and one who is one standard deviation below the norm has a g-factor of 85 IQ. You'd be ill-informed to assume any autistic kid has any significant "gifts", much like the rest of us.

You can improve your IQ through study if you want. A lot of the test questions are based on what you know and how good your visual memory is. Math is a big part of it. But at the end of the day, it's probably more helpful to study something you want to be good at. Also, if I may say so, I've known a lot of high IQ scorers who routinely display shocking lack of sense. The brain is like a computer, and processing power is useless if you're using it up trying to suppress shame or fear, for instance. If you really want to be smart, learn to be honest, especially with yourself. The Temple of Apollo at Delphi has inscribed on it "know thyself,"" "nothing to excess," and "surety brings ruin." That's some wisdom.

The only two things I've noticed with gifted people is the inability to put abstract thoughts into the simple version of English we're taught. English is a limiting language. It's not even pretty like Spanish. Anyway, later they become the divine in Clarkesworld, my favorite magazine. Also, they make way more associations than normal people in abstract abilities, and this can make them look crazy. Sometimes, a simple task will be too complex while I'll go straight through. Some individuals pop out of time like anyone could have hit the target but they managed to, and then they say the average man was neglected, a flash in the pan. Welcome to the curse of many tech giants. You have to watch out for the way you introduce technology or that will happen.

If a conventional person of 65-70 years old retains his mental age of about 30 years: he looks at the world through the eyes of an adult rich in experience, but at the same time he gladly absorbs new information, keeps himself abreast of the latest events and technologies - does this mean that he is mentally disadvanteged?

@@timothyblake3574 I think you're trying to use big words and sound smarter than you feel you actually are, but I'll bite. The question you asked in a way doesn't make sense, if the individual keeps their mental age of about 30, I mean, I guess they're fine, the problem would be that they're not maturing past 30, so the same mistakes a 30 year old would make compared to someone in their 60's would still be happening and that is a problem, but admittedly it would be nice if those who are 65 to 70 would be more willing and accepting of new ideas and technology, and honestly I think that's happening, in many ways because of the internet, since ideas are so quickly spread and so readily available it's hard not to have an abundance of resources at your disposal to move with the times even if you're significantly older than the newest generation.

@@jackrose5077 first of all, no one asked your opinion here to get answers in the "I think" style. What you think about - you can leave it for your environment. The last place I would like to sound smart is KZfaq comments. I asked the question based on the simplest mathematical formula given in this video. And, most likely, it is applicable to a certain age category of persons, after which it sharply loses its relevance. I am aware of crises and other psychological distress that a person in their 30s can face. Therefore, if you are 70, but in your mind you are 30, then your IQ = 42.85 (formula in the video), but you are not retarded. I just drew attention to this remarkable fact, and did not even think that it would be able to cause aggression in some teenager in the comments. I like it, keep up the good work
