This past spring I attended the FRC North Carolina State Championships and got to talk to a bunch of the teams. If you've never heard of FIRST Robotics, you're in for a real treat, because this competition is AWESOME. (If you haven't seen the hub video for all these interviews, check it out first! • The annual engineering... )
These teams, thousands of them, have only about 2 months to design, build, and test robots to play a brand new game before the competitions begin, and then their work is put to the test! It would be a lot for any professional engineer, but these kids are still in high school! It's pretty incredible.
This video is the complete pit interview with FIRST Team 8727. Enjoy!

If you're interested in finding a team or attending an event, here's the official team search from FIRST:

And if you want to know more about any specific team (like a link to their website) you can probably find it on Blue Alliance:
www.thebluealliance.com/
------------------------------------------------------
This is a world map that shows events and teams. I'm not sure how accurate it is because it doesn't look official, but it's a lot easier to search by eye! (and it also doesn't include the other FIRST programs like FLL and FTC (FRC was featured in the video))

When I saw mission critical RGB I thought they might be blasting the field with narrow bands of light to mess with color registers on other bots.

Aw man this is a huge nostalgia trip. I haven't thought of FIRST since high school robotics. We didn't have a lot of the tools we have access to now but the hacker spirit of making stuff work with what you have never fades.

@AlphaPhoenix To follow up, my kids attended the First Lego Explore Festival in Huntsville, AL today. They won the best solution to the Challenge award. We got to walk around the pits as well. Those are some serious robots these kids are building! Do they design it from scratch, or is there some structure in place already?

This didn't exist when I was in school. The best I had was a course in uni where we had to program a little "lego"-style robot to not run into a wall. I am SO jealous of today's kids.

if youre fermiliar with the frc game for this year you probably know about the high level teams that can score like 5 balls in the autonomous period. when my team was in sacramento we cam across a rookie team that was nowhere near the level to do this and knew it, so instead of having a normal one or 2 ball auto like everyone else, they positioned themselves near the line and rolled their preloaded ball directly into the other teams area hoping to screw up their high performance auto. it usually worked

I’m a member of 8727, (programmed the neopixel indication toggle in 2022, moved to mechanical for next season). Glitch 1.0 was disbanded during Covid, but a few of its members (and mentors from spork) came to the new team! (Not enough members to qualify as the old team 5854). Also the team is hosted through our high school so we had access to many machines and people that know how to use them .

We had a few highly involved mentors, but our team is student lead. Last years robot was almost entirely cadded by seniors (high school team) (very few younger members were familiar with fusion360). We also had a very long build process so electrical and programming had to scramble before competition.

@@alexboniske4035 Thank you for commenting Alex. I am very impressed with how well the team did. Congratulations! I also really liked the ingenuity displayed by the members. All of the technical expertise required to get all the electronics and mechanisms working is quite a task. Well done! What would you say were your top 3 obstacles?
@alexboniske4035
@alexboniske4035 Жыл бұрын
@@marcfruchtman9473 Our team, especially programming had major issues with time, so out autonomous never got past a two ball auto (we were implementing a 4 ball path at states). We also discovered an issue with our drivetrain which had to much variability to do a complex autonomous path. My personal greatest obstacle was probably my lack of familiarity with c++ as well as my lack of understanding about the time commitment that FRC would be.
@marcfruchtman9473
@marcfruchtman9473 Жыл бұрын
@@alexboniske4035 I wasn't expecting you to say C++... I sort of figured the programming language would be different. Time is a huge factor, especially when you have to figure stuff out as you progress. This field is pretty enormous... engineering, understanding electronics such as drives, power supplies etc, understanding controls, and then on to programming... so congrats on your group's successes and progress.
