Ginger Baker on drums was a revelation for most rock drummers. His jazz background gave Cream so much rhythmic depth. RIP Ginger.

Little could I imagine over fifty years ago when I was going to Cream concerts that two generations later young people would be listening to, discussing, and enjoying the music that was so important and magical in my youth. It's as mind-blowing as their music.

I can vividly recall wondering if the music of Cream and other bands I liked would survive to the future. Some did (Pink Floyd), some didn't (Ten Years After).

Jeff Putnam--I could say the same. Ain't it great these young ones are discovering these great artists from our day? Remember Cream was also called the first "super group" in the day. I went to their concert when they came to Iowa (!). My ears were numb for at least 2 hours afterward. When we were young, we had some great, great bands, and a phenomenal variety. Such fun to see the younger ones discovering--and liking--these great bands.

Yes, Cream's 1967 "Disraeli Gears" album cover is one of the most psychedelic album covers of all time. Y'all might like the equally psychedelic "Tales of Brave Ulysses" off it, for some real trippiness. ("White Room" isn't from that album, though. It's from their 1968 "Wheels of Fire" album.)

@@ilikejohnhurt Yes, part of the Wheels Of Fire album was recorded live (sort of, as there are some studio overdubs on the final album). The album was originally a two record set, with disc one being the studio recording and disc two the live set.

My best friend in high school introduced me to “ Disraeli Gears” by Cream. Loved it, so different and Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were perfection!! As someone has already noted White Room was on The Wheels of Fire album. ( equally psychedelic cover). Thanks for bringing back memories of sitting around listening to some of the best music ever recorded (in my opinion). Please check out “Strange Brew”❤️

Cream was Hendrix's favorite band. Look up his appearance on the Lulu show where he was supposed to play 'Hey Joe' but instead played Cream as a tribute.

I've no idea what happened to it, but it included a version of "Theme For An Imaginary Western". You must know that song. All good stuff. Thanks for your response.

Lots of great lyrics in this song - "Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes" - Descriptions of a train station: "Restless diesels, good-bye windows" and shadows running from themselves because of the lights of passing trains

Sometimes a song's lyrics don't need to explain anything, but just to describe. A lot of psychedelic music is written just for the experience and not necessarily to tell a story. I never tried to figure out what this song is about, and I never get tired of hearing it.

Poet Pete Brown wrote these lyrics: "Together, Brown and Bruce wrote many of Cream's songs, including the hits "I Feel Free", "White Room" and "SWLABR"; Brown, Bruce and Clapton also wrote "Sunshine of Your Love". After the break-up of Cream, Bruce and Brown continued to write songs together. Brown wrote the lyrics for most of Bruce's solo albums."

Cream formed in 1966 and disbanded in December 1968. In that short period they sold millions of records worldwide as well as sold out concerts. They weren't called The Cream for nothing! So good...

This is an iconic late Sixties rock song (1967-68). You can see rock has already come a LONG way already from the pop tunes of 1965. To me, the changes from the first part of the Sixties to the second part are stunning.

that sound Jordan was talking about is the wah-wah pedal on Clapton's guitar creating that "crying" sound as he rocks the wah-wah pedal while playing that smokin' solo 🔥🎸

@@ronmccluskey2140 Crybaby was the model name of the Vox wah wah pedal, now made by Dunlop. I used to have one when I played guitar in rock bands in the 60s and 70s.

@@evanbirnholz2803 well, technically the vox was never a called a vox crybaby. Vox used number systems, like the v846 and v847. Crybaby was just crybaby. But both the vox and crybaby pedals were made by Thomas organ, and then JEN, which was formed by the CEO of Thomas organ and the owner of EKO in Italy. On the inside, the vox and crybaby wahs were identical. Vox, Jennings really had nothing to do with the wah wah pedal other than their name on it. Like the vox tone bender, it was made by sola sound. Why would Thomas organ make 2 pedals exactly the same? The vox could only be sold in vox stores, and vox got the money. The crybaby could be sold anywhere and Thomas organ got the money. The patent wasn't approved until September 1970, and after production had moved to Italy in 67, JEN began making wahs using that circuit or a derivative of it for every company that wanted a wah, so vox could do very little about it. When Thomas organ went under in the very very early 80s, vox didn't want the wah, so Jim dunlop bought the circuit, the crybaby name and so on, and then vox actually contracted dunlop to make vox branded wahs all the way into the late 90s.

If you want to get into Cream, you must do "Crossroads" , but you may want to first do Robert Johnson's original "Crossroads". Robert Johnson was pure BLUES, and he didn't record very many songs, yet, his blues songs became the absolute building blocks for 1960's Rock! Cream, The Rolling Stones, and just about everyone else has turned an old Robert Johnson song into a Rock classic. By the way, Eric Clapton himself does the vocals on Crossroads.

I'm supernatural they had a whole episode dedicated to Robert Johnson had the story of well him selling his soul two of course a crossroads demon. 'Goodbye' windows are those where you stand to wave to a loved one who is leaving. 'goodbye windows' are especially those on trains where you lover waves as he/she is leaving or of course returning. Clapton on guitar was amazing, Ginger Baker on drums was crazy, Jack Bruce on bass guitar and vocals. was smooth. They were great live - called the first 'Supergroup' consisting of professionals at the height of their creativity.

One of the first and greatest supergroups!! Clapton and Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were all huge names before they formed the group. This is psychedelic rock - don't read too much into the lyrics. And this is not 70's - it is mid- to late 60's.

You hit it right on the head Jay. The song is about depression, or should I say poem. Because the lyrics were actually written by a poet who was friends with the bass player / lead singer on this song. That same poet friend also wrote the lyrics to "Sunshine of Your Love" as well, plus two other songs that you haven't reacted to yet.

Years ago, I went up to visit my son at college and see his dorm room. I met his dorm mate and the first thing he said was, "your son is so cool!" I asked what made him so cool? "He's got a copy of Cream's Disraeli Gears and the Beatles albums!" I replied, "He's not the cool one...those are my records!"

Y’all will love Crossroads and Badge! I wore that album you see on the screen out when I was in high school! They and SRV and Double Trouble are arguably the two best 3 piece bands ever. Of course SRV added Reese Wynans keyboard into the mix later on… We won the local talent show doing those two songs my Senior year…..

Cream- Jack Bruce- lead vocals, bass guitar, Eric Clapton- Lead guitar, and Ginger Baker- drums- were regarded as the first Supergroup- and it is obvious as to why. Each was at the top for their specialty. Great records, some real gems- I like Badge the best, but all their stuff is great!

That was released in 1967. It was ground breaking music in its day. Each musician in the band were already legends before they formed Cream. No one played drums like that. No one else played guitar or bass like that. No one else wrote songs and lyrics like that. No one else sang like that. They inspired people like Jimi Hendrix. BTW - look up the YT video of Brian Auger telling the story of how Jimi played on stage with Cream and Clapton couldn't keep up with him. He gave up and went backstage asking, "What the hell am I going to do now?" Well, as you know, he survived and he and Hendrix became good friends.

I would love to watch your reaction to Eric Clapton's song Layla, the original 1970 version by Eric's group called Derek and the Dominoes. Eric wrote it as a love song to George Harrison's wife Pattie Boyd. Eric later wrote Wonderful Tonight to Pattie and George, while still a Beatle wrote Something to her. Pretty amazing to hear three epic love songs all written about the same person.

The lyrics were written by a poet friend of Jack Bruce, bass player, who wrote the music and supplies the vocal on this track.

Although this one always makes me want to hear "Tales of Brave Ulysses" next, it would be more of a change of pace if you did "I Feel Free" - another outstanding song, but in a different vein from the last two.

You should try, "Badge," by Cream. It's written by Eric Clapton and his friend George Harrison (Beatles) and George plays Guitar on the track along with Eric (they both play together on the Beatles studio recording of, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," both recordings from around the same time (1968 and 1969).

The entire album "Disraeli Gears" is fantastic and worth a listen. The song "We're Going Wrong" features some of Ginger Baker's best drumming.

Listened to and played this in late 60s. Great to see new generation also groove on it. Really funny watching your heads bob up and down for 5 -10 minutes! She really caught the groove and late 60s feel. You're right, the music does 'slow down' in the intro parts from 4/4 to 5/4 timing - cool. Some earliest use of wah-wah pedal and epic guitar lines. It does sound like a crying voice and the pedal device is actually called the 'Cry Baby'. I used one last night in rehearsel.

I miss the GREAT MUSICIANS. I had forgotten how great the "wah-wah" pedal made the old Axe sound. And I was listening to another where I had forgotten about a "Leslie" whirlybird speaker. OMG, I so miss those days. Most of today's kids have no idea what we have left them.

If you like Eric Clapton I think you're like "Layla" buy him with Derek and the Dominos. It starts out with a good guitar lick, the singing with the guitar lick interspersed. Then the last 2/3 is a piano with guitar and drums in the background.

You would really enjoy Paul Revere and the raiders. Indian Reservation is not only very well done but deals with a social issue that still plagues us. The lead singer is Marc Lindsey is native American and a great singer.

2 years and the output was staggering, Clapton was a supergroup junkie...Cream, John Mayall Bluesbreakers, Yardbirds, Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith....in 1984 he played for Roger Waters solo tour, he seemed to just enjoy playing with others, also BFF with George Harrison and they fought over Patty Boyd, on a different level than anyone else and he's still going.

I once was listening to an all request radio show & someone requested “In A Gadda DaVida” the long version . After they played it the next caller requested that they never play the long version of “In A Gadda Da Vida” ever again !😂😂😂

Got to love Clapton and Cream. Strange Brew is an interesting song by Cream. Tears In Heaven is both beautiful and heartbreaking song by Eric Clapton given that it is about him coming to terms with the death of his 4 year old son.

I was in high school in the SF Bay Area, so the artwork alone recommended this album. But then we put it on the turntable and got our minds blown. Cream started out mostly blues based rock, but it did take long before they stretched out and flexed their musical muscles. As others have noted, drummer Ginger Baker was primarily a jazz drummer. Bassist and primary lead vocalist Jack Bruce also had a lot of jazz background as well as blues. Eric Clapton was already a renowned guitarist, having played with The Yardbirds, whom you already know also hosted Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck previously. He was a standout with the premier blues band artist, John Mayall and his band The Bluesbreakers. A side note, Mayall had a habit of bringing us the finest blues guitarists and musicians in general, having mentored Peter Green, guitarist extraordinaire, and Mick Fleetwood, monster drummer, who went on to form Fleetwood Mac.

Without notice, Clapton walked away from the band for a few reasons. He wanted more Blues, he was also in the throes of a heroine addiction. If you get the chance, watch his documentary; Life In 12 Bars. I have everything by Cream, Derek and the Dominoes and Eric Clapton. Thought I knew everything about him, I knew very little.

Eric loved the down home music of The Band. He went to visit them in Woodstock (68-69) to try and join them.

Nice reaction guys - thank you!! What you couldn’t have realised - listening to this now - is that before 1967, NO-ONE had ever played like this!! Sure, the Beatles, Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac were all breaking pretty new ground - but Cream started a trend in Live Rock which lasted 50+ years. And they started from a point of musical excellence! - even Clapton could never again quite capture the power and the spirit of this music after (say) 1975. You put together Rock’n’Roll & Blues & Progressive & a hint of Jazz - and this is what you got!! It was breathtaking and utterly transformative. 65-75 was one hell of a decade to live through !!

Huge song by Cream, my favorite!! How can you put 3 such talented giants together & not get perfection!! Ginger Baker made me want to play drums, and still haven’t given that dream up at 64! Love Eric no matter what, when, where, or with who!! Jack Bruce’s vocals is to die for! The song is about whatever you want it to be! Physcadelic Rock was definitely part of our parties when I was in my “hippie days”! ♥️The old white woman

This was one of the super groups of the 60's. Everyone of the 3 guys (Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker & Eric Clapton) was super talented but they also had big egos. So they didn't always get a long. They all came from previous successful bands. But in the few short years they were together they produced some classic songs such as "Crossroads", "Born Under A Bad Sign", "Tales Of Brave Ulysses", "White Room", "Strange Brew", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "SWLABR" etc.

This song was from 1968. The Love of my Life, who passed away on Apr 15, 2021, talked about being 16 when this came out and getting high to it, a few years later.

Amber, you are such a throwback to my generation. This was the music of my youth. 60s, 70s and 80s were the absolute best decades for music. Nothing will ever compare to the evolution music went through during these years. Peace out, girl. :)

Yep Jay, Eric Clapton is in this band along with Jack Bruce on bass and vocals, and Ginger Baker on drums. Cream was only together from 1966-1968. This song was 68. They did a cover of Crossroads by 30's bluesman Robert Johnson.

Cream, a great British band that included some of the greatest musicians who ever lived. Eric Clapton, whom you've reacted to several times, was lead guitarist. The bassist was Jack Bruce (who sang the vocals on this song), and the drummer was the legendary Ginger Baker. They did four albums before going their separate ways, but they had some classic hits. Your next one HAS to be "Crossroads".

One thing to keep in mind about Cream is that they were a 3-piece band; Eric on guitar and some vocals, Jack Bruce on bass and lead vocals and the incredible Ginger Baker on drums. It's amazing how full a soundscape they created with just 3 people.

Cream was a power trio from the '70s. These are 3 of the best of the British musicians of the era. They named themselves Cream because of the old saying "The cream always rises to the top" meaning that the best will always rise above everyone else. Ginger Baker's drums pushed the beat, Jack Bruce's bass filled in on the percussion and, of course, Erik Clapton's guitar playing gave them their own sound. White Room was one of their biggest hits.
