Psychopaths can indeed learn to show love to other people even if they do not feel it inside themselves. David Wood is one living example, who, having attempted to murder his own father in his youth and spent years in prison, came to Christ and is a devoted husband and father.

Love is more than a feeling or sensation, especially in the case of God. While love can be related to empathy, it can come apart. There are many times when I'm not feeling particularly empathetic towards a person, but I can still love the person.

Extreme childhood traumas can cause personality disorders, take for example the person diagnosed as a "vulnerable narisist". Young and vulnerable and repeatedly experiencing abuse he at some point adopts the survival strategy of just looking out for himself. Under these conditions as a young child he has neither the strength, energy or resources to think or care for another, well most of the time. It's takes alot of effort for an adult survivor of child abuse to get his act together and proceed in a normal way with his life. Often learning how to go about things in the right way is helpful. I learned as a young mental health worker that praying for your clients and sincerely engaging with them is the best thing we can do. Also we learn from them too.

@@outoforbit- I don't think that's what is happening in the case of David Wood. He simply doesn't have any inherent feelings of empathy. In order to show love to his family he has to intellectualize those feelings and act as if he felt them.

The mental illnesses mentioned are all personality disorders, which have a much more characterological dimension to them as compared with mental illnesses such as anxiety disorders, major depression, and schizophrenia. In fact, personality disorders (including others like histrionic PD and borderline PD) used to be classified as Axis 2 disorders in the DSM, to put them in a class of their own. They come about when a person develops a number of early maladaptive schemas, e.g. Mistrust & Abuse; Entitlement; Punitiveness; Unrelenting Standards; Defectiveness; Emotional Deprivation; and several more (18 in total). Depending on which ones and how many are held, will determine the kind of personality disorder and its severity. Maladaptive schemas are highly persistent bundles of beliefs, memories, emotions, prediction and attitudes that act to filter out information that does not conform to them. Thus, people with personality disorders tend to be rigid and do not spontaneously get better. They can be treated, but many choose not to because they think they are fine, it is the world and other people who are wrong. If anyone is interested, psychologist and trainer Jeff Riggenbach, a Protestant Christian, has written a book called The Personality Disorder Toolbox. He describes psychological therapies that can gradually change the schemas and thus attitudes and behaviour. He draws only on psychological therapies only (mostly CBT) but I as a Catholic counsellor and student of Aquinas 101 am sure that there are many aspects of St Thomas's philosophy that could help people with PDs to change. Fr Little's comments on encouraging those lacking in compassion to behave in loving ways is a great start. Other aspects of virtue ethics may hold promise as well, plus a lot could be said about the benefits of a realist phosophical approach to undercut the over-learned solipsistic beliefs and coping strategies of people with PDs. Great answer to a great question.

Thankyou for this. I agree that PDs are not mental illness. Sometimes it is just the way people are and their attitudes/reponses can be modified, but not changed.

I totally agree with you regarding the background of people with personality disorders. I think though that the vulnerable narcissist is treatable, finding God can really change them. As a mental health worker I have seen this. Generations of certain maladaptions can cause personality disorders. It is well known in Scotland's mental health services that a large proportion of people with personality disorders have a family with a recent or even long line of free masonary.

@@outoforbit- That's interesting. Suggests spiritual warfare, no doubt. As for treatment, yes Narcissists vary in how treatable they are. I worked with one very long term and she did become quite a bit less shallow. These issues also bring up very valid questions about nature versus nurture. From my own experience (NB: I have not been formally diagnosed with any psychological illnesses), I tend to rely more on the Thomistic definition of love, but can't shake the feeling that I'm only acting out of a sense of quid pro quo or to "feel normal" and wonder where that feeling of affection is inside of me. Please pray for me, that God may take my heart of stone and put a heart within me, like in Ezekiel

The enemy is modifying humans so it's not entirely organic that some people don't feel compassion. However, one who tends to stay in their "thinking" brain and acts from there is not acting by instinct or emotions so those feelings might not come up from my personal experience having once been extremely emotional to now one who tries to act from thinking. Just something to think about.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:07 🤔 The episode addresses the question of how certain mental illnesses fit into creation and the problem of evil. 01:34 💡 Psychological illnesses, like physical evils, may have neurophysiological causes and are not a special case of the problem of evil. 03:22 🧠 St. Thomas' perspective on the mind distinguishes between physical and immaterial aspects, and mental illness can affect specific mental activities. 05:19 ❤️ Love, as defined by St. Thomas, is willing the good of another; individuals with psychological illnesses can learn to practice love by willing good even without the feeling. 06:25 🙏 There is hope for those with psychological illnesses through trust in God and treatments that promote positive reinforcement and virtue development. Nice. Only thing I’d have added is a sentence or two on how emotions do seem to be integral to our moral development in certain ways, despite their reputation of being strictly confounding in that process (though they often are confounding of course), and although in principle someone without emotional affect can love by its strict definition, it will likely in reality be especially difficult for them to get there.
@westvespers
@westvespers Жыл бұрын
Although angels perhaps don't have emotional affect as we do and are still able to love, they also did not Learn to love via temporal process; they were created with their faculties fully developed (presumably?). It is difficult to articulate what I mean here, but I do seriously suspect the neuronal emotionality we experience is a very, very important part of our pursuit of virtue as creatures comprised of both body and soul, even though this emotionality can often be problematic and mislead us in a lot of ways

@@westvespers you bring up a good point. I think it is encompassed in the physical element of the mind, but your statement does elaborate it. But on the other hand, it is assumed that psychopaths lack emotion. But it's one thing to be apathetic, but it's another to enjoy doing evil (separating sin on this point). If there was a lack of emotion, I feel psychopaths would be the most rational/logical and would be categorized along with asberger's/autism.

Somatic healing is providing new hope for me these days, but regardless, in the end, we were all created to learn how to love and be loved and our God will not fail to achieve His perfect love, in all who a) desire it and b) trust and rely upon Him in all circumstances. We do not *feel* compassion or emotional love at all, for anyone, not even ourselves; but we do not only act out of self-satisfaction... that detail must be made clear. I know this because *I myself* deal on a daily basis with this, and it develops, you do not start your life with it, it develops over time... but when you calculate that love is not an emotion at all, but an election of the will; that changes things totally- it is a conscious choice of who/what to vote for, and something you know you cannot revoke ever once sent.

God loved us before we loved him, so the way we love god is different from the way we love other people, Jesus says in John 14, "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” When we love god, we respond to his love by obeying him and seeking the divine nature. Hope this helps.

Even as an atheist I love these videos. While I (obviously) don't agree with most of Aquinas's ideas, there's no denying that there is a certain elegance to his system of philosophy, not to mention his capacity for philosophizing, that one cannot help but marvel at. However, what I found problematic in this presentation is the idea that God may consistently allow evil for some kind of greater good. And in fairness, one may retroactively look at the lives of certain saints to mine evidence of this. Nevertheless, it appears to turn humans into means to an end since their suffering is being justified for the sake of some greater good. This runs against some basic moral ideas and thus requires an answer of some kind. Thank you for the wonderful content! #AskAFriar

The leitmotiv for all of us may be this: “But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgement: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.” Mathew:5:22 This chapter from my essay "The Children of Light and children of Descartes" speaks about the attempts to refashion the human nature at the begining of the 20th century, according to the ambition to establish new kind of authority with the flare of the 'science'. It came in the aftermath of several centuries long process of the inventing new philosophical claims, in the dried out beds of the ancient Christian faith and culture, and those who tried to enact them were Sigmund Freud, C.G. Jung , Adler and others. This chapter is my refutation of these, and of all psychoanalysis, together with Wilhelm Reich, who was Freud's pupil and Marxist, who coined the term 'the sexual revolution', which wrecked havoc in the Western world. The other chapter that seems to me as significant as this is "Do We Have Souls?" because we, who are Catholics, believe that we have the immortal souls, namely the immortal powers of the souls which are possible and active intellect, and will (which is the intellective appetite).With the apostasy this truth waned away into the oblivion and the scientific mindsets are left to deal with only a brain, which is really a thing that is animated by the intellect and is a speculative power, and can be that "that is destructible", which Aristotle stated in "De Anima" and St. Thomas Aquinas fully accepted. I hope you find it interesting. My greatest care is still whether this is truthful account, and I believe, somehow, that is.

I would like you to clarify some fragments of Holy Scripture that I find quite difficult and around which various myths have been created. These are: Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13:32, 33. The term "Nephilim" also appears on the Internet. What is he referring to? I think a question would be: the Bible is a book of faith, so what is the significance of these characters and events for the Catholic faith itself? Thank you very much.

I can tell you, first-hand, how things like psychopathy/sociopathy and the like fit into a purpose for the individual; but to do so accurately, we've got to take a bit of a mental "time-trip" back a couple million years ago into the earliest days of the Old Stone Age for a proper image. Such a man who deals with what today we'd classify as "anti-social personality disorder" (the medical name for psychopathy/sociopathy) would actually *prefer* to isolate himself; his natural "vocation" would be as a perimeter guard as it were/military lifestyle for short; he's a natural extremist: can't not be. Generally he's going to isolate himself and act as something of a border-guard to the lands of his tribe; the reason: he, when he gains the training to master this, will naturally *prefer* to exclude himself from any occasions of violence against his immediate neighbors... as for the typical image of deceit so commonplace in that: think a cloaking device of sorts: if you are not detected: you need to *not* fight. Tis right and good to isolate himself therefore from any odds of doing harm to his neighbors. Other mechanisms available to him are to restrict who has any access to him, to only those who'd be able to fend him off if he loses it. This'd merely be a cross, a mixed-up task/assignment, not even slightly evil. Now sinful conduct on the other hand: that *is* evil in and of itself, and nothing else.

#AskaFriar From a natural law perspective, is it possible for insights and advances in the empirical sciences, especially in light of statistical data, to inform new conclusions about the primacy of intimacy or love in human sexuality (especially homosexuality)? Or is the “natural law canon” closed? My question is motivated by a desire to elevate the importance of human flourishing in sexual ethics, which mandatory celibacy for all homosexual persons seems to prevent, and monogamous unions seems to advance.

On a channel for which I have the highest respect, I think it unfortunate to have the speaker sucking what looks like a chocolate milkshake or even a slightly more serious iced coffee through a straw from a plastic cup. It is apt to look more than the trifle smart-arsed, especially in the context of the topic under consideration. On the issue itself, can we acknowledge the possibility of hope through sufficiently intelligent treatment for those who, because of mental illness, seem incapable of ever being able to love? Maybe, but one can hardly deny that this seems highly unlikely in so many tragic cases. Even if it not really a special case of the problem of evil, it certainly looks like one. If God's allowing such tragedy is justified then I can only say that the justification is quite beyond my ken, and I am not sure that I would like myself if it wasn't. What enables me to continue to believe in an all good God despite this tragic and unjustifiable awfulness is that one needs recourse to a conception of goodness of such magnitude, one that can only be what we call 'God', for it to matter much in the first place. Without such transcendent goodness such tragedy would be little more than an unfortunate outcome of the mindless processes of evolution. Having made my complaint, I trust That the TI will keep up its excellent work in evangelising through the great work of St Thomas. I could only wish that my own Church of England were remotely capable of reaching such excellence of theological and philosophical communication. This is a much needed channel, and it certainly gives me hope.

@@joepisacreta3822 Indeed, Joe, and I don't want to come across as a party pooper. I simply judged that in this case the levity was somewhat misplaced. The same cool-looking 'nonesense' in an equally serious discussion of angels, for instance, wouldn't have bothered me at all. (Nor the angels, perhaps, though I don't think they are known for their sense of humour.) I suppose that I was aggravated too by the inadequacy of the answer given in this particular case, even acknowledging its necessary brevity. However, I certainly also acknowledge with joy the wisdom I see at play in these TI videos. It's a terrific resource.

A thoughtful response on a matter which has personally affected me a great deal. No one is wholly good, neither is anyone wholly bad. I feel a rethinking on the difference between classified mental illness (in which someone cannot be entirely said to be responsible for the actions, such as contemplating ot even attempting suicide) and a mental condition such as BPD or even NPD, in which others (not the sufferer themselves) are impacted by their behaviours, is now overdue. The problem of evil affects all of us, and is not exclusively reserved for those we may judge to be in some way amoral, even in their very nature. We are far, far more complex and flawed creatures to consider 'normal' v 'psychopathic behaviours as they only mirror to be held up here.

Seems to me that permitted evil for the sake of a "greater good" is misleading without a strong and clear caveat; namely a good that might be greater than would have pertained in a contingent sinful situation. Without this caveat we expose ourselves to the error of assuming a "necessary evil". God lacks no virtue from all eternity and requires no evil to achieve His greatest of all possible goods. "And not rather, as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say, Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just" (Romans 3)

The intellect is the left hemisphere of the brain, the imagination is the right hemisphere; simple as that... and *neither* of them are immaterial, nor is the memory, nor is the will- but each is strictly a part of the makeup of the brain; and rooted in Intelligent Design, not "creation" but Intelligent Design; which is the only theory that makes any sense at all. We must do away completely with the classical "christian" understanding of the soul, as that understanding is devoid of any and all grasp of reality, and go with a strictly physicalist/materialistic understanding of the mind and brain and the person, as the last of these, the materialistic, is the one that's most rooted in humility- anything else is the hubris of the devil itself coming through the teachings of the church, which means that those same teachings have to be completely obliterated for being a means for the devil to enter mankind's mindset.

Frankly, the immaterial intellect is *more* prone to change than the physiological body or brain; but I'd say, as someone who regularly deals with this *in and of himself*, on a daily basis: all it is is at worst a cross- elegance of it? Frankly, you're *more* prone to chastity, as you see the flesh as something beastial/subhuman at best... tis not pride, but rather the sure and certain knowledge that the human dwells in the individual human's mind; and only animals really are prone to acting on lust. What I *truly* have unlimited contempt for is the spirits that the Church recognizes as beings; and that is due to the stances of how the catechism condemns, rightly, speaking to them at all; yes, even by definition those in Paradise; but it does not stop there, no: everything immortal needs to die, due to how the church describes the war between good and evil. Everything immortal needs to perish for all eternity, and yes, I do mean by "perish" "cease to exist".

The Manual of Discipline, one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, says that God created two great spirits, one of truth 😇 and one of perversity 👿, the latter being the angel of darkness. 'Through the angel of darkness, however, even those who practice righteousness are liable to error. All their sin and their inequities, all their guilt and their deeds of transgression are the result of his domination; and thus, by God's inscrutable design, will continue until the time appointed by Him.'

Here are seven differences between "Ruach Elohim" and "Ruach Yahweh" as they appear in the Bible: 1. "Ruach Elohim" is first mentioned in Genesis 1:2, where it is translated as "Spirit of God." "Ruach Yahweh" is first mentioned in Judges 3:10, where it is translated as "the Spirit of the LORD." 2. "Ruach Elohim" is used throughout the Old Testament to describe the Spirit of God in general, while "Ruach Yahweh" is often used specifically in reference to the Spirit of God acting in a prophetic or empowering way, as in Judges 14:6 where Samson is "filled with the Spirit of Yahweh" to defeat a lion. 3. "Ruach Elohim" is sometimes used to describe the breath of life given to all creatures, as in Job 34:14-15 where it says that if God were to "gather back his breath [ruach]," all life would perish. "Ruach Yahweh" is not used in this sense. 4. In some passages, the two terms are used interchangeably. For example, in Isaiah 61:1, the Spirit of the Lord [Ruach Yahweh] is said to be upon the prophet, while in Ezekiel 11:5, the same phrase is translated as "the Spirit of God [Ruach Elohim] came upon me." 5. "Ruach Yahweh" is associated with the creation of humans in Genesis 2:7, where it says that Yahweh "breathed the breath [ruach] of life into [Adam's] nostrils." "Ruach Elohim" is not used in this context. 6. "Ruach Yahweh" is associated with the work of the Messiah in Isaiah 11:2, where it is said that "the Spirit of Yahweh will rest on him." "Ruach Elohim" is not used in this passage. 7. "Ruach Elohim" is used in the New Testament to refer to the Holy Spirit, as in Luke 3:22 where the Spirit descends on Jesus at his baptism "in bodily form like a dove." "Ruach Yahweh" is not used in the New Testament.

Here are seven more differences between "Ruach Elohim" and "Ruach Yahweh" in the Bible: 1. "Ruach Elohim" is used in Psalm 51:11 where David asks God not to take his Spirit away from him, whereas "Ruach Yahweh" is not used in this context. 2. "Ruach Yahweh" is associated with dreams and visions in Numbers 12:6, where it says that Yahweh spoke to Moses in a dream and a vision, "but not like [He spoke] to [His] servant Moses, who had a close relationship with [Yahweh]." "Ruach Elohim" is not used in this passage. 3. "Ruach Elohim" is used in 1 Samuel 10:10 where it says that the Spirit of God came upon Saul and he prophesied along with a group of prophets. "Ruach Yahweh" is not used in this context. 4. "Ruach Yahweh" is associated with judgment in Isaiah 4:4, where it says that Yahweh will "wash away the filth of Zion's people...by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning." "Ruach Elohim" is not used in this context. 5. "Ruach Elohim" is used in Job 33:4 where Elihu says that "the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life." "Ruach Yahweh" is not used in this passage. 6. Ruach Yahweh" is associated with the exodus from Egypt in Isaiah 63:14, where it says that "the Spirit of Yahweh led [the Israelites] through the desert." "Ruach Elohim" is not used in this context. 7. Ruach Elohim" is used in 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 where Paul speaks of the Holy Spirit revealing God's wisdom to believers. "Ruach Yahweh" is not used in this passage.

1) God is omnibenevolent and omnipotent 2) Evil has no positive content, it is the absence of goodness caused by our free will. 3) Some people with mental illnesses and character disorders cause immense evils to others and themselves without acting on the basis of free will (e.g. psychotic episode, mania, delirium, etc). At least one of these doesn't hold, and if you say it's 3) then you clearly have no clinical or personal experience with these illnesses and disorders. So I guess this is where apologists will say it's because of our "fallen nature". Which was caused by... God?
