How did our ancestors understand magic and how does this reflect their life wisdom? And is there something we have yet to learn, or rather, relearn by studying ancient occult beliefs?
In The Golden Bough, Sir James Frazer points out two basic principles of magic: ‘First, that like produces like, or that an effect resembles its cause; and, second, that things which have once been in contact with each other continue to act on each other at a distance… The former principle [is] the Law of Similarity, the latter the Law of Contact…’
Magical thinking sees a hidden dimension of reality where all objects, people, times, and places touch one another. It also sees the boundary separating the human mind from the natural world as porous and ultimately illusory.
Magic never tries to be science. It never works on the part, but always on the whole. The effects of magic cannot be measured as they do not belong to the language of measurement. Where science sees quantities, magic sees qualities. Magic can only be experienced through the heart, and when it is, there can be no doubt as to its effectiveness.

Blaise Pascal - "The heart has reasons that Reason cannot know." We ignore science & logic at our own peril, but we are much more than just science & logic.

"Science speaks in numbers, and magic in rhymes. But what is important is the art of speaking itself". I think that one phrase could be on a single video just to explain more deeply itself. When I first heard that line being said I thought, "there is more in here to be spoken than only what it is said".

Terrific work here. Your sentiments on Frazer's inability or unwillingness to reconciliate magic and science neatly coincide with my own reflections on his work-- the Golden Bough in many ways feels like the exhaustive matreialist shadow of Levi's brilliantly jubilant History of Magic-- the former's anwavering adherence to athiest doctrines informs naturally his tendency towards total acquiescence unto whatever "facts" may be distilled from man's misunderstood history; and Levi's genuine Catholic convictions tend to allow for far more sprawling (and entertaining) liberties, while also abiding by a truth far more profoundly human than what could ever pass as literature in the fields of scolastics or academia: those dogmas of orthodox "science"-- the blind and profaned priesthood of the present, to which Frazer was evidently a prophet and disciple. I respect Frazer and even admire his work, but his dismissal of magic as delusions of utter barbarism and imbecility speaks far more to his own black and vile heart than it does of the old world's ministry of cultus.

I've been asked many times, when giving meditation instruction, "what powers have you gained?" I have always done as the Buddha did, which is to say that all of that is an irrelevent distraction from what we are trying to learn and experience from meditation. In the west, emphasizing the magical seems to create more obstacles for most people, as they then have yet another thing to crave. Perhaps this is not the right approach in a world so steeped in materialism. Thank you for your insight.

Perhaps this is not the right approach... Perhaps this is just the magical approach of understanding and continuing to learn as we already are.

Great vid' ... and must say I have encountered what apprears an increase an interest in occult of late and a concern I have is the largely freeform means of expanding upon that that knowledge. Back int he day, such 'craft' lore was treated with as much respect for the power and need for responsible restraint as any warrior biased arts i.e. the psychological/physical/meta-physical cause and effect is just as causal. Also qualitatively, the fomer esoteric 'craft' lore is very much 'scientific' in approach i.e. scared geo'' (mathematics) and the phonetic resonance of carefuelly mathematically precise verse i.e. galdr (the skalds of old were sometimes genius at this) ... the whole multiverse is ultimately created as perfect pitch (perfect math) resonance 'AUM' ... everything returns to this and in turn expands from this perfect pitch.

Science is the religion of matter. I've wondered...what if the sacred sciences are buried deep within occult Symbolism and allegories/stories. Science scoffs at the stories of Gods and what not so they would never dare to look deep into the "spiritual" teachings. Maybe it's intentional...to keep the non believers out. What comes to mind is what Randall Carlson has been working on, the engine that pumps out clean air and how alot of what makes it work, is reflected in the teachings. Just my two cents, Great video!

I have to say that I really enjoyed your earlier video on Buddhism and subscribed your channel. However, I must add with cautions with regard to this video of yours on magic. Science is nothing more than observation of the physically world in which we live in. Unfortunately, most people give too much credit on the physical world (manifested) than the hidden worlds. Whilst I totally agree with you that it is foolish to compare magic with science, I must caution the obvious danger of merely worshipping the unseen worlds without understanding the good and evil of it. The heart you hold so highly is just a non-physical form but it does not necessary equate to good. We all know that our heart can harbour light or darkness. Equally the hidden world is nothing really special when you can perceive the true phenomena. What is concerning to me is the worshiping of the unseen and the unknown without questioning whether it is benevolent or not. Magic as the way you describe is nothing more than the dark forces manipulating your physical world. Generally speaking, any gain receive without much effort (your crooked heart is hardly an effort, sweat and toil is) is almost 100% of the working of the dark forces. Beware!
