Eminem did overdose the day before Hailie's birthday in 2007 (December 24th). It was a turning point for him in his life to get off drugs/pills/alcohol. And he did, he's sober now and still the best rapper/artist for me. Truly inspirational.

These two songs came out a few years after I lost my dad who killed himself with fentanyl when I was 13. Every time I listen to them it's just what I imagine would have happened if we found him a few hours earlier. And the line about Christmas is the worst, because that's the day my dad died. Eminem was my dad's favorite artist and they remind me SO much of each other. i have a tattoo of a Mockingbird for him because that was his favorite Eminem song, and he used to play it for me all the time when I was growing up.

One of my favorite songs from Em is "Headlights" where he talks about his Mom instead of Hailie. But you need "Cleanin' out my Closet" from the Slim Shady mental era first (will make Headlights hit harder), so I requested both on the doc :)

Yeah I agree, he should do at least Cleanin out my closet first, since he even mentions that song in Headlights. Some Eminem songs should be expirienced ina certain order, I just love when he mentiones old songs and albums, it gives a sense of continuity. Although I think he trashes Relapse too often on Recovery songs :D

Em really was in the hospital for one of Halie's birthdays. Him talking about screaming but it wasn't out loud, couldn't make a fist, connected to tubes etc, all talking about him being laid up and near death. This was when he was nearly 2 hours from dying from his substance addictions if I remember correct. The mentions of Relapse and Recovery were also names of 2 of his albums.

I'm so very late but Eminem did in fact write letters for Hailie. When the album these songs were on came out he did an interview and shared that he wrote letters for her that he'd hoped to give to her when she was older. Here is what he said: "When Hailie was about to be born I would always write letters that I thought maybe one day I’d give her, or you know, just to have them, and that’s kind of where the concept came from, like, let me start from the beginning and then it goes into the addiction part. The “Castle” song basically takes place in 2007, which leads to the overdose, which leads to Christmas and her birthday and me missing that because I was in the hospital. Me not being there for my kids for Christmas was tough."

I discovered Eminem about 7 months just prior to my 50th bday...like what rock was I hiding under 🤣 I started off with many of the songs you've reacted to so it's almost like watching myself on your channel as we seem to think similarly upon first reactions. I love watching your channel for that reason...it's nice to see someone else who isn't just breaking down his bars and goes deeper into his lyrics applying them to everyday situations. My best friend who I live with absolutely despises Eminem. She cannot comprehend how I, as a victim of domestic violence, can listen to an artist who "hates" women, makes songs about killing his wife etc. Watching your channel gives me an opportunity to relate to someone else who can appreciate Eminem for the absolute genius of an artist he is. So thanks for that ♥️

Thank you again, honestly! I'm someone who has battled the last few years with severe anxiety/dissociation and depression and had it under control for a year or so and I'm back fighting tooth and nail with it again for varying reasons. I've always been drawn to the insane lyrical ability, humor, humility, strength and open minded nature with which Eminem uses for his craft. His music has always helped motivate me, even when he's been at his lowest. I have never struggled with drug addiction, but suffered trauma as a young kid. I'd NEVER allow my 2 little girls (8 and 4) to experience the mental and/or physical abuse I did as a child...and though my wife (of 8 years and best friend since 4th grade) and I did ultimately decide on a divorce last year (after trying to work things out for the whole previous year). I am so proud to say that 1 year after divorce, we are as amicable as humanly possible. Not to say we never fight or argue, but the kids don't witness any of that and we coparent sensationally. I just wanted to share a small backstory into my life... With all that being said, with your background, these videos are more powerful than you can imagine. I know you get tons of requests, but the songs I think you'd most relate to are Headlights, Going Through Changes, Spacebound, Love The Way You Lie, Sing For The Moment, Legacy, 25 To Life, Not Afraid, Bad Husband, etc. I know that's a TON, but I'd love to see you eventually gravitate to all that style (they all fit in on the path you're taking already)...so in no way would I anticipate you listen to all those soon...but even if it's over a year. Just trust me, Eminem is an extremely deep artist...to witness his journey and growth from beginning to end has been an unreal honor...and these are just some of his DEEP songs. They all paint vivid pictures. These don't even include his real lyrical ability, which he often is able to show off that more in less serious songs where his mind is free to open entirely (as compared to being pinned down to a subject). TRULY sorry for this comment being so long, but thank you for using your expertise to break down and relate his music to real world issues you've seen in your profession.

Eminem has always written down his thoughts and does bring them out at later dates to see if they work in a song. I do believe this is from that collection of thoughts... so to speak. He had to learn how to do a lot of things again after his overdose! He almost stopped rapping...had to learn to write again...to rap again! He's very lucky to be here at all! But we almost lost "The G.O.A.T." ! Very glad we didn't! His songs have helped me through a lot of bad times! Funny too...I'm six yrs older than he is and didn't start listening to him until after my divorce at 42 yrs old! lol

Eminem has been at the very bottom, with nothing but the air in his lungs, and the will to put one foot in front of the other, and that can be the hardest thing to do when you feel like you've nothing left, all of your spirit has been squashed. I've been there, it's like you're treading water, but it's not water, it's quicksand, all you need is some love and someone to help you find yourself again. I'm indebted to those around me who stood by my side, and I'm indebted to the better part of me, the part of me that showed some faith gave me some strength to pick myself up again. My life has never been easy, I've never been handed anything, It's been battle after battle, All i can ever do is pick myself up off of the floor and try to stand up straight and keep on making myself push on forwards.

His mother is still alive. His feelings about her went from cleanin out my closet (and other songs in his younger age) to headlights. Some of the people he mentions and just some of his relations Debbie- his mother Hallie Jade, he calls her by both names both most often Hallie, daughter, Aliana (lainey) oldest daughter who he adopted Whitney or now Stevie his youngest now no longer a daughter is also adopted. Nathan- his younger brother who he got out of foster care and gain legal custody over Ronnie- his uncle, who killed himself, and then Proof or Doody as others have already mentioned. And yeah all the rappers who came before him he looks up to and respect, some who came after him he respects. (and he also mentions a lot he doesn't respect) Super heroes, politicians, and serial killers. That is just the basic knowledge level.. :D I really have come to enjoy your reactions, your openness towards music.

@@ReactionTherapyOfficial sorry re reading it, it seems a little messy, I was not 100 procreant focused when I wrote it, but I hope that you were able to make som sense of it. knowing who he is referencing is always a handful. Having listen to him for around 20 years I have a good grab for his personal references but being non American, some of the pop cultural references or the always popular serial killer is usually a struggle. No thank you for a different perspective on reacting to music. I have been in therapy especially for my anxiety and depression and growing up nobody talked about it or addressed it. It wasn't something middle class teenagers in Scandinavia could experience. Eminems frustration, anger and struggle to fit in resonated with me despite our life paths otherwise in no shape or form can be compared. So he holds a very special place in my heart and it is enjoyable when others appreciate him too.

I loved your reaction. I don't remember which ones you've done, but since you are so good with these relationship songs, Cleaning Out My Closet is a great one to do about his relationship with his mother. It's followed up something like a decade later by Headlights. A song about his baby's mother is Kim - remember when you talked about writing things down for catharsis? Yeah, he does that, then he just happened to put it on one of the best selling albums of all time. It's very, very dark. It's actually the prequel to 97 Bonnie and Clyde (which I think you will find even more disturbing - I do - great art, both of them, but very disturbing) which is about his relationship with his daughter. A recent song about his father is Leaving Heaven - a lot of anger here. Hallie's Song is one about his daughter - I find it very sweet, for the most part. Remember, his kids turned out very well adjusted by all accounts, lol.

Love your Eminem reactions. I was 9 years old when I first heard Eminem in 1996 when my friend Mark moved from Detroit to southeastern Ohio. He had Eminem's Infinite cassette tape, and I've been a fan ever since. I'm 35 now and his music has literally saved my life through my pre-teen and teenage years when I was going back and forth between in custodies between my mom and my aunt. My mom wasn't abusive or anything, but she was negligible and my 2 older brothers (6 and 5 years older) were ain constant trouble. My oldest brother was mean towards me, he would hit me, call me names, and was always in and out hall houses, JDC, halfway houses, and my other brother was sent to prison at 16 until he was 24 for armed robbery. My dad had moved away when I was 7 to Northern Indiana and I only saw him one Saturday each year as Friday was the 7 hour drive up and Sunday was a 7 hour drive back home, and he was also an alcoholic, which he ended up dying from in 2011. Between the custody battles, my brothers, an absent and alcoholic father and being dragged along with my mom and her friends while they partied and shit, by the time I became a teenager, I was close to being a troubled child myself and had suicidal thoughts, even attempted it twice at 14...but it was Eminem's music, his honesty, his rage and his passion that kept me on the straight and narrow path and that stopped me from attempting a 3rd suicide attempt. Although I had listened to Eminem since I was 9 and was a fan, I didn't get heavy into his music until I was 13 or 14. I felt like he was venting for, not only himself, but for every kid and teenager who was going through hard times. He gave us a voice, hope and a way out of the darkness. I owe my life and the decision to break the broken home, crime and drug addict cycle that enveloped my family to him and his music. For me Arose is an absolute masterpiece and the most realist, rawest and honest song he has ever put on wax.

Awesome reaction guys!!!! So glad you did these two tracks together! I’m sure others will have explained Proof/DeShaun/Doody - Em’s best friend growing up and his original ‘hype man’ when he made it, as well as being 1/6th of D12 - after Em,he was probs the most talented of the group. He was shot in a snooker/pool room on front of Em, hence the ‘slumped over the table’ reference. Em references Proof in loads of tracks and has also said his addiction really spiralled after he died - and I think it was bad enough before that happened. Em has a track with Yelawolf called ‘Best Friend’ that references religion and Proof as being their ‘best friends’, Em’s verse on it is amazing and it’s interesting to see him on a track like this. He has only mentioned his faith a small number of times, but I know this was something he connected with during and after his recovery. I had a feeling we’d get some Eminem on mystery week - but two in one video?! It’s early morning and snowing in Scotland just now, I’ve got a horrendously busy day ahead at work, my child care has let me down and I’m running late for my morning meeting lol! I really needed a little lift this morning - this totally delivered!!! Thank you Tom and Nick! 🙏

Just had to add that he wasn't shot in front of Em, they were nowhere near each other at the time as Proof was with another person nicknamed Mudd, and he was announced DOA meaning Eminem probably never got to say goodbye as he assumed they'd see each other again the last time they'd been together. The falling over the table is either metaphorical or possibly in the hospital.

@@theronis ahh, thanks Theronis, I appreciate you letting me know. I should’ve known it wouldn’t be as straightforward as a ‘literal table’ - it’s Em we’re talking about lol! It’s really difficult to find information about the incident generally - I suppose it’s going back a few years now, even though there was still a lot of info in the public domain, it’s nothing compared to what we have now!

@@scottishemmaa2457 definitely! although i seem to remember having found a few articles that seem to detail it quite clearly, it's still a lot less than it would be now. and yep, definitely, he's seldom straightforward haha

@@theronis I think the falling over the table is referencing the video to "Like Toy Soldiers", where Proof acts as Buggs and gets fake-shot and lies fake-bleeding on the operation-table. If I were in Eminem's position, I'd sure as hell blend those two things together even when I'm not close to dying.

Currently dealing with my mom and dad's divorce. 25yrs finally came to an end. I'm learning how to have healthy boundaries with my family, never realizing I needed it. My father is showing his true colors, maybe they're not permanent, but I fucking hate what I see. I can't respect him. I just keep moving forward, and only invest in the people in my life that actually give a fuck. It's been strange to navigate. Thanks for your channel! ❤️

I might be wrong but I think he’s saying „Doodie“ or „Doody“ or something like that which is a nickname for his best friend proof who got shot back in 2006 and not „Judy“, when he was talking about leaning over his body I don’t think he was talking about him dying next to him, I think he might’ve been talking about having to identify him postmortem, Em actually has a few songs about Proofs death and what it meant to him like „You’re never over“
@cathy2615
@cathy2615 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah and also this could be reference to Like Toy soldier, in video Proof's dying on operating table. i can't imagine how diffcult it's for Em to even acknowledge this song, like he could choose anyone from D12 to play that part but he picked Proof and then he died 2 years later in similar way.

Doody is the name him and Proof, his best friend had for each other. He was shot and killed in a club in 2006 causing Em's addiction to spiral further
@isaacgroffman4938
@isaacgroffman4938 2 жыл бұрын
So he is actually saying “doody” not “Judy”. Eminem is referencing his childhood best friend DeShaun Holton whose rap name was Proof. Proof grew up with Eminem and was a part of Eminem’s rap group D12. Proof would also always tour with Eminem and perform with him. In 2006 Proof was shot and killed in a nightclub. Although the details aren’t completely clear there was a dispute over a game of Pool which led up in a violent argument and resulted in Proof getting shot. This is why in Arose Eminem references having visions of proof “at that table” meaning the Pool table. In the aftermath of this Eminem had visions about Proof's death and felt guilty about it even though he wasn’t there. This Is why Eminem says he was not able to save Proof. If you want to learn more about Eminem’s relationship with Proof check out “Difficult” it was the song Eminem wrote immediately after Proofs funeral and where Eminem shares his raw and unfiltered emotions that he was feeling at the time. It would be very interesting to see you, as a therapist, react to this song as it deals with PTSD and survivors guilt.

I saw on the thumbnail preview that this reaction is about a Revival song, I had to click on it, since I'm a big fan of that album. And it's 2 of the best songs imo on that album :) Btw you mentioned that you would like to interview Eminem. There is an interview on YT that goes through a lot of different topics. It's the Kamikaze Interview, which is about stuff he talked on that album, so I guess you should check it out after you've reacted to all the Kamikaze songs (which isn't much, since that album is one of the shortest). I mean it's not the same as interviewing him yourself but I think it's also interesting to see him talk regularly about these topics, not just with rhymes and stuff :D

"The more I learn about Eminem the more I want to listen to Eminem" ::: Oh yes - this is why I quite suddenly became not just an occasional listener but full-on fan within months (and only so very recently, I shamefully admit) If you're interested, there's some very good interviews from/with him on youtube. One of the best, I think, is from 2018 with LL Cool J (of whom Eminem is a HUGE fan) on LLs radio-show (listen to that without headphones because the mixing is weird but it's worth it) and there's some good and long ones with Sway (radio host on Shade 45). There's also good ones on "Crook's Corner" and the famous "Kamikaze-" Interview and those are good, too, but you get a bit more glimpses about personal things on the others. Here's the links - I can't quite remember which says what for all of them, but I'll post them in chronological order kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7WAbKeTkq3Ydo0.html - 2013 about the MMLP2 album kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pduTf5do2pq0opc.html - 2014 (1 hour) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sM2RqNeQsrmoaIk.html - 2015 (one of my favorite) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6thaM2myZi5pIE.html - 2017 abut the Revival-album (before it came out - important to know) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bclif8ueyqqplY0.html - 2018 the LL Cool J interview (after Revival came out, before the Kamikaze album) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdeYZt1_zamZe5s.html - 2018 the „Kamikaze-Interview“ after the Kamikaze-album was out

My mother was the closest person to me and the worst part is she took her own life purposely and to have to watch her take her last breath was devastating.. the sperm donor overdosed on accident.. not even a year after my wedding I was only 23 at the time. Only my oldest will have any memory of her.. so sad, my middle child was only a year and a half and my youngest wasn't born until after :(. My step dad just passed away this past June. So I had lost all 3 parents by 30 years old...
