Pure poetry. As so many people say- you have to watch the original video where James is singing to his father ❗️ The strength you see in his father is stunning- the Colonel was dying at the time they filmed it. Having donated a kidney himself he only had one kidney at 11% function- and yet he is comforting his son. James said in an interview that everyone in the studio was crying except his father, who said "Why are you all crying- I'm still here"

I watched him in an interview about this song. He and his father both were commissioned officers in the Royal Army. They grew up with the British "stiff upper lip" and being military officers to boot, they didn't talk about feelings. So he wrote a song to say what he wanted to say to his dad.

You might want to hear the one with his dad. I is gut wrenching. You will appreciate it much more as James is highly emotional in it.

The Official Video shows James and his father, and he's singing this to him. They had been, I would think, stressed and sad. James's father had been a kidney donor, but he developed kidney disease, stage four himself. A long, lost cousin came forward after hearing about "Monsters". So far it's a happy ending to an amazing song!
@jamesroyce1845 Жыл бұрын
The 'official video' is so raw and expressive, it rips your heart out and stomps it on the floor with it's power. I never had a dad in my life but becoming a dad (and grandpa) were defining points in my life. This song brings me to tears because it reminds me that I'm going to have to leave them some day and I miss them already.
@jeffstevens42622 жыл бұрын
Just bit of background...James and his father were both officers (tank commanders) in the British military, and emotions were very rarely shared between them, but when James' dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney failure, he wrote this song. The music video you see was recorded exactly as you see it. James wanted it to be absolutely real, and authentic, and that's why he's so emotional. Thankfully his father found a donor eventually, and survived but when the song was written, everyone thought his dad was going to struggle to find a donor. All the proceeds from this record were donated by James to the UK's wonderful charity for ex-servicemen and servicewomen 'Help For Heroes' who do such amazing work. James is a wonderful man and I know his dad must be very proud of him.

This song makes me cry every single time. I’m kind of relieved that you chose this video rather than the actual music video. The emotion on his and his fathers face kills me. Especially since I recently lost my mother but I still always watch reactions to it. I’d really love to see your reaction to “The father, my son and the Holy Ghost” Craig Morgan. It’s similar to this but it’s about his son that passed away

Lyrically, I appreciate how he tries to distance himself "We're just two grown men saying goodbye" bu then he refers to his father as Daddy - he can't keep the distance, it is very personal, no matter how he tries to make that distance.
@wordswritteninred71712 жыл бұрын
And to me, in that distance, is an admission that they are so much more than just father and son. Best friends. They grew past that relationship to something deeper. Equal footing. To, the son being the one in charge, to chase the monsters away.

It's what his father and he said used to say when they were being deployed as his dad was colonel in the British Army and he was a captain and one of the first into Kosovo ...listen to no bravery 💕
@firstinthedance Жыл бұрын
James said in an interview that that line had to do with moving beyond the roles of father/son to a place of being equals and friends, but I think he was also reassuring his dad that he'd be ok if it was time to go. So many times our parents/loved ones will struggle to hang on, despite being in terrible pain, for us. My mom died of cancer, with me at her bedside, telling her that I love her, but it was ok to let go. That I was grown up, and I'd be alright. As much as I still miss her 7 years later, there was still a sense of relief when she transitioned, because her suffering had finally ended after 2 years of struggling to beat it. It is terrible to watch someone you love suffer for your sake.

The complex of emotion here is astounding. His father and he both served in the forces, and fought in some rather unpleasant conflict. His father earlier donated his kidney to somebody who needed it. Now he has no backup and none of his children, including James, were a match, in his stage 4 kidney condition. James wrote the song and out of nowhere a young man, with the same last name, was tested to see if he was a match. He was, he was a many points removed cousin, and Colonel Charles Blunt received a transplant in late 2020. Capt James Blunt donated all the money from the song to Help For Heroes and the Royal British Legion.

In this difficult world I still love life and continue to try and be the best person I can be x

I lost my mother last year and I am very glad that we have been very close for the past six months. It was difficult and painful, but we were able to say goodbye with great love and peace. Of course, this experience makes me feel this song in a completely different way. That goes pretty deep. Mom's last words to me were that she loves me and that she apologizes for not being able to say anything comforting. I told her she was a great mom and I was all grown up now and she didn't have to worry about me. She may go in peace. I will never forget Mother's smile at my words.

Why didn't you watch the official video? It was done in one take and since it starts out with just a head shot of James, you don't realize that his father is sitting beside him while he is singing. He wouldn't let his producers use auto tune or do any cuts and editing. When he finished everyone except his father was crying. He father asked why everyone was crying, he was still here.

His father Charles is in the official video. He allowed James to make it so he had something of him to keep. There was only one take and no auto tune. At the time Charles only had weeks left, he had last stage kidney disease. James and his sisters were not a match but releasing that song found a cousin they didn’t know about who was a match. Also named Charles. Charles had donated a kidney when he was younger. Then the second one failed. Both James and Charles were Officers in the Military. You did not get the real emotion from the video you watched.

Hi Reaction Therapy, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your reactions to these songs. It's funny, a few have been songs that I have listened to for years and I know the all the lyrics, but watching you react has given new life to these memorable songs. Also, I am a huge fan of James Blunt and would recommend "Same Mistake" or "Tears and Rain". About this video, James Blunt's father was diagnosed with stage IV End Stage Renal Failure and needed a transplant. James, in fact, wrote this to his own father while he was awaiting a transplant and thankfully his father received a new kidney and is doing fine now. Should you watch the original music video, his father is in the video which brings another layer of depth as well. A little background about James Blunt, he was in the Royal Army for many years and left the military to pursue a career in music. You will find he also sings about war and military-based topics sometimes. He's an amazing performer. One last request, I know most of the songs are rap that you react to, but since you did James Blunt I have one request: the song "Fairytales and Firesides" by Passenger (my all time favorite artist). I have listened to the song for years and still do not know entirely what it is about. I have attended 3 concerts of his and wanted to ask him, but never got the chance to talk to him after the show. Anyway, thank you for all you do.

Just a brief background - James Blunt wrote this when they found out his father had stage 4 cancer in his kidneys and no donor could be found. After releasing this song, thousands of people responded by offering their own. Later they found a distant cousin was compatible and he had the surgery and is doing ok now.. Coincidently, the cousin's name was also James Blunt. His father is recovered now. Both James and his father were decorated Army officials.

The official video would have been such a better first reaction. It was when it was first performed for his father and when he still thought his father was about to die. The vocals are not only more raw, but better I think. Even though I've seen it quite a few times, I still get choked up watching that video. I do like the way you mentioned how the concepts portrayed through the song could be extrapolated out and applied to other life experiences. It reminded me of a conversation I had with my childhood self as an adult to "say goodbye" to a childhood trauma.
