From what I read about this guy he was a total sociopath, he fought his execution till he minute he died, he was never remorseful of his crimes. I don’t consider myself a strong proponent of the death penalty, but In some cases like this I think it’s appropriate. I believe there are people in this world who are purely wicked and the people have the right to take them out.

He even ran a drug ring and exploited his fellow inmates behind bars. He had no remorse whatsoever.

The fact that the Govenor took the time to visit Campbell, tells me he was open to considering a stay of execution with the possibility of commuting his sentence to life without parole. My guess though is that Campbell showed no sincere remorse (or any) to the Govenor and as such the Govenor left with the firm conviction that the death penalty was indeed the appropriate punishment. Very few death row inmates ever get the chance to meet the Govenor who has the power to change the sentence, Campbell did and clearly whatever he said was not sufficient to warrant mercy. He got what he deserved.

That's an interesting thought that I had not considered before. I've always been against capital punishment not only because of the very real possibility of wrongful conviction that the appeals process rarely corrects when it happens, but also for punishment sake. I believe that life imprisonment when properly administered to a murderer is a much harsher penalty than execution. And by properly administered, I mean they don't get free run of the place to jump and laugh and dance Outdoors, have sex with other inmates and do blow like Richard Speck did. Now there was a life imprisonment that was not properly administered. He said himself that they would let him go if they knew how much fun he was having on the inside. But the thought of innocent people still being at risk of harm by such a person was not something I'd ever considered. I still haven't changed my position on the death penalty because of the wrongful conviction possibility but I'm now about to eliminate the punishment aspect from my reasoning from this point forward. Fuck punishment if it gives them the opportunity to murder another innocent victim. Prison guards can be piece of shit tyrants and criminals in their own right but I choose to believe they are not all that way.

First of all, there are bars on a cell. If a prisoner is being unruly, lock them in their cell. 70 to75% of all prisoners are there for at least a second time. Giving them books makes them smarter criminals, giving them exercise equipment makes them stronger criminals. And you pay for it. Secondly, they are there to be punished, not entertained. Do you ground your children by giving them movies to watch? No, so why would you with an adult criminal? Bring back the chain gangs to occupy them!

It costs around $45,000 per prisoner per year to house feed and clothe. They all get the same appeal process, so that is moot. Almost all killers can't afford a lawyer, so they get a PD who is on salary by the state costing the same regardless of sentence, so that is moot too. An execution costs less than $20,000. Do the math... 45,000 for 30 years (life sentence) is $1,350,000. 20 years on death row is $900,000 plus exectution is less than $920,000. Last time I checked, 920,000 was less.

What I don't understand is, that the trap door opened at 12:08 AM and he was pronounced dead by the Prison Physician at 12:14 AM. that is six minutes from the time of initial drop to impact and he lingered for an estimated six minutes. If the procedure was conducted thoroughly and his weight and height registered and if the executioner used the prescribed British Drop Chart and proper placement of the rope just under the hinge of the left jaw; he should have died within twenty to twenty two seconds after initial impact at the time of the drop separating spinal columns L1 and L2 four inches below the base of the skull and an estimated five inches below the patulitary gland at the very base of the spinal cord just off the rear of the brain tissue. Explain to me why it took six minutes from the time of the drop till initial impact for the condemned to perish? If the procedure was conducted with the up most professionalism by the executioner, the condemned regardless of folding board should have died in twenty two seconds maximum. Seems as though Washington State needs to study British Hanging Procedures when conducting executions by hanging. The Prisoner should be weighed, measured in height and the drop chart should be employed with the length of rope measured for the drop and the rope stretched taught for twenty four hours prior to the execution date and time.
@bigships Жыл бұрын
With The British drop table you would expect a result similar whilst the brain is dead the heart beats on for 4-6 minutes
@auggith Жыл бұрын
the average for judicial hanging by long drop is 8-15 minutes. by that number, he died quickly. from what i understand, the 20 second marker is the average for brain death. as we know, a person can still be physically alive while brain dead. so by this logic, we can assume that he was brain dead by the 22 second mark, and then his heart oficially stopped beating 6 minutes after. it is often portrayed that hanging can be an instant death, which is scientifically impossible unless the noose takes off the head (then again, the time frame of beheading is a whole different matter). anyway, unconsciousness should theoretically be instant. death with follow anywhere between 5-20 minutes afterwards, almost always preceded by brain death around 20 seconds after the drop.

Court costs are determined by the length of the trial, not the sentence. All prisoners have the same amount of appeals. do the math and it takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to house, feed, clothe, and entertain (TV, Books, etc.) a prisoner. A rope only costs a few dollars. Even the most expensive form of execution (lethal injection) is only a few hundred dollars worth of drugs and equipment, which is less than what we spend in a week on a prisoner.

A coward to the end. How could he not relate to the empathy of the fear from the people he killed? He shit himself and had to be dragged to the Gallows so he knows the fear of death and still he killed 3 people.
@pennjd111 жыл бұрын
#1 The statistics prove otherwise. It cost the same for a death row inmate as it does a non-death row inmate to house, feed, clothe and run the appeals process. It costs more to keep a death row inmate alive because it requires more guards. So for the same amount of time a death row inmate costs the state more to keep alive. Then if he is put to death, that is after usually no more than 20 years. Compare those costs with an inmate sentenced to life which would be at least 30 years.

The are to date five prescribed methods of execution, currently available & in operation in the US, depending on the of the preferred option(s) of the State in question & also the Federal Government (Including the Armed Services). They are as follows: Hanging, Lethal Injection, Gas Chamber, Electric Chair & the Firing Squad. Presently, 37 States have the death penalty option on their statute books, plus the Federal Government & 13 States retain life imprisonment sentence, as an alternative to Capital Punishment after its abolition in their States.

All prisoners regardless of sentence have the same appeals so you take that out. Court costs are the same for the same amount of time, a public defender gets paid the same rate regardless of the charges and most people can't afford a lawyer, so take that cost out. All that is left is housing costs and execution costs. Prison costs roughly $45,000 per prisoner per year. An execution includes the cost of the method and burial, roughly $20,000. OMFG execution costs less than one year imprisonment!!

I have always found it quite odd that many convicted death row prisoners seem to follow all commands leading up to the death chamber,to the point where it is considered the norm,even stories of convicts actively assisting & offering consoling & calming words to those about to kill them,I find it odd if a death row inmate did not fight until the end!

The problem with this issue is that too many innocent people die due to problems inherent in the system. I am all for capital punishment, but reserved for cases where there is undeniable guilt proven such as catching a mass or serial killer in the act itself. John Wayne Gacy, Jeffery Dahmer, and Ted Bundy are perfect examples where the death penalty is not only justified, but also required. George killing Herman in a crime of passion is not grounds in my opinion.

Confinement in the death house is more expensive, so 1 year on death row costs $90,000 more than a normal prisoner. This is due to the extra security required and the higher ratio of guards per prisoner. Then you've got the extra days in court, as they (generally) use every appeal they've got. Adds up to way more than LWOP.

The facts of cost you mention are wrong. I accordance with law, every prisoner has the same right to appeals regardless of death or life sentence. Every prisoner is allowed three meals a day, so the cost per day in food, and housing is the same. Every cost you can come up with is the same per day for both except for the execution itself. Now with that a death sentence carried out after 10 to 15 years is far cheaper than the 20 or more years of life imprisonment. It is a matter of doing the math.

No sympathy for this murderer. I’m sure the victims did not want to die . Justice served.

Death penalty need be done... American justice needs it.for worst of the worst

Not bullshit. You're missing the point: the right of appeal exists to establish - as far as possible - who the "true killers" are. An irreversible sanction such as the death penalty requires the very highest evidenciary standards. Quite apart from the fact that it is barbaric (and ineffective - witness the far lower murder-rates of abolitionist Europe), the death penalty always involves the risk of killing an innocent person. It has happened.

Every state should have hanging. With modern calculations it is quick and even has a lesser botch rate to lethal injection. No need to go through the hassle of buying drugs.

@TheScrawnyboy I'm a conservative Christian, just a friendly reminder that it's not what goes in your mouth that defiles you but what comes out. Jesus does not rejoice when anyone goes to hell.

Nobody deserves to be tortured forever, especially for being born in a country that has the "wrong religion." I'm sorry, but your religion is bat shit insane for so many of its beliefs and that's why it mostly exists in places like Mississippi and Kansas where the average IQ is about in the high 80s.

Yeah, I thought it was strange a large advanced state like Washington would have that. It was usually a small number of Bible thumper states with small populations

That one lady says think of the innocent people that have been wrongfully executed. That is nothing compared to the victims that this man has executed. And their families that suffer everyday because of this man. And the fact of the matter is no you don't have to be there.
@pennjd111 жыл бұрын
And who pays for it? Yes, you the taxpayer. I want prison to be prison, take away the TV and cable (they are being punished, not rewarded), take away the gym (they don't need to be a stronger criminal), take away the books (they don't need better job opportunities than the law abiding citizen).

I accept and understand anyone saying "Justice served". I don't know what sort of noose is used nowadays. The old Wild West noose was placed at the back of the neck (sub-occipital) causing the head to be thrown forward and asphyxiation to occur. Has been known for 30-45 mins before life is pronounced extinct. The former UK system used a running loop placed at the sub-aural (below the ear) or the sub-mental (below the jaw) causing the head to be jerked back. As I say, death was instantaneous (usually about 0.7 seconds) due to the fracture of the spinal cord between 2nd/3rd vertebrae and the rupture of the jugular vein/carotid artery causing an immediate and fatal loss of blood pressure. Also the stopping of the action of the vagus nerve (vagal inhibition) which acts on the heart and lungs although this is difficult to pick up even in a post-mortem exam.

Hanging, in the USA? Hmmmm. That's a new one on me.
@SFVnative2 жыл бұрын
@@WindDancer435--Yes, there were about half a dozen states that used it, usually backward Bible thumper states. It's hard to understand why a state like Washington would; it's one the centers of the computer industry and has a lot of rich professional people.

I had no idea they had hanging in Seattle not so long ago, sounds like a real pain in the neck, seems unusual the green river killer never got the death penalty, he killed around 50.
