Sean, the Garden Guru here at The Gardener's Center, is an expert at growing tomatoes in containers. Follow his proven rules and you'll be harvesting tomatoes all summer long.
It starts with the right size pot, then the recommended soil, fertilizer and how they get mixed together. Then there's the right way to stake your plant and container so it doesn't topple over later. Follow Sean's guidance, make sure you water properly and let the 'mater makin' begin!
Make sure you catch Part 2 in this series to see the same plant's growth one month later PLUS an essential pruning guide.

I have been growing tomatoes in pots for over 30 years, with great success. I do everything as you recommend with 1 exception. In each pot I plant 1 basil plant and it goes super well. If the pot is big enough they don't bother each other at all and the basil protects the tomato plant from white fly.

This method is very similar to what I do with tomatoes in containers, especially fabric grow bags. A slight modification I’ve found helpful is to bend out the legs of the tomato cages slightly so that they enter the soil more perpendicular to the soil. Secondly I also use the longer stakes but I pass them inside the top of cages past the top ring but outside the second ring down to the soil also in a near perpendicular position. I secure the cage to the stakes at the top. We have terrible winds here on the Texas southern gulf coast especially in March and April. By this time our plants have set fruit and are very tall.

Great video! I have come home to find my 5 gal buckets knocked over. Since then I've moved to 18 gal tubs. How come cherry tomatoes don't get blossom end rot?

Thank you! Yes bigger is always better as far as pots go. I've only seen blossom end rot on cherry tomato varieties a handful of times in the past 30 years. I suspect that their small size and the speed at which they develop makes them somewhat "immune" to it. Thanks for watching!

And they do get blossom end rot but only when very wet all the time.

Hey, Sean, what would you think about putting that cage upside down, kind of nestled in, then maybe it would not topple over?

You can do it that way. You'd want to anchor it in securely though. Long landscape staples, the kind you would use to keep weed block fabric in place, or sections of wire coat hangers bent into U shapes could do the trick. Thanks for watching!

No mulch?
@TheGardenersCenter

You can use heat pasteurized straw or hay if you would like to as a mulch, but avoid using wood based products. They tend to lower soil Ph making it too acidic for tomatoes to perform well.
