Pt. Ravi Shankar meets Paco de Lucia and the two great maestros discuss about the relations between Indian Classical music and Flamenco.
Though a short and widespread discussion that Flamenco scales have similarities with raga Bhairavi (Panditji points out Sindhi Bhairavi which is misunderstood and written "Paravi") it gets importance when the two great artists talk about some common roots.
[This is a fact that the Phrygian Dominant scale or the Gypsy scale has resemblance with different forms of Bhairavi and also with other Indian folk tunes.
The gypsies are possibly responsible about this cultural travel.]
I found that Pt. Ravi Shankar and Paco de Lucia have some things common in their life too.
1) Both of them have popularized their art almost alone in the West especially in U.S.A. {No offence to other artists but I mean what names come to a foreign mind while hearing about Indian Classical music or Flamenco!!!}
2) Both of them started their career playing with their elder brothers' association. Ravi Shankar started in his elder brother Uday Shankar's group and Paco de Lucia started with his brothers accompanying in José Greco's group.
3) Both the groups (of Uday Shankar and José Greco) were presented by Sol Hurok as the impresario.
May you find some more ................

How interesting it is that Ravi's daughter, Anoushka, made an album dedicated to the relations between raag and flamenco as well.

It's a remarcable point the fact that a great artist, a great musician, master on his instrument, can have the humbleness to stare, fascinated , the way other artist shows his art. I can't think of many artists being capable of showing admiration with genuine curiosity. A very domesticade ego is needed, obviously.

Return thanks to those who thanked me for the video description. I am trying to answer those who asked few questions. Pandit ji is playing Raga Bhairavi in Drut teentaal. Tabalia is Ud Alla Rakha (father of Ud Zakir Hussain). Flamenco has more resemblance with Rajasthani Gypsy folk songs than Indian Classical music. They sing few basic ragas and use 'khartal' which has resemblance with castanet playing. (Watch the gypsies of Rajasthan video from my channel) Though only the "chalan" of Bhairavi is used in Flamenco but the Rajasthani gypsies use other ragas like Yaman and Khammaj. The scale used in Flamenco is Phrygian Dominant which is not Bhairavi but Basant mukhari (in North india) and Vakulavarnam (in South India). But the ambience is like Bhairavi specially in the Avarohan. Those who want to see them playing together..... Pandit ji is not a fusion musician. He restricted himself to pure Indian classical playing but has composed fusion tracks as well as for Sitar concertos. He only played in one fusion track in his life in Tana Mana called West Eats Meat as per my knowledge.

that indina music and flamenco have comon roots is no secret. It is well known that the gypsy ethnic came from india to eurpe in the middle ages, there are documents in spain that certify that. At least in spain in school, that is general knowledge.

I think the arb music is more close to flamenco da the indian... yet the phrygian dominant is the key that joins all different styles : flamenco + arab + indian . It´s like the DNA essence and from that different moods and styles developed... but the indian music has some really particular things that make it even more complex

¿Quien, a pronunciar tu nombre Sin llorarte, intentaría?

Since the Indian culture in music is probably the oldest this civilization has, that thing that Raviji embraces is probably what most stringed instruments today are evolved from. When the Roma were expelled from India they took their music and their instruments with them to spread around the world. The modern guitar probably had its roots with them. The English word "rag" is derived from the Indus word for color. I might be wrong about all this but I'm gonna run with it anyway. Run being the finality of a raga.
@SobersChatterjee
@SobersChatterjee 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Indian music and culture influenced other cultures.. but few things I would like to mention. The Romani people were mainly folk musicians and they took the basic ragas and talas (which I have explained in another comment on why Flamenco sounds familiar to Indians) and if you watch the film Latcho Drom (1993) where it's beautifully shown the kind of similarities they share altogether. Though the director hasn't explained even a bit about the scales or the rhythms still the similarity will haunt everyone. Lastly Sitar is actually the old Saraswati veena only modified so yes it has a long history but the strings here are pulled to produce notes. Guitar on the other hand is fretted and it has a fingerboard so it's from Lute family. So I think the mother instrument is Rabab which evolved to Lute then to Cittern and then to Guitar..
