Making a new Nuc with swam cells doesn’t have to be hard. This video shows the way we do it with a couple of frames. As long as you have all the necessary ingredients you are on the way to making a new Nuc.
Don't forget to check Pt2 with the Nuc.

Just watched this, it was great, thanks so much! I am looking forward to Spring and warmth, as I expect you are. Plan to do a few splits as lost a couple of colonies over winter. 😊

Very welcome and thank you, yes looking forward to the new season. Sorry to hear you have lost colonies but it does happen unfortunately. 🐝

The new queens will not mate with drones from their own hive so no need to include them purposely with your split. Solid video otherwise! By the way, you can also cut around a capped queen cell and attach to another frame. I cut about half an inch around the cell. Carefully take the cell and gently push a part of the area you cut around the cell into the comb of the new frame.

Hi Temijin, thanks for comment, yes you are right. I have cut cells and used them but for this vid it was not really needed. 😊🐝

Pretty lucky to have the queen in when there are capped queen cells - as a rule, the queen has already departed

Hi Julian, true but not always the case in some hives. If you can still see fresh eggs you most likely have time. But for the purpose of the video, the swarm cells were left a little to use. 🐝

I am thinking the queen leaving when there are capped queen cell is mythology. I have seen capped queen cells and the queen in hives. I do move the capped cells with a frame of bees to nuc boxes to create more colonies.

Hi, many thanks. How far away did you move the nuc. Do you have any general advice on distances when splitting hives?
@berintanbees
@berintanbees 7 ай бұрын
Hi, if it’s in the same apiary it’s no problem. I moved the new nuc 2 meters from the main hive. If you are to move the nuc further to a new location, close it up with sticks and grass, once placed in new location pull a little bit of the grass out so the bees are occupied trying to clear the hive entrance. They will start orientation flights, learning their new hive location. 🐝

Hi, Just a quick question, I had a very calm hive which I have recently split and now both hives have become very agressive. Is this normal? And will they calm down when the new queen takes control of one of them?

Lots of things can trigger a hive to turn, sometimes it sort’s itself out. I find when a hive has no queen they can be more on edge. Once the new hive settles down with a new queen see how they are with the new generation. The weather can affect them also, look for robbing going on there are so many variables. If your hive posits being nasty you may want to re Queen. Give them a little time 🐝

Yes ! they are nice Queen Cells. But please, be more careful on handling the frames. Never turn upside-down an Q.C after she is caped ( unless you know that this is the 11th day of Queen development.)

Yes this hive was left a little longer for established queen cells. But yes that is a good practice to keep in mind. 🐝

Hi Yvonne, it really depends on the bees, I try not to over smoke them. So just enough to move them out the way and calm them if needed. 😊🐝

Hi Gray, no in fact she is going strong. As long as you know what you are doing in a situation like this, not all Queens will leave. 🐝

Would be a better Video if you had WiFi Clip Micros see Richard Noel Brittany Bees YT Vids. He has the best Audio. All I hear here is agitated Bees ! Just saying ... Sorry, not much of a learning tool for New Beeks without better Voiceover, or Subtitle prompts. 🤔

Yes audio via mic would be better, early days still. But then, if you are in an open beehive you are going to hear bees. 🙂

Thanks for Reply : good point. Bees make Buzzy noise when opening up a Hive.... 😏 But as a Learning Tool Video Part 1 and Part 2 should be supported by on screen Text and or Points to what's been 'shown'. We can always see Visuals but if you don't understand what your watching as a Newbie Beek : it isn't much of a learning aid. Another Beek with great screen graphics is David Burns a USA YT Beek. 👀

Hi Leandro, I was in the hive quite a long time and the bees as nice as they are were starting to all come back from foraging. With nowhere to go they had to bee moved from the frames and calmed a little. 🐝😊
