When the P-83 pistol went into production, the Polish military decided that it wanted a dedicated suppressed version of the gun, and the result was the PT-83. Thw P-83 was a 9x18mm pistol with a fixed barrel, so attaching a suppressor was not going to cause any problems with functioning. However, the designers wanted to have the slide remain closed when firing, and to do something more than just extend the barrel and thread on a suppressor. So, the redesigned the recoil spring to site below the suppressor (ion the regular P-83 it encircles the barrel), and built a clever slide locking system into the trigger mechanism...
Ultimately, the project was cancelled and never went into production.Only a handful of prototypes were made, and we are grateful to Works 11 for giving me access to film this one to film for you!

The automated slide-lock was an interesting choice. It absolutely simplifies the operation of cycling in another round compared to the hush puppy, but it also eliminates the possibility that it could ever be wielded as a side arm (presumably for special forces or VIP security) since there is no way to utilize it in a semi-automatic nature. The other thing that intrigues me, is the discussion about mass production. In light of my previous point, who would've ever assumed there would be a "mass market" for what is effectively a firearm that would only be wielded by hit-men. This seems like the type of project that would have always targeted a small audience.

What puzzles me, is that "recoil spring". Since the slide is not supposed to back during the firing, i believe the reinvented device is never used in that context, remaining merely a "return spring" when operating the slide manually, unless there's something we don't see, like capability to bypass the slide locking device, somehow. I do own the "original" P-83 and really appreciate this sort of content. Thanks!

that is a HUGE silencer for no more cartridge than a 380. wow. you'd have to wear a rain coat and a shoulder rig just to bring it to the show, or carry it in a brief case I have a M21 Beretta .22lr that is 8" long, can and all, front sight on the front of the can, groups 2" at 25m, and when I run it wet with WD-40 and water, and the slide locked shut, it's inaudible at 100m on a quiet night on open, flat ground, 50m in a normal day setting with a bit of wind and hills and brush, or in town with typical car traffic. Nothing about a subsonic 380 hit to the chest is all that likely to keep a man from screaming, much less an armed man from firing his gun. Once that much noise is made, the silencer is probably irrelevant. I regard the ability to swiftly draw the gun from under a T shirt, and get a head-hit to mean at least as much as the (perhaps) 3x greater "power" of the 380, when I have to dress up like Santa Claus, just to get to the shooting site. While the 22 only has 60 ft lbs of striking -force , when it's applied to the head, or throat, it's well proven to be enough o a lick to let a skilled shooter get in more such licks. Several tricks are used to make the can so compact There is a 1.25" sleeve tube around the .875" OD baffled tube. The "sleeve area" between the two tubes is filled with copper screen wire, wrapped around the baffle-tube. the rear 1" of the baffle-tube is vented into this "sleeve-area". The bottom of the sleeve area, for 1" at its rear, is vented into an oval 'under-chamber". , which extends back to the trigger-guard and also down to the trigger guard, for most of the length of the can This under-chamber is tapered at both ends, both from the side view and the front, so that it wont snag on the draw or re-holstering movements When I got rid of the over-travel in the trigger, the DA option disappeared, too, cause I bent the trigger more in order to achieve the former. The barrel is pinned down to the frame, and the barrel-release lever is now the slide lock. A Taurus "pinkie finger' magazine is fitted. A 1/8" thick steel cap was Tig welded to the top rear of the slide. This additiional metal let me dovetail in the large, luminous rear sight and also let me add an extractor, which lead to a huge increase in the reliability of the pistol in normal cycling The M21's very lw slide opens far too soon, normally, and lets out a LOT of noisy powder-gases. Tapered Lexan grips are Acraglassed around the recoil spring tubes, making the gun much more concealable and the stock panels are much less likely to break The thumb-safety was enlarged/lengthened, like that of a match 1911. A dovetall base was silver brazed to the front of the sleeve tube and a luminous front sight was dovetailed into that base. The threads on the barrel and the can were case-hardened and the can is Loc-Tited onto the gun. I'd like to have interrupted threads and have the option of removing and replacing the can, but doing so would probably throw off the sites.and add about $1000 to what I'd have to charge for the assembly. The baffles are made of compressed copper screen wire, and a couple of neoprene washers are used. I dont normally have them in use as "wipes", cause they hurt accuracy, but it's not much of a deal to add such. Remove the internal snapring and washer that serve as the front endcap of the can. Fire a shot and the "bloop" noise ejects the end-most baffle.. You can then use a "buttonhook sort of tool to reach inside of the baffle's bullet- path and gently tug out the remaining baffels, This is if you have not fired a lot of rds thru the can. If you HAVE, you'll have to first spray in some WD-40 and wait a bit for the powder residues to soften The can will start getting noisy after about 30 shots., but not much louder and not quickly.. Soak it well with brake-cleaner aerosol, let it set for an hour, and blow it out with canned air and it's ready to go again. The baffles alternate in size from 3/4" long with a 1/2" ID hole, to 3/8" long and a 1/4" ID hole. This has the effect of letting the most gas get into the sleeve area and the underchamber., with the neoprene washers completely stopping the powder gases from just passing-thru the compressed screenwire "donut" baffles.. It's a uniquely entertaining little trail gun. I pair it with a P938 Sig, in case I need more power. The Sig has a spare barrel, chambered in 9x21mm, with a hollowbased, 45 gr, solid aluminum hp, which is slit nearly in half (lengthwise, from both ends) A LOT of Alliant Bullseye powder is used to achieve 2200 fps, and 500 ft lbs from this pocket 9mm, with no more recoil than a Makarov. It's AP on Level IIA Kevlar, which is all I had to test it with., At impact, the bullet breaks in half lengthwise and the two full length, sharp-cornered frags diverge and yaw as they penetrate. Because of the very high impact velocity, any vital organ tissue that is 'caught' between the segments as the penetrate is torn apart by the temporary gas cavity. On animal tests, it's proven to exceed the effect of a 4" barreled 357 with 125 gr jhp;s. Not bad for a 6" long, 16 oz gun. :-) 1/2 grain of black flash powder removes the horrendous amount of muzzle flash. For the noise, fire one handed if indoors or in a car. Cover one ear with the palm of your non firing hand. For the other ear, hunch up your shoulder and tilt your head into it. This helps a LOT at preserving your hearing and if practiced a bit, wont hurt your ability to hit the chest at 10 ft or less.nor slow down your draw and hit times. If a double of this combo to the chest wont stop him, a .44 mag jhp would not have done so, either. He's just in the 1-2% outlier category, that dont get stopped even by a 12 ga.

We best brace ourselves, there's gonna be a lot of nigh-identical prototypes that came between the P-64 and P-83.

Seems a bit of a strange thing to effectively make it a manual action ONLY weapon. Having to lock and unlock the hush puppy to cycle seems like a pain, but compared to not being able to fire in semi auto at all...

In the end you answered exactly that question I have came up in the beginning: why would army need such a weapon? Is there any history of real use of such things? I just see no situation it could be used...

The eternal conundrum of Forgotten Weapons. If Ian hadn't shown us this one, it would have become eternally forgotten to everyone but a few custodians scratching their heads once in a while. But now it's been reset to a well known prototype in the collective gun knowledge, and will remain so for a number of decades until it fades back into obscurity.

The Hush Puppy is a better design. Allowing to choose between one shot then manually pulling back the slide or hit the switch for semi auto shots.
