If you watch a Woodland Mills video or read the manual that came with the grinder it specifically states to start grinding from the right edge of the stump (when you are standing behind the stump and tractor look forward). You should only be grinding with the lower left quadrant of the wheel. That way the grinder isn't trying to walk across the top of the stump. It all about physics.

Thanks for the nice video... according to the WM operator manual, the grinder should attack the stump right to left. This will pull the grinder down into the stump. Grinding from the left or middle will cause excessive vibration and jumping.

I notice that when your grinder contacts the stump, it jerks to the side. You should take the side to side play out of your 3 point arms and it won’t jerk like that.

Interesting. When I worked for an underground construction company, we build a 18" wide 5' diameter grinder that went on an excavator instead of the bucket. We could grind stumps, asphalt pavement, and hard sandstone with it. Only four of the equipment operators were allowed to use it. It took a light hand on the controls.

Permatex anti-seize seems to be very underrated on You Tube video mechanic's channels. Why is that? Why would you not put something on bolts or studs that helps out the next time you have to do maintenance work on equipment?? Blows my mind! Also, regrinding the teeth couldn't one find a company locally that can regrind them for you???

I have the same stump grinder. Brandell, could you give me an idea of how often to grease the main bearing. Woodland Mills is not specific in their owner manual. Too much grease can be harmful for a close system. I have ground around dozen stumps. Some them 3 ft in diameter. I greased everything when assembled the unit and cautiously put a few shots of high temp grease in the main bearing. This all when the unit was new a few months ago.

Good inputt. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍
@BigOrangeTractors

The bearing is just a pillow bearing, so any excess grease will be thrown out while in use. You can even see some of the grease trail on the disc in a few of the scenes. I've used mine exactly the same as you, with between 1-2 dozen stumps and several of them being 36"-60" in diameter. I think I've greased it maybe twice. I would worry much more about under-greasing than over-greasing. However, the nice thing is they are standard bearings available almost anywhere!

Tinker Tractor Welder Mechanic that is very good to know. With all the grinding I have done with it I was concerned about it. I now know I can grease it periodically without fear of damaging it.
@BigOrangeTractors
@BigOrangeTractors 4 жыл бұрын
@@tifttyson absolutely. With all the grinding I've done, I've probably still only put about 6-8 hours on it. I'd say 4-8 operational hours would be good, or just a squeeze or two every time you go to use it (if it's an infrequent use item). I usually grease my equipment after I finish using it, so it's ready for the next time.
@tifttyson

Have you sharpened any of the teeth? I just bought one of these and have already ground about 50 stumps ranging from hard wood to very soft/rotten pine stumps. Have only seen rock in one of the grinds and tried to be careful around it. That said, the teeth are not what they were when it started out (I bought 12 spares when I got the grinder so I can compare to those too). Woodland Mills indicates that these can be removed and re-sharpened... any idea how to go about that?

I talked with woodland mills, and they said that you can sharpen them to some extent using a silicon carbide grinding wheel/disc. I would just say to make sure they are nice and true/flat when done grinding them.

I'm surprised how few teeth are on the grinder if they doubled the amount of teeth wouldn't it cut better
@HamiltonvilleFarm
@HamiltonvilleFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe🤷🏻‍♂️ my assumption is the woodland Mills engineering team felt this was an optimal amount. Distance between teeth and orientation of teeth probably produce the desired output of shavings. More teeth may clog up the blade. Again, I'm guessing at this point. Thanks for the comment. Makes one think. 👍
