Public Safety Net Hospitals... Hidden Subsidy They Provide to Other Area Hospitals.
Public Safety Net Hospitals are in large cities and are funded by local taxes to care care of local people... even if they are uninsured.
Examples of Public Safety Net Hospitals include Bellevue Hospital in New York City, Jackson Memorial in Miami, Grady Memorial in Atlanta and Ben Taub Hospital in Houston.
The new book "The People's Hospital" by Dr. Ricardo Nuila is an excellent overview of the wonderful care that Ben Taub Hospital provides for the people of Houston and the surrounding Harris County.
56% of Ben Taub's patients are uninsured and 1 in 5 of all Houston area hospital stays for the uninsured occur at Ben Taub.
Ben Taub has a $1.9B annual budget, of which approximately 46% comes from local taxes.
The $875M in taxes that local residents pay to fund Ben Taub and Harris Health subsidizes the local Not-for-Profit and For-Profit hospitals in that these do not need to take care of the uninsured Houstonians that Ben Taub does.
As an executive at Ben Taub says in the book, "If we [Ben Taub] go, they [the other hospitals in Houston] go."

Thank you Dr. Bricker for this presentation. I lost my mom in August of 2023. She was hospitalized in April 2023 for the first time in her life, same chief complaint in August, only this time it was too late. Like you said, they keep coming back to get stabilize and eventually die. My mom's condition was heart disease related, but it all aligns with the chronic diseases in this country and if you don't have health insurance (which she didnt) your SOL, with the exception of patient safety net hospitals like the one you shared. Continuity of care is necessary for people to continue living on. As far as I am concerned, my mom was deemed dead after her April hospitalization. I plan to share her story soon ❤

Dr. Bricker, once again, kudos for highlighting the commendable services offered by these public hospitals. In smaller cities, the unfortunate trend of hospital closures is creating a void in healthcare services.

I’ve worked at a few of these places. Phenomenal experiences. I sometimes like to say that it’s the closest thing the USA has to universal healthcare. Anyone who owns a $500k house in Dallas county probably contributes about $1k a year to Parkland. Thanks for sharing!
